How can you tell is someone is faking wealth?

When the hell is someone genuinely wealthy rather than just trying to be all flash but when in truth there's no real money behind the facade?

I find that people who are genuinely wealthy don’t flaunt the fact. Those that portray the rich lifestyle all over social media are the ones who seem to rent cars and air b&b’s for photo oops

fallfallfall · 16/02/2022 16:54

time. little things won't add up.
you could ask if the opportunity presents itself.

Wandda · 16/02/2022 16:58

Have you watched Inventing Anna on Netflix? Lots of examples on there

Iknowitisheresomewhere · 16/02/2022 17:00

Well - if I suppose ask yourself why someone may want to fake being wealthy. I suppose answers to that are - to try and scam someone, or self esteem issues.

In what circumstance would it matter if there was no money behind the facade?

If you show that you are uninterested in wealth then that should put off any scammers.

Meeting wider family and friends should help a lot in working out the type of person they are.

Heytheredemons · 16/02/2022 17:03

People who have money have nothing to prove, so although they may wear expensive clothing, etc, they don't feel the need to draw attention to it, brag about what they have and how much it cost.
Those money fakers will go on and on about how much they paid for things and how lucky they are to have soooo much money.
You get the idea.

MintyFreshBreath · 16/02/2022 17:05

Is this about the Tinder Swindler?

Agrudge · 16/02/2022 17:08

Rich people dont tend to wear designer clothes. They wear bespoke clothing. People who brag about how much things cost are trying to look wealthy

Violetmo0n · 16/02/2022 17:09

As others.
The wealthy people I know don't exactly look the pretend ones do.
Nothing is boasted on socials or when our etc.

JellybabyGina87 · 16/02/2022 17:11

People that go on about what they have. A friend of mine went on about her house and car and her amazing job where she was very high up. Turns out the house was rented, she got sacked and lost the car because it was a company car and had to go out and buy an old banger. I'm not impressed by wealth and I'm not wealthy myself. I don't own a house or car so maybe it was to make me feel bad.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 16/02/2022 17:14

Genuinely wealthy people are often more modest about it.

In my baby group years ago, there was one couple who were absolutely loaded. Had a massive house in a lovely area, and bought another without selling the original one etc etc.

Another couple thought they were in that league and went on about money all the time, it was embarrassing, and they tried to get the wealthy couple to join in ...... the wealthy mum used to close the conversation down straight away with "We've been very lucky".

LolaSmiles · 16/02/2022 17:16

People with a lot of money don't tend to draw attention to it and don't seem drawn to wanting to appear wealthy.

I also think that's the case between people who are comfortable vs people who want to seem like theh have money.

There's two areas near me. Neither are super affluent. One has more expensive but less flashy, homes, the other has cheaper homes but are superficially flashy in places. The people I know from area 1 tend to have middle of the road cars, nice enough stuff and you'd probably not bat an eye lid at them in the street. The people i know in area 2 seem to spend a LOT on nice handbags, beauty treatments, an audi/BMW on PCP. People in area 1 probably have less disposable income as their houses are more expensive, and people area 2 have cheaper houses and value a higher disposable income.
Both groups of people are clearly comfortable financially but there's very different attitudes to money and possessions.

Whatwouldyoudo24 · 16/02/2022 17:18

I have a friend who constantly feels the need to tell everyone how much money his has.
No one asks. No one cares.. but he tells us constantly ‘oh I have £1600 left over this month after absolutely everything has gone out and I booked a holiday’
No holiday ever transpires, none of the fancy things he says he’s buying.. none of the amazing job opportunities that will pay £70000 for part time hours.
Honestly it’s so glaringly obvious to everyone around him, I have no idea why he continues to lie, I’ve always guessed it’s pride!
My actual wealthy friend never, ever, mentions money. He goes on last minute trips abroad to work in little cafes in Italy while people watching and things but doesn’t tell anyone, if one of us finds out it’s because we’ve invited him out and he says ‘Oh I’ve popped to Italy for the weekend but how about Tuesday?’ He knows he has money and doesn’t fee the need to convince people!

