To think bigger is not better?

HelloBunny · 17/02/2022 15:49

I hate our new television. It’s huge. It’s ugly. The picture is dull & flat. I didn’t want it... Preferred our old telly!
Luckily, I rarely watch TV. But, now I never do! I like to put it on for my son to watch movies, etc...
DH watches his programmes, himself, at night. He won’t even consider looking at the settings...
AIBU to think - bigger is not better?

When we bought our current TV 11 years ago it was considered massive. Now its considered small...
Its perfect size for our house. I don't understand the obsession with TV getting bigger and bigger.

JauntyJinty · 17/02/2022 15:59

We down sized our TV a few years back and mounted in the alcove beside the chminey rather than on the chimney

I much prefer it, it used to totally dominate the room as soon as you walked in, now it's just kind of there in the corner

IsDaveThere · 17/02/2022 16:02

For a TV, depends what size it is really. My current one is 42in and at the time of purchase, was considered quite a big one. Now I think 43in is one of the smallest you can get! My living room is tiny and anything bigger than the one I have now would look ridiculous.

MorningStarling · 17/02/2022 16:02

He won’t even consider looking at the settings...

Can't you? If you don't have the manual you'll be able to download it, the manufacturer's website is a good starting point. I mean, you can't change the size, but perhaps the image quality can be improved.

AryaStarkWolf · 17/02/2022 16:02

What do you mean "he won't even consider looking at the settings?"

Babadook76 · 17/02/2022 16:03

It’s depends on how big you mean. My mil has an 8 foot protector screen in her living room. Having to turn your head to watch what’s going on on the telly is a pita

GroggyLegs · 17/02/2022 16:03

How huge is it?

Guy at work was boasting about his 80" telly (or something like that). How do you even watch it comfortably in a typical UK living room??

Getoff · 17/02/2022 16:06

The picture on a new TV needs to be changed from the default to movie mode, if you want the best quality. I wouldn't go beyond that with fiddling with the settings, you will likely do more harm than good.

(The reason the adjustment needs to be made is that the default setting is optimised for catching the eye when the TV is on display in a shop.)

CounsellorTroi · 17/02/2022 16:06

We’ve got a 50in in our 15 by 15 ft living room. We did wonder if it was too big to begin with but we are used to it now.

Manc2 · 17/02/2022 16:07

I agree. Our tv is 32 inches and i think that is big enough. I hate seeing houses with TVs so big it fills the room

Pazuzu · 17/02/2022 16:08

Dammit. This thread didn't go as I hoped.

I wasn't expecting TV chat either
Davros · 17/02/2022 16:14

I love a big TV but it must be appropriate for the room. I had to over rule DH on a massive one he installed in the "snug" when we moved. Needless to say it didn't feel so snug until we got something more suitable.

gunnersgold · 17/02/2022 16:18

Bigger tv that is a lower quality screen than old one will be worse of course .
My dh loves a big tv but always insists on a great quality screen . I've noticed a lot of people have them on factory settings which is for the shop so the picture is awful and too bright! Start fiddling with the settings. !

HelloBunny · 17/02/2022 16:23

Thanks for the tip, Getoff! I’ll try that, just didn’t know where to start...
What l mean by him not doing it, is that he reckons there’s nothing “wrong” with the damn thing.
But I remember reading here, about adjusting for HD etc... So that the picture improves. No point in me dicking about with it, making it worse.
DH is more techie than me, as in he bought all of the sound systems, amps, speakers, TV etc... But, in actuality probably doesn’t know any more than I do about the settings!

Google answers all! :p
HelloBunny · 17/02/2022 16:29

Yeah, I’ll check Google.

Once, we had a sound bar where the audio didn’t match up with their mouths... And I fixed that problem!

LottyD32 · 17/02/2022 16:29

I've got a 65" and it's perfect for the size of the room. Its 4k HD or something so the picture is 👌🏽

I think it just depends on the size of your room.

TheHaka · 17/02/2022 16:41

So you are now a true MNetter, seeing as no one on MN claims to watch TV. 🙏looks like we caught ‘em out.

AryaStarkWolf · 17/02/2022 16:43

You're well able, take control of that TV woman!
VelvetChairGirl · 17/02/2022 17:00

I dont understand people who buy massive TVs it doesnt improve the picture, it takes up too much room and any TV you have to move your head to see the full picture isnt one I would want.

waste of money and electricity just buy a better smaller one instead.

HelloBunny · 17/02/2022 17:05

Yup, VelvetChairGirl. I’m with ya!
DH got a “good deal” on this one...

Our main tv is 33". It is absolutely big enough.

Me too! Ours is a 32inch. Plenty big enough.
teaandtoastwithmarmite · 17/02/2022 17:25

Ours is 40" or 42" I can't remember. We bought it in 2010 and I don't see the need to get another as it's perfectly fine and fits nicely in the room. It's a Sony Bravia
