Idiots on harbour walls in this storm

I've just seen this photo on BBC News of a wave twice the height of a harbour wall, with at least 10 people standing on the wall itself. Is a thrill or a good pic for Instagram really worth risking your life and those of the lifeboat service? Where do all these idiots come from?!

why mention the rescuers? of course they will go out because they are servicemen.

Those group there are just joe public, teenagers, no?

toomuchlaundry · 18/02/2022 15:27

A doctor doesn’t usually have to risk their life looking after a smoker

Lockheart · 18/02/2022 15:28

I tell you what, let's actually consider the batshit idea that the RNLI should be banned from rescuing people who put themselves in danger. Let's consider how that would work.

The phone goes. Someone, or a few people, are in the water. Time is of the essence. The sea is cold and conditions are rough. They cannot be reached from land. You have minutes.

Do you a) spend those precious minutes trying to determine how they got into the water and dick about trying to work out if they deserve help, or b) launch the boat.

If a), what do you do when they inevitably drown and it turns out it was just a tragic accident and you just left a "worthy" human being to drown?

You're also going to have to quantify how you determine who is worthy of rescuing or not. What if someone saw someone else in trouble was trying to help and got pulled in? What if a parent took their children down? Fuck the kids, let them drown, serves their stupid parents right? What if a safe distance had been kept and precautions taken but a freak wave swept someone away?

It's a bloody stupid idea and goes against everything the RNLI stands for.

LuckyAmy1986 · 18/02/2022 15:31

I totally agree, but often think the same about people that do certain extreme sports

Yep, and climbers!

justasoul · 18/02/2022 15:37

I recognise the location and although I wouldn’t say it is safe - specially not for the person sat on the wall -, it looks worse in the photo than it is. There is no actual sea behind them, just in front and to the side, where there’s a (closed for refurbishment) walk to the lighthouse at the end.

YouMuckyDuck · 18/02/2022 15:39

@Grantanow

They probably voted for Brexit too.
God give me strength.......there's clearly a direct link 🙄🙄🙄
minipie · 18/02/2022 15:41

This was exactly my thought on seeing those pictures OP.

Reckless idiots.

LibrariesGiveUsPower · 18/02/2022 15:52

@SartresSoul

Where do all these idiots come from?! Essex

😂😂😂

It’s Pothcawl not Essex.
LibrariesGiveUsPower · 18/02/2022 15:55

The idiots are standing in front of a massive car park. Stupid, but they aren’t out on the pier which is blocked off atm.

Happens every high wind. Idiots the lot of them, but the waves break very dramatically here, so they are most likely photographers hoping for a front page picture.

Fernie6491 · 18/02/2022 15:59

I also remember that guy that (I think) broke his leg whilst pot-holing. He was down there for about 48 hours or more and about 200 people coming from all over the country to rescue him.

I'd love to have let him stay there a couple more days. Next time we saw him on the News saying yes, he'd go back down there again, he wasn't deterred. Never mind all those people endangering their own lives. Angry

WeeWeeMe · 18/02/2022 16:06

@Grantanow
"They probably voted for Brexit too."

I bet they're cyclists as well!

justasoul · 18/02/2022 16:08

There’s a camera live-streaming from the top of that building behind them if anyone fancies a watch Smile

Popopopo · 18/02/2022 16:09

Essex??? Excuse me?? Hmm

Keepithidden · 18/02/2022 16:14

"I bet they're cyclists as well!"

Even worse, mountain bikers, recklessly throwing themselves down untarmaced hills with gay abandon!

Scim the lot of them!

😉

Keepithidden · 18/02/2022 16:15

Scum even!

sueelleker · 18/02/2022 16:19

I saw an idiot on the lunchtime news letting his dog run into the sea!
Evening news-"a man died trying to save his dog"?

Nanny0gg · 18/02/2022 16:21

@FourChimneys

I know the lifeboat crews have a brilliant ethos but they should be forced not to attempt to rescue people like that. Idiots can choose to risk death but not expect any help.
^^This
Nanny0gg · 18/02/2022 16:24

@mummykel16

What?

WhatICallMyUsername · 18/02/2022 16:24

There was a "hilarious" (SkyNews I think) broadcast earlier of the reporter being hit by a wave whilst reporting on the dangers of standing next to sea walls. Whilst stood next to a sea wall Hmm

GucciBear · 18/02/2022 16:33

I read that people were surfing at Minehead today!!!

YouDoIDo · 18/02/2022 16:45

How many idiots can you fit on a pier!

itsgettingweird · 18/02/2022 16:46

what do you do when they inevitably drown and it turns out it was just a tragic accident and you just left a "worthy" human being to drown?

I agree with most of what you've said as my dad has been a coastguard and lifeguard. I've spent many a childhood night hoping he's safe rescuing people.

However let's not pretend people being swept off a sea wall in a horrendous storm with a red warning is an accident. They went there deliberately knowing the risks.

And they do so expecting to be rescued if the risks happen to them.

It's possible to separate the 2 things.

HestersSamplerofCarrots · 18/02/2022 16:50

Darwin awards

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 18/02/2022 16:53

I’m on a dog breed specific fb group and someone posted a pic of them and their two dogs walking on the seafront against a backdrop of huge waves. He got his arse handed to him repeatedly.

upaladderagain · 18/02/2022 16:54

They look like contenders for the Darwin Awards.
