To think I could have diabetes?

Obviously I know nobody can diagnose me on here, just wanting to chat about it before I ask for blood tests.

So - last blood test (about 4 months ago) just showed that I was anaemic.

Since then … past few months I’ve been thirsty constantly - and I don’t mean I just fancy more cups of tea, I mean my mouth is so dry I feel totally dehydrated. I’m drinking tons of bottled water (refilling with tap water before anyone starts).
Obviously I’m peeing a lot more too.

I’ve lost nearly a stone in weight whilst still eating biscuits, crisps, takeaways etc - I have gone teetotal after being binge drinking beer 4 days a week so that could be contributing to weight loss but not this much surely …

I keep going light headed and keep getting headaches. Visual disturbances (like the room suddenly feeling like it’s shaking)

I’m ridiculously fatigued - barely left the sofa yesterday and I’m so irritable.

My grandmother has diabetes.

I’m not overweight. I’m 40.

YABU - not diabetes, give your head a wobble, get your ducks in a row and leave the bastard.
YANBU - yep, sounds a lot like diabetes! Congrats OP!

Sounds like diabetes, dry skin is another symptom.

Worth checking and hope you feel better soon.

tttigress · 13/02/2022 12:08

My advice is get tested asap, no point in internet speculation.

However I once wondered if I had diabetes (probably caused by so many adverts about, "have you got diabetes?")

When I asked a friend about it who had type diabetes the symptoms sounded so horrific that I realised I hadn't (I did get tested though)

BluebellsGreenbells · 13/02/2022 15:51

How did you get on OP?

DoorbellsSleighbellsSchnitzel · 14/02/2022 00:00

Any news, OP? Hoping all's well.

Bonnieweejeaniemccall · 14/02/2022 00:27

Sounds very similar to me, I got diagnosed with type 1 at 31 years old.

Basically googled all my symptoms and was like "shit I have all of those". Booked a doctors app the next day and the rest is history.

Please don't wait, I was very lucky I acted so quickly and managed to avoid any DKA or hospital stay. Hope you are OK op.

ShittyFingers · 14/02/2022 08:56

I’m at GP at 10:20 today. I put my symptoms into the online appointment request and the GP rang me straight away.
Feel like shit this morning, no energy at all. Last night I had heart palpitations and elevated HR all evening. I stood up to go to toilet and my HR shot up to 120.

Good luck. I'm glad your GP is on the ball.

XiCi · 14/02/2022 09:11

Good luck OP. The palpitations and increased HR could be anxiety. I have health anxiety and if I'd googled myself into thinking I had diabetes I would absolutely have palpitations and high HR. I hope you get some answers today and its not as serious as you fear.

Lavender24 · 14/02/2022 09:19

Yep I'm type one and that sounds exactly like me before I was diagnosed. I agree with those saying go to a walk in centre. This needs to be treated ASAP.

I'm so glad you managed to get an appointment. Good luck 👍

Pharmacy might check a finger prick blood sugar

ivykaty44 · 14/02/2022 09:43

Let’s hope you get it sorted promptly

liveforsummer · 14/02/2022 09:44

The blood test should have shown it up but you can go to a pharmacy for a finger prick and find out on the spot.

liveforsummer · 14/02/2022 09:45

Also all the symptoms you describe are what I experienced when I had covid including the extreme thirst and the horrible taste/breath has it been since then. Could it be a long covid thing?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 14/02/2022 09:47

I’ve not called doctor as it’s impossible to get an appointment

Well of course it's impossible if you don't even try.

Cut out the biscuits and crap food for a start.

And you need medical advice and/or blood tests.

Would help if you read the thread. She's at the Doctors this morning.
Lougle · 14/02/2022 10:32

I'm glad you have a GP appointment. It does sound like diabetes but whatever it is, you aren't well.

Biscuits and crap food don't cause T1 diabetes. FFS 🙄. What a helpful response.
ShittyFingers · 14/02/2022 16:22

Thanks everyone, he tested my urine (clear) and pulse (fine) and blood pressure. BP is low.

He did a blood test there and then to test for diabetes, thyroid and anaemia - I should get the results back on Wednesday

You do need some blood tests. My sibling has excessive thirst which is part of a different condition that they have and has tested negative for Diabetes . Whereas I’m diabetic (T2) and have never had any symptoms. So you never can tell until you have the blood tests.

Isthisrealisthisnow · 14/02/2022 16:33

Diabetes or not you need a doctor!
