Idiots on harbour walls in this storm

I've just seen this photo on BBC News of a wave twice the height of a harbour wall, with at least 10 people standing on the wall itself. Is a thrill or a good pic for Instagram really worth risking your life and those of the lifeboat service? Where do all these idiots come from?!

@Lockheart so you think it is appropriate they should have to risk their lives to save these idiots?

inmyslippers · 18/02/2022 13:46

That picture makes me nauseous

Lockheart · 18/02/2022 13:46

If they choose to then they choose to. You're the one advocating for them to be forced to stay in.

Lockheart · 18/02/2022 13:46
@Lockheart so do they have the right to say "nope, too dangerous, not turning out" then?
Of course they do. Lifeboats can't always launch.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 18/02/2022 13:49

@Lockheart, you miss the point. They should not be put in that position in the first place.

They shouldn't, but a) they choose to go out because they are incredibly brave and believe it is the right thing to do because b) the punishment for being a fucking idiot is not drowning.

Bigassbeebuzzbuzz · 18/02/2022 14:23

Ide be fuming if one of my loved ones had to risk their lives saving one of those morons. Maybe we need more warnings on beach signs e.g if we have a red alert for wind and you go past this point you will be fined etc.
I dont suppose it helps that every new crew is right on the edge so people think if they can I can.

PolkaSpace · 18/02/2022 14:24

They should make it a crime

yes and no, I say there should be no lifeboat services today because of the danger and people should be informed as such, if they want to fuck about for a death thrill thats on them and is there business.
JolkienRolkienRolkienTolkien · 18/02/2022 14:32

And the BBC have reporters out in hard hats or driving along coastal roads for live updates. Ridiculous.

Daftasabroom · 18/02/2022 14:33

Look closely, they are a long way from where the waves are breaking.

IsItTooHotInHere · 18/02/2022 14:52

What stupid fuckers. As some have already said, people like that expect to be rescued when they're in trouble, thus putting the rescuers in danger too.

Emanchego · 18/02/2022 14:55

I was sat on my bike on the pavement waiting at a pedestrian crossing, had both feet on the floor and got forced to the floor by the wind yesterday. I was fighting to stay upright and still went down. Never been blown down like that before so hard hats make perfect sense. I'm glad I had my helmet on. And before anyone starts, I was on the pavement as I felt very unsafe on the road due to the wind, and I've cycled many times in 40+mph gales.

The natural consequence of being a fucking idiot around water is quite often drowning actually. You don't have the right to be saved from your own stupidity.

Absolutely

Could not agree more!
Laquila · 18/02/2022 15:00

It looks like a very stupid thing to do but I think @lockheart has it - the penalty for being a dick is not drowning.

Putting caveats like that on who can be rescued/assisted in emergency situations is a bit of a slippery slope that brings up all sorts of ethical considerations around euthanasia and suicide, societal responsibility, the value of human life etc. I've heard the same thing said about anti-vaxxers (e.g. refuse them treatment on the NHS) but who gets to decide what's stupid?

Yes, but since we live in a civilised society we have an unfortunate tendency to try and save people. Rubbish, isn't it?

Perhaps we could apply that to people who smoke or let themselves get fat. Since the natural consequence is a heart attack, after all.

Porcupineintherough · 18/02/2022 15:19

It's not quite the same though is it? Seeing as we are talking about how much danger is reasonable to put any would be rescuer in.

Soubriquet · 18/02/2022 15:21

People are idiots. I hate seeing it when they bring their children along.

Water is a dangerous thing to mess around with

The rescuers are volunteers and are under no obligation to go out.

Probably Meghan Markle’s fault somehow too
Hobbesmanc · 18/02/2022 15:25

I got knocked over by a wave on the pier at Whitby earlier this year- it was stormy but no warnings. Wave came out of nowhere. Was left soaked and bruised all over. Never under estimate the sea

RishiRich · 18/02/2022 15:25

The waves are breaking behind them, as well as the massive one infront. They don't have a safe way off that wall.
