To ask my neighbours not to hang dead animals from their fence?

New neighbours like to shoot. That’s their choice, but they hang the animals they kill from their front garden fence for all to see. It’s usually pheasants and sometimes rabbits. Aibu to think this is pretty inconsiderate behaviour? I’m veggie and find it quite upsetting. There are kids about too.

It’s a rural area but not isolated or remote.

I'm not vegetarian but wouldn't like that (probably hypocritical of me). I wouldn't want my children looking at it all through time either. YANBU.

StripyOnesie · 12/02/2022 15:13

Wouldn't bother me.

SeasonFinale · 12/02/2022 15:14

It's not for all to see though - it is to hang the meat before they eat it. I might ask if there is somewhere else they may hang it so that you don't have to see it. But bee prepared for them to say it is their fence for them to use as they please if they are so inclined.

ohhooh · 12/02/2022 15:16

How long do they hang them for? Especially game, you hang before plucking / eating etc. depends on the season but a few days imo is normally sufficient.

RagzRebooted · 12/02/2022 15:17

Do you object to butchers shops having see through windows?

RagzRebooted · 12/02/2022 15:18

DH used to hang rabbits on our fence. It was the back garden though!

GirlInACountrySong · 12/02/2022 15:19

I'd worry it would attract vermin

It’s their fence they can do what they like.

I don’t tend to look but it feels as though I can’t avoid seeing this.

I’m on the fence on this one (pardon the pun).

Our local butchers have pheasants hanging in their window, and one of the local pubs often has groups calling in after a shoot and several of them will have a brace of pheasants hanging off their belts.

That’s rural life.

Suzanne999 · 12/02/2022 15:21

YANBU. Their dead animals, they hang them where only they can see them. Inconsiderate.

SoupDragon · 12/02/2022 15:21

Do people generally leave it to "hang" outside for this?

crochetmonkey74 · 12/02/2022 15:22

Children can see dead animals. Nothing to worry about there and sorry to be harsh but this is a fact of life, especially country life

I’d have no issue with this.

Put something up in your garden that blocks the view

I just think it would be potentially quite upsetting if you had a pet rabbit or something

Still have to walk/drive past it

Grim. Back garden fence at least. Why on earth would you hang them out front

And do they have to hang it where they do? Can’t they hang it on the inside or the back fence

Gives kids a chance to find out that meat doesn't originate shrink wrapped at Asda

A meat eater I know objected to this at the local farmer's market. He got very short shrift from me.

PlinkPlankPlunk · 12/02/2022 15:28

I doubt it’s to hang the meat tbh; if you’re rural they would get eaten straight away by foxes or birds!

powershowerforanhour · 12/02/2022 15:28

Bit weird. Everyone I know hangs game in a shed or garage. Won't the magpies get it?
The shooting groups my husband is on on FB and the friends he shoots with would take a dim view of this- shoving it in other people's faces is not really considered the done thing.

lljkk · 12/02/2022 15:29

Need a pic and idea of how far away their fence is from your house windows (diagram would help) to be sure in response.

I don't think you would be U to ask them to hang carcasses somewhere more out of public view. Just say you're squeamish. Not an issue worth falling out over, though.

Thank you. I respect their choice but just do t want it shoved in my face.
