Is there a hair curler which actually holds hair in curls???

user47000000000 · 15/02/2022 06:45

I have fine hair.

Over the years I’ve tried all sorts of curling tongs/irons and nothing holds curls for more than an hour.

Can the wisdom of mumsnet help with my first world problem and recommend curlers for fine hair… maybe I need product too??

Hairdressers suggested GHD oracle but I don’t want to waste money is they don’t hold a curl!

I have a Wylera and its utterly brilliant for making curls and them staying put

thebellagio · 15/02/2022 09:33

Try this - wylerahair.co.uk/

I have very thick, heavy hair. The best for curling it are Babyliss Curl Secret or bendy rollers overnight.

BobbinHood · 15/02/2022 09:35

My very-straight hair definitely needs product to hold a curl, and either a heatless overnight method to create the curls (so my hair has dried into that shape) or a lot of heat - so a tong or straighteners rather than a blow dry or heated rollers which just aren’t hot enough. The curls always drop to waves but that’s fine for me.

Youcunnyfunt · 15/02/2022 11:36

There's a process - first, use heat protection and make tight curls (using whichever tool you prefer), but you need to slide the tool out while keeping the curl sprung - use a clip to hold it to your scalp to let it cool and set. Then you need to use hairspray, lots of it. Then finger comb out. Then spray a light final finishing spray.

Ariela · 15/02/2022 11:48

You're wasting your time if your hair is wrong for it. I spent lots on all over curly perm afro style as was fashionable circa 1980. It dropped out in 2 weeks, hairdresser re-did it and again 2 weeks barely a wave to be seen. Some hair is destined not to curl.

MoltenLasagne · 15/02/2022 11:59

I have used the remington curl revolution for my fine hair with a load of setting spray. It actually curls and then the second day is still in waves which is incredible as previously curls from GHDs would only last a few hours. It's probably not great for the healthiness of your hair though as it goes up to 230 degrees!

Natty13 · 15/02/2022 12:03

Its your hair that will make the difference, not a curler. I have curly hair and if my hair is lacking protein it will fall to weird flat waves. Try a rice water rinse (I cook the rice in loads of water then smoosh it all though a sieve. Leave on wet hair for 15-30 mins and follow with normal shampoo and deep conditioner) or a store bought protein treatment.

DragonSnapCrimson · 15/02/2022 13:10

Same problem, I even curled my hair last night for Valentine's day and they'd all dropped out before I'd finished my starter :( A few years ago I got so furious that I put my curling iron on max, sprayed the living shit out of my hair with styling spray, held the curl on the barrel for about 20 seconds, then pinned it, then used a bucket of hair spray, left it like that for an hour and they STILL didn't last more than 2 hours!

Literally the only way I can get a curl to hold is using the heatless method, but I still find that very hit and miss as sometimes you wake up looking like a goddess and other times a poodle in need of a trim... tons of tutorials on Youtube, good luck and if you solve it please let me know Grin

Aprilx · 15/02/2022 13:13

I think it is more down to the hair than the tool. My hair has a natural wave to it (that I don’t like by the way, I would love to be straight) but it does mean it will hold a proper curl until the next wash, no matter what is used on me.

declutteringmymind · 15/02/2022 13:20

Ok so I have your hair. All curls drop out 2 hours after I've been to the hairdressers. The only way mine now holds a curl as I have a heavily bleached balayage which has turned my hair into curling ribbon.

Only the lighter bits curl though and I have to olaplex it to high heaven to keep it soft and the ends healthy.

MyNumbBum · 15/02/2022 13:34

I use the Babyliss Curl Secret everyday, sometimes just on the ends. I have quite fine hair, I then use Elnett flexible hold hairspray and works a treat!

CrimbleCrumble1 · 15/02/2022 13:55

The £40 ones from Amazon that suck up your hair. It takes me 7 minutes to do curls on my long hair. I then turn my head upside down, hairspray the lot and the curls stay perfect all day. The day after I have very large waves or at least a lot of body left.
I have super straight, soft, shiny hair.

ILoveToads · 15/02/2022 19:09

I use this

www.paul-mitchell.co.uk/our-products/paul-mitchell/flexible-style/hot-off-the-press/

It works as heat protection also, makes my hair shiney and keeps the curl held. A little goes a long way.

MaddieElla · 15/02/2022 19:23

I use a wand, curls stay in all night. If I use ghds they drop within the hour.

I have properly straight fine hair, but the wand works every time

CrimbleCrumble1 · 15/02/2022 19:26

These are similar to the ones I use.

Is there a hair curler which actually holds hair in curls???
Thymeout · 15/02/2022 21:19

Find a hairdresser who's been taught how to perm. Some sort of body wave will be better for your hair than frying it every day. It'll probably be an older hairdresser, who went to college when they still taught perming, before the craze for straighteners, but none the worse for that.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 15/02/2022 21:23

My fine hair doesn't hold curls, even when hairdresser did it. In fact, in the early 90s I had a perm and even that didn't hold well. However, I tried this heatless method, which worked - after washing my hair, I wrap it around my dressing gown belt and sleep with it in, wake up, unravel it and have lovely curls that last all day and still have nice looser curls the second day - search dressing gown cord curls on YouTube for videos. I couldn't believe how well it worked given my hair's resistance to curling methods!

Cuck00soup · 15/02/2022 21:31

I have a lot of fine, very straight, lifeless hair and use Percy Reed wonderbalm,

Roominmyhouse · 15/02/2022 21:59

I’ve given up on curls. I’ve got fine straight hair and no matter what I do the curls drop out. I’ve decided just to embrace my straight hair which only needs blow drying to be lovely and sleek instead, as much as I’d love to have waves and curls instead.

user47000000000 · 17/02/2022 06:05

Thank you for all these tips! I’ll definitely have a go with the dressing gown cord.

I had seen the ones you mention crimble on Instagram. My hairdresser said they take a long time but 7 mins is definitely doable!

I’ll also try that product mentioned. Keep you posted Smile

I agree with this. My hair is very thick and heavy but has a natural wave. It will hold a curl until washed again, even if days later. My DDs have naturally thick but straight hair and curls drop out within an hour, whatever the method.
SpinningCat2 · 17/02/2022 06:32

I find the only thing that worked for me v was overnight soft curlers and the proper old fashioned setting spray ( do the still even sell it ?) , The thin blue liquid kind. Just the smell reminds me of my mum !

chocolateorangeinhaler · 17/02/2022 06:42

Are you letting it 'set' in the curl after curling? Make the curl then recurl and pin up until the hair is stone cold. Lots of product too. I've heard sea salt spray helps to add a bit of body.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 17/02/2022 16:37

It’s definitely 7 minutes, totally life changing,
