Is there a hair curler which actually holds hair in curls???

I have fine hair.

Over the years I’ve tried all sorts of curling tongs/irons and nothing holds curls for more than an hour.

Can the wisdom of mumsnet help with my first world problem and recommend curlers for fine hair… maybe I need product too??

Hairdressers suggested GHD oracle but I don’t want to waste money is they don’t hold a curl!

Can your hairdresser get your hair to hold a curl? I think that's the important thing - I have thick chunky hair that holds a curl for 2 days (or a kink, or straightened), whereas my cousins have poker-straight fine hair that they've never managed to find a way to keep a curl.

For them it's been more about finding a great hairdresser who can cut their hair to give it texture and shape, rather than pointlessly frying it every day to get curls that will drop well before lunch.

I lightly dampen my hair with setting spray and put foam curlers in overnight. I have waist length fine hair and the curls stay in all day. Doesn't ruin my hair either.

I have super fine and straight hair but I can get it to hold a curl for a day using the ‘heartless curl’ methods - there’s loads to try. I slightly dampen my hair with very diluted Lottabody lotion first.

Sorry to say this, its your hair. Some hair holds a curl and some hair doesn't. The finer and thinner the hair, the less likely it is to hold it.

The tighter the curl is, the longer it takes to drop, so if you do want to to invest, look for something that makes a small tight curl.

luxxlisbon · 15/02/2022 07:02

It isn’t anything to do with the curler imo and more to do with your hair. Some hair just doesn’t hold a curl well. A curl really sticks in my hair so I find cheap curlers work just as well as expensive ones.

Try rolling the curl up on itself in your palm until it cools and then let go, then use a soft hairspray for a little extra hold. This will help but it still might not last forever on you, worth a try before a new curler though.

I have fine hair too and have every curling device known to man gathering dust under my bed !
Even when my hairdresser curls my hair, it drops out within half an hour.
I've finally accepted it's just not going to happen and embraced the straight !

No just give it up, I have

Queenoftheashes · 15/02/2022 08:23

My hair curls easily so I agree it’s hair. That said, the most intense curls I ever had were from pipe cleaners. Use them like bendy rollers and sleep in them. If that doesn’t work nothing will. And they cheap. A thousand times more effective than heat.

SmolCat · 15/02/2022 08:25

7 day straights worked for me! Not the shampoo but the heat defence cream. link

Notwithittoday · 15/02/2022 08:30

What length is your hair? If it’s mid length or long the glamoriser automatic curler is full proof and mark hill do a 12 hour curl spray that I find better than the ghd curl spray and it’s a big bottle

FirewomanSam · 15/02/2022 08:34

My hair is fine and doesn’t hold a curl very well but I have had some success with the Oracle. Takes a while to get the hang of the technique but now I can get a nice wave in my hair in around 10 mins which I love.

I do need product though. I use a heat protecting styling spray before and a spritz of hairspray afterwards. The curl still drops throughout the course of the day, nothing will change that, but at the end of the day my hair is still noticeably curled rather than straight.

nowtygaffer · 15/02/2022 08:34

My hair is similar to yours I think.

I bought one o those things that kind of suck your hair in. It's brilliant. Still looks nice the next day. I only use a bit of hairspray when it's done. The one I got was one of the cheaper versions because I didn't really think it would work. It's called a Silk Wave.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 15/02/2022 08:37

I've got a 'unicorn' wand so makes tight curls and I use a curl holder setting spray thing.
Once hair is all curled, leave it to completely cool, don't even touch it. Then use a wide tooth comb to break the curls up and it'll start to drop.

My hair is very fine too and will only hold a curl for a day with this method. Never survived overnight

Lellochip · 15/02/2022 08:37

My hairdresser recommended ditching conditioner completely, says it makes hair to soft and heavy to hold a style. Just shampoo, and then use whatever product (I've got some sort of thickening foam) and a bit of hair oil

Lockdownmummy · 15/02/2022 08:42

My hair doesn't hold a curl well so I curl it tighter than I want knowing it will drop over the day.

I also use the GHD curl hold spray

Christmas1988 · 15/02/2022 08:57

If you have really straight hair nothing will work, I’ve paid for umpteen curly blow drys and no hairdresser can work their magic. Save your money and enjoy straight hair.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 15/02/2022 09:13

I'd invest in different products to really 'set' your hair. It will probably look good but feel a bit gross

Pedalpushers · 15/02/2022 09:22

I've got straight fine hair and it curls and holds fine using a regular straightener with some firm hold mousse through it beforehand, making sure to use no products with added protein. I also colour my hair and I think a bit of damage helps, hair that's too strong and healthy tends to drop I think.

ElvisPresleysSideburns · 15/02/2022 09:24

I have long, fine hair. Just ordered this www.boots.com/revamp-progloss-hollywood-automatic-rotating-hair-curler-10283609 and praying it will work!

Roselilly36 · 15/02/2022 09:27

Same problem here, my hair is too think & heavy. Even when my hairdresser curls it, by the next morning curls are gone.

Jurassicparkinajug · 15/02/2022 09:31

I'm the same as you OP. Wasted only on every product. I have fine hair too. Professionals can get it to curl though but not on freshly washed hair. Wash it the night before if you want it to curl