DogsAndGin · 16/02/2022 17:18

Just out of interest, why are you wondering this?

bedheadedzombie · 16/02/2022 17:18

Poor people tend to buy the clothes that has the brand on them really big. Wealthy people buy the more understated (but really well cut) looking pieces. So if someone almost looks like a book you need to read, they have an issue with looking poor. Rich people don't care if they look poor, everyone who knows them knows that they have money. They don't need to prove it.

myBumJuiceSmellsLikeRoses · 16/02/2022 17:18

They talk about it.

Eggshausted · 16/02/2022 17:19

This. ^

Mumsnet is a great example of this. The bragging about wealth (from some on here,) knows no bounds. I don't believe 95% of it, because, as you say, people who ARE actually solvent/wealthy etc, don't parp on about it, and brag about their 'wealth...' There is an inordinate amount of 'wealthy/rich' women on mumsnet. Wink

This reminds me of an interesting thread in 'Christmas' last year about what it would be like to be super wealthy and able to give your children absolutely anything you wanted to at Christmas.

The general consensus was that wealth wouldn't lead to lots of presents, wealthy people were very aware of not wanting their children to grow up getting everything that they wanted. So whilst there might be theatre trips, skating, possibly ski trips etc around Christmas which all cost money, there wouldn't be an abundance of presents.

Same goes for any other occasion. So - properly wealthy, if they enjoy the theatre, may go to the theatre twice a week and possibly get a taxi home afterwards, which obviously adds up to quite a lot but doesn't feel overly extravagant. Someone 'faking wealth' may get a box, take a limo, go out to a very posh restaurant etc, if what they want to do is 'wow' someone about wealth they don't have.

The properly wealthy generally know how to take care of money, and don't want to be liked 'for their money' so don't flash it!

AnEpisodeOfEastenders · 16/02/2022 17:21

The stuff they have is genuine rather than fake / knock off!

tiktokontheclock · 16/02/2022 17:23

People who are genuinely wealthy don't talk about money or their lifestyle or even wear overtly branded clothing.

LolaSmiles · 16/02/2022 17:27

Money shouts, wealth whispers….
I like this. Smile

So if someone almost looks like a book you need to read, they have an issue with looking poor. Rich people don't care if they look poor, everyone who knows them knows that they have money. They don't need to prove it.
That mirrors my experience in schools. I'd taught a class for several years before I found out that one child was from a seriously wealthy family. In another school I've had parents shout at me down the phone because we didn't have food vouchers available on the day they wanted, who also told me they wouldn't allow their child to wear uniform at school because their child isn't going to look scruffy when they're used to labels. It blew my mind that someone would be struggling to feed children and prioritise designer clothes for their child.

ThreeRingCircus · 16/02/2022 17:31

Money shouts, wealth whispers….

This is perfectly put. The people I know that are genuinely well off don't drive really flash cars/flaunt their money etc. DH and I aren't really well off but are reasonably comfortable and always used to wonder how people afforded to be driving their new Audi 4x4s when we're driving around in a 10 year old Ford Focus, or going on holiday to Barbados when we were going to France... until we realised exactly how popular PCP/ sticking stuff on credit is.

StorminaBcup · 16/02/2022 17:33

They won’t ask for money….
I’ve been watching Inventing Anna, it’s crazy how not one person questioned it until they’d already been sucked in.

OMGItsEarly · 16/02/2022 17:33

I knew someone seriously wealthy. It’s true they had nice quality clothes but, the thing that stood out, was their quiet confidence. The self assured way they held themselves and they never talked about money or what they owned.

Someone who considered himself wealthy because he had a million pound house, posh car, designer clothes and talked non stop about how much his house was, what car he drove, what he owned wasn’t actually wealthy because he was mortgaged to the hilt, car was being paid monthly rather than owned outright, and his cc were always maxed out. He wasn’t popular down the local.
