Please stop Febreezing everything

Every time I buy something from eBay it stinks. The item itself stinks. The packaging stinks.
If it stank of dog hair or mould or something natural then I could clean it, but no, everything stinks of Febreeze or Zoflora or one of those awful odour remover sprays.
It makes me feel sick, and it’s impossible to get rid of. If I can’t put it in the washing machine I have to put the offending item in the garage for months and hope that the smell will eventually dissipate. I bought some secondhand boots today and now the whole house smells of Febreeze, despite me immediately taking all the packaging out to the bin and putting the boots in the garage.
Please stop covering everything with revolting chemicals. It’s so unnecessary.

Ew stop buying stuff on eBay if that’s the standard of it.

StoneofDestiny · 16/02/2022 20:16

Never used the stuff - judging by the TV adverts it's for people whose homes stink of animals or sweaty men. Why don't they just wash their stuff instead of spraying them - pretty unhygienic.

RedCandyApple · 16/02/2022 20:16

Stop buying from there then, I don’t buy clothes or shoes second hand

Penvelopey · 16/02/2022 20:18

Stopped buying 2nd hand because of this.

VanillaSpiceCandle · 16/02/2022 20:33

Sticking things in a garage is never going to get the smell out. Only fresh air and sunshine will do that.

If people hadn’t sprayed second hand shoes, then the majority of people would complain they smelled of feed. Stuff smelling of things not to your liking comes with buying second hand.

Pyri · 16/02/2022 20:36

Grin stop buying stuff on eBay then

It doesn’t need to go in the garage for months. You could hang it outside to air

Helenahandkart · 16/02/2022 20:39

I only buy second hand and always have done. I like old stuff. Smells never used to be a problem. A musty ‘vintage’ smell can be dealt with fairly easily using charcoal and natural cleaners.
The chemical smell is a recent development, and serves no purpose. It doesn’t hide the ‘vintage’ smell. It just adds a disgusting layer on top of it.
I just don’t understand why people spray it all over everything.

Hanging boots outside to air in torrential rain in February isn’t going to help.

RedCandyApple · 16/02/2022 20:41

Because they are worried about the smell? They obviously thought they smelt bad

Helenahandkart · 16/02/2022 20:42

I would rather my eBay purchases smelt of feet than Febreeze.
You can get rid of the smell of feet.
Feet+Febreeze is filthy and impossible to eradicate.

Hairyfriend · 16/02/2022 20:42

If you win something on ebay, just email the selling and ask them NOT to use febreeze on the product.

Helenahandkart · 16/02/2022 20:42

@RedCandyApple

Because they are worried about the smell? They obviously thought they smelt bad
They still smell bad. They smell worse.

How do you know its Fabreeze? I always assume clothes smell of other people's washing powder and softener. I'm not sure how you would know the difference unless you were an avid use rof Fabreeze yourself.

Scianel · 16/02/2022 20:45

I hate hate hate this trend for making things stink. See also air freshener in hotel rooms. Thanks for the instant headache Hmm

Stroopwaffle5000 · 16/02/2022 20:46

You're being a bit dramatic, the smell of Febreze does not last forever!

Helenahandkart · 16/02/2022 20:48

I know the smell of Febreeze from visiting houses where it gets used. Sometimes things smell of washing powder, which is more understandable, but Febreeze is vile and unnecessary.
It’s just in the last couple of years that this has been happening. Prior to that things just smelt of washing powder or attic - either of which is fine.

Helenahandkart · 16/02/2022 20:49

I guess the drama level depends on how sensitive people are to unpleasant unwanted unnecessary smells. Particularly toxic chemical smells that cause headaches.

WetLookKnitwear · 16/02/2022 21:03

So that’s what that smell is!

Cinnabomb · 16/02/2022 21:07

I agree. I can’t believe people actually use such scented wash powders and lenor 🤢 they are so vile

ilovemybeachhut · 16/02/2022 21:08

I like to buy second hand clothles for the environmental aspect but I've never found the 'febreze problem' in evidence. Everything is laundered anyway before i wear it. Months of smell? That sounds a bit extreme tbh.

SpaghettiArmsMurderer · 16/02/2022 21:11

Yanbu, I recently bought some jeans from eBay and had to wash them twice before I could wear them as they had such a strong artificial fragrance (fabric softener?) which is ridiculous!

Luredbyapomegranate · 16/02/2022 21:13

Oh I agree..

You can just hang em up in front of an open window though, the chemical stink does blow away..

And to the PPs saying, oh I never buy second hand YOU BLOODY WELL SHOULD

SmellyOldOwls · 16/02/2022 21:13

When I've bought second hand clothes they always smell really strongly of fabric conditioner. Sometimes I can feel it on the clothes too. It always reminds me of Karen in Will and Grace 'Rosario, enough-o with the April Fresh-o'

StellaRockaFella · 16/02/2022 21:15

Last item I bought from eBay reeked of Febreeze, as did the item I bought from Vinted. Both have been washed several times and aired outside, yet still both items stink. I daren't hang them in my wardrobe in case they my clothes pick up the scent. Instead, they've been relegated to a ziplock freezer bag. I bought I'll wear either item.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 16/02/2022 21:16

Ooo I love febreeze and super smelly washing powers and softeners

I don't sell on eBay though so it's not me
