Subtitles are shit in general for deaf people whose grammar follows BSL.

I live in Denmark and usually end up shouting at the subtitles, particularly when its inspector morse and they dont know english well enough to know that half two in english means half PAST two, not half TO two as it would be in danish. Ruins the timeline and renders the story impossible nonsense. Grrrr.

I grew up in a non English speaking country but we had a lot of UK and US TV programs, all subtitled except programs for children and some documentaries, which were dubbed. It was great as we grew up hearing different languages.

The standard of translations has dropped considerably in the last 20-30 years. I remember watching Only Fools and Horses back then and the translation was fabulous, it managed to connect the cockney humour with our local equivalent without losing the meaning of it. Wonderful understanding of both languages. Nowadays you get more nonsensical literal translations and obvious misinterpretations.

I'm fluent in English but I rely on subtitles when watching TV - it's way more tiring to watch without them. I agree the streaming services are really frustrating in that way.

Sadly not, that only applies to the web versions.

It is an active translation for foreign languages rather than simply transcription. They alter things to fit the mood of the scenario on the edit from https://www.movavi.com/. Additionally, they attempt to make the subtitles in the shot of the character speaking flow smoothly. Condensing may be necessary on occasion. Additionally, they need to translate slang into something that makes sense to outsiders. Being a perfect translator is a complex and nearly impossible undertaking. The main focus of my piece was on English subtitles for English-language movies, even though it might have gotten lost in translation.
