To wonder what would drive someone to steal milk?

I've just cancelled my milkround after getting my milk stolen yet again. I've requested that the milkman puts it behind some bushes as I live on a main road, but he's continued to put it on the doorstep.

So, after it's gone missing yet again, I'm just wondering why someone would steal my three bottles of milk? I'm pretty pissed off at this point.

@forlornlorna

Op when I was a kid I used to steal milk off of steps. We were starving. Our parents were addicts. I'd rotate who I stole off (just a pint) so I hopefully didn't get caught. Then suddenly milk started to appear on our doorstep most days along with a loaf. Milkman had rumbled me and was a kind man
This is so sad and sweet at the same time. I remember reading something similar in a book (can't remember which one now, but it was an autobiography) where she watered down the milk to feed her baby brother and a policeman saw her and the policeman arranged for a pint of milk to be delivered each day for the baby.

Sorry your childhood was like this OP. Flowers

That milk was already stolen from the mother and baby cows it was intended for in the first place 😓

showmethegin · 16/02/2022 11:11

We have a milk thief in our area. Our street WhatsApp will post multiple ring videos of the same guy stealing their bottles on the same night. How many does he need.

While sadly extreme poverty may lead people to this, unless that guy is extremely poor and also has a giant cat I think he's just a dishonest opportunistic thief.

Jvg33 · 16/02/2022 11:13

Probably a CF

TigerLilyTail · 16/02/2022 11:17

I also suspect it's a case of "because it's there".

Thanks for your unnecessary input.

I've had fixed nick the milk, but they e knocked it over and drunk it - they haven't taken the bottle!

They did take the bag with the bread in though.

Definitely try a camera - cheeky buggers are doing it probably because they can.

AnneElliott · 16/02/2022 11:25

Foxes! Not fixed!

JoBrodie · 16/02/2022 11:37

I have a lidded metal bread bin outside my house for the milk to go in. This was actually to stop foxes ruining it, but might discourage the thief if they have to open a lid (noisy) to collect the milk.

Of course it's possible that they'll just pick up the entire container!

In attached pic you can see how bold the fox was (tip of my foot at the bottom of the photo) but the milk is now safe, until evolution produces opposable thumbs that is ;)

It's yonks ago, but my in laws paperboy used to steal their milk.

Thegoodandbadlife · 16/02/2022 11:47

Probably the same people who would “borrow” others milk at Uni.

TheMooch · 16/02/2022 11:48

We had milk wars on our street. Turns out a competitive company were stealing it then weeks later targeting the same area to see if people wanted them to deliver milk.

Arabellla · 16/02/2022 11:49

@Fieldsville

Can you afford to keep it going?

Maybe someone has a lot of cats near you.

What? So OP is meant to buy milk so it can be stolen?
TheYearOfSmallThings · 16/02/2022 11:50

They steal it because they use milk and there is free milk on your doorstep.

It's not free milk. It's stealing.
GalactatingGoddess · 16/02/2022 12:26

Opportunity. General thief.

Poverty. A parent who is tight up that week and desperate for milk for kids cereal?

Neglect. Children who aren't getting fed at home and are hungry on the way to school, or malnourished. Sad, but not uncommon.

Set a camera up and see. If it's a kid maybe you'll know them it'll shed a bit of light on their home life and support can be put in for them?

GracieLouFreeebush · 16/02/2022 12:27

Desperation! I used to steal it on my way to school because I was self conscious about how loud my belly rumbled in lessons

Grandville · 16/02/2022 12:35

Some people are desperate and some are cheeky, robbing cunts. We had a milk thief at work and he was one of the most highly paid on the floor!

When I was teaching, PE teachers were notorious for pinching pens as they cba to carry them around with them in their stupid shorts that they wore year round. Angry

OberthursGrizzledSkipper · 16/02/2022 12:36

We had ours nicked regularly about 30 years ago, and as you say it wasn't just one bottle but all 3. Police took it seriously as it wasn't just us. Turned out it was builders on their way to work.

Haven't had milk delivered since.

Fieldsville · 16/02/2022 12:59

@Arabellla said 'What? So OP is meant to buy milk so it can be stolen?'

Not meant to, no. Just, if if is being taken by someone experiencing poverty and if she could afford to, it would be a worthwhile thing to continue paying for it to be delivered.

NamiSwan · 16/02/2022 13:02

We had our fruit and veg box stolen a while back. Opportunity theft most likely. We got a doorbell camera and yep, it hasn't happened since!

That's ridiculous, Field.

Plot twist: Fill up the bottle with human breast milk and let them steal it. (I had so much frozen milk that DD refused to drink. I'd happily have done this).
BurgerAttack · 16/02/2022 13:09

Ah come now, I'm sure that Fieldsville has a bulk order of milk delivered every day for all the grateful whey cheeked urchins on her street, gorbilmey.
