To wonder what is an acceptable time to be knocked awake if their car is blocking the way ...

I'm in a bad mood today (one of my long term foster dogs has gone to his new home today) and so I'm in one of those I hate the world and all the people in it.

Chatting to one of the subbies this morning who also works with an arborist in the week and I was just generally moaning about people - see previous point about mood - and he tells me about a job they did.

Huge tree something like 100ft high needs reducing in height as dangerous. It's right by the road so the firm arranged a road closure. Signs up a week ago. Road closure people turn up on the morning to put up temp traffic lights and whatnot and someone has parked directly under the tree. They find out owners details and about 7.30/8am ask him to move so they can commence work and he refuses because its too early in the morning and tells them to come back later on and ask him to move it or to just work around it ...

He moved it about 90 mins later I think but why would you be such a plonker in the first place? The mood I'm in I'd have just dropped the tree on his car .....

I'm then ranting about the inconsiderate nature of this chap to another friend and she in an absolute shock twist says she thinks he's right. You can't go knocking on people's doors early in the morning. This causes a argument spirited debate between the 2 of us about an acceptable time to be knocked up.

Obviously it's all irrelevant as it's affected neither of us but we won't back down about acceptable knock up times and thus we have agreed to abide my MNs decision on who is unreasonable clearly not me

If there had been signs up all weeks he’s lucky it wasn’t just clamped and towed away at his expense. 7:30 is not unreasonable for something like that!

Sirzy · 13/02/2022 13:38

So he had warning the road would be closed and still parked there? He is lucky it wasn’t towed awayb

Lemonlemon88 · 13/02/2022 13:43

When they put fibre in our street, the note we got said we would be towed to a nearby street if our cars were in the way. Man very unreasonable not moving car.

cordeliavorkosigan · 13/02/2022 13:44

Yes. In those circumstances any time at all is acceptable. He should have been towed and fined for the wasted time.

shaneTwane · 13/02/2022 13:45

Any time day or night is acceptable. If your car is blocking something, especially something you have had adequate warning about.

itsgettingweird · 13/02/2022 13:49

It's acceptable when your an arsehole that parked somewhere you'd been warned in advance not to park.

girlmom21 · 13/02/2022 13:49

I agree they were generous giving him the opportunity to move it. I'd have got it towed out of spite.

HamsterTrumpet · 13/02/2022 13:50

I’ve knocked on my neighbour’s door at 5am before as he was blocking me in (not really his fault) and I had to get to work.

He was fine about it, but then he’s not a cock.

Svara · 13/02/2022 13:50

I'd say from 7am is fine, most people would be awake for work or school, he only needs to throw on t-shirt, joggers, and shoes to move a car and jog back. Any arguments for later would apply to any time of day as you don't know people's working or sleeping hours.

Soubriquet · 13/02/2022 13:51

If your car is blocking the way for anything, any time is acceptable. Even if it’s 3am. If they are blocking your drive and you need to get out, then what are you supposed to do? Wait until morning. No. You find the person and you make them move their car

BlueEyesWhiteDragon · 13/02/2022 13:52

I believe his complaint was that he didn't know the road closure was for the tree as it was just generic this road will be closed signs and so he parked right up on the pavement double dick so he wouldn't be in the way. He feels they should have sent a letter out explaining and and he clearly wouldn't have parked there. Police said council responsibility and council said police responsibility.

Obviously I've got all this third hand though so perhaps they hammered on his door and screamed at him to move Grin

AnotherMansCause · 13/02/2022 13:53

He should have been counting his lucky stars they gave him the opportunity to move it at all! The cheek of some people...

Walkingalot · 13/02/2022 13:53

He ignored the warning signs, probably thinking they wouldn't be starting so early. He's a dick. You are right, your friend is wrong. It was hardly too early at 7.30-8. Most people are up at that time to start their day. The workers had a bona fide reason to do so.

BlueEyesWhiteDragon · 13/02/2022 13:54

.... perhaps they hammered on his door and screamed at him to move so he decided not to to teach them a lesson doubtful

When it was pea harvesting time we used to get woken 2-3 times over a few weeks between midnight and 6am to move cars to allow the viners down the road. They couldn't tell more than 12 hrs in advance went and where they would be and worked 24/7 so it was just a part of village life. Always funny to see people running around in whatever they could throw on at 3am to move cars, then 10 mins later the cars would be back but leaving room for the lorries to go past this time.

Tangelablue · 13/02/2022 14:02

My car was towed from outside my sisters house years ago when the council relayed the road. The work men had no idea where the cars had been moved to and it took me a while wondering the streets till I had found it. I would have moved it if they have knocked and asked tho.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 13/02/2022 14:03

@shaneTwane

agree with this
balalake · 13/02/2022 14:03

If someone did not read large warning signs, their fault and 730am on a weekday is reasonable. I'd have been tempted to give them ten minutes after which I'd allege eyesight is too poor to drive.

SockFluffInTheBath · 13/02/2022 14:04

7:30am isn’t too early and it wouldn’t be weird to go out in pjs to move the car in that instance.

@wombat1a we have similar in our Lane with the combines and balers, ours are always out of the way but there are some who prefer to park on the narrow road than in their own drive.

ISpyCobraKai · 13/02/2022 14:08

Anytime if they've had warning.

I refused to move my car at 8am as there'd been no warning and they were incredibly rude about it.
It also didn't technically need to be moved.

SpikeDearheart · 13/02/2022 14:10

Absolutely not too early, though I do have some sympathy if the signs said simply road closure rather than parking suspension. To me, road closure might mean you can't get in or out, not the the road needs to be cleared of all parked cars iyswim.

We had a road closure with parking suspension recently - the problem was the signs only went up the day before and as we were WFH we didn't leave the house and therefore didn't know! It was no trouble to nip out first thing and move the car though once we were alerted.

LunaLights · 13/02/2022 14:18

He was deliberately being a shit. I’d have had the car towed, or just commenced the work regardless of the car being there.

If you don’t want your door knocked on early in the morning, don’t park your f’ing car where you’ve had adequate notice of work being done. He is the tosser…

Hellolittlestar · 13/02/2022 14:22

If there were signs up before, then middle of the night would also be fine.
Cheeky sod for not moving the car.

DiddyHeck · 13/02/2022 14:26

Chatting to one of the subbies this morning who also works with an arborist in the week and I was just generally moaning about people

FFS THREE times I read that as he also works with an abortionist in the week!!

I've just deleted my question as to why this is relevant, before thankfully noticing my error Blush

Badbaddog · 13/02/2022 14:26

Pressed the wrong button. YANBU. You are being bloody moany though. What’s the point?
