To wonder what is an acceptable time to be knocked awake if their car is blocking the way ...

I'm in a bad mood today (one of my long term foster dogs has gone to his new home today) and so I'm in one of those I hate the world and all the people in it.

Chatting to one of the subbies this morning who also works with an arborist in the week and I was just generally moaning about people - see previous point about mood - and he tells me about a job they did.

Huge tree something like 100ft high needs reducing in height as dangerous. It's right by the road so the firm arranged a road closure. Signs up a week ago. Road closure people turn up on the morning to put up temp traffic lights and whatnot and someone has parked directly under the tree. They find out owners details and about 7.30/8am ask him to move so they can commence work and he refuses because its too early in the morning and tells them to come back later on and ask him to move it or to just work around it ...

He moved it about 90 mins later I think but why would you be such a plonker in the first place? The mood I'm in I'd have just dropped the tree on his car .....

I'm then ranting about the inconsiderate nature of this chap to another friend and she in an absolute shock twist says she thinks he's right. You can't go knocking on people's doors early in the morning. This causes a argument spirited debate between the 2 of us about an acceptable time to be knocked up.

Obviously it's all irrelevant as it's affected neither of us but we won't back down about acceptable knock up times and thus we have agreed to abide my MNs decision on who is unreasonable clearly not me

If the signs were clear, then his car should have been towed. Any company that arranges to close roads needs to be able to get cars hauled quickly to minimise delays.

He's clearly an ass, but they shouldn't have needed to wait for him.

I did this once Blush. Parked my car on a residential street to visit a friend then decided to take the train to a meeting/overnight stay to avoid the drive through a busy city centre. When I got back I discovered that my car had stopped workmen starting roadworks that morning and they'd had to postpone. I had no idea - there were no signs and the street was 'normal' (not empty) when I parked. Apparantly local residents had been told by letter...

He had plenty of warning. We came back from holiday to find our car had been moved for street cleaning. The council brought it back a couple of days later. It wasn't their fault we were away and didn't see the letters.
If I was the tree person I would be sorely tempted to drop bits of tree on the car. These operations are very expensive and time is money.

He is a CF for not moving his car.

tbf with your update, it is possible he could have thought the road was closed for resurfacing or something and therefore parking on the pavement was a good idea? Often signs are not very clear. Or he could have thought the work wouldn't start until a bit later. Without knowing the full details it's a bit harsh to call him a twat.

Personally if I'd found out I'd misinterpreted and was causing someone else a delay I would have apologised and gone straight out - unless the person was really rude over what was a fair enough misunderstanding. If they were a complete twat I might take 10 mins to get changed etc. 90mins is a complete piss take though.

In terms of the general q - 7.30 is def not too early if you have caused an issue to someone else's detriment (e.g. blocking someone in), if it's an emergency, or something to benefit you (e.g. a parcel being delivered). Even if I was asleep I'd fully understand any of those. However if it was a chugger or someone knocking about a conservatory or religion I would 100% be pissed off.

Yeah because obviously his car being parked outside his house is obviously more important than any pedestrian, including those with pushchairs or wheelchairs

IncompleteSenten · 13/02/2022 16:29

Any time is an acceptable time to knock on someone's door if they have knowingly blocked the way. That includes parking over your driveway and parking somewhere there are signs telling you not to.

He wasn't parked outside his house though, he was parked by the tree? OP said they had to find out his details suggesting he could be living anywhere in the street. Pavements could have easily been wide enough to park on - they are in my street. I was clear in saying it was not something I would do but it makes me laugh when posters who don't know the actual circumstances just make them up and then are ready to haul someone over the coals after hearing a 3rd hand take from one point of view.

Anytime if you’re parked like a dick despite plenty of warnings.

They should’ve towed him at his expense
