To ask what I can do for a job whilst travelling around the world in a campervan with a dog?

I'm half joking.
Thinking of my later years and a friends sister does just this, sold her home, travels extensively, only needs a laptop and WiFi connection. But she's an accountant and I'm terrible at maths.
Are there other jobs which could be done like this? Thinking of any courses I could take to prepare for this life. End goal would be to sell house (mortgage free) and get kids on the housing ladder. Obviously if I need care then it would be factored in with money set aside.

Assuming you don't need much money, could you tutor online? Teach English?

Butternutsqoosh · 12/02/2022 12:05

I want to come with you!!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 12/02/2022 12:05

Something that didn’t involve a lot of Teams meetings - you wouldn’t be able to rely on WiFi if you were travelling. I couldn’t do my job without reliable WiFi (project manager) because I spend a lot of time in meetings, but I work with people who spend most of their time doing things like data analysis and without much face to face time. So data analyst!

Freelance writer/copy editor?

hilariousnamehere · 12/02/2022 12:06

I planned to do this as a photographer for businesses (which I still am) but then got cats instead of dogs and they don't travel well, so I spent the money on a studio for my personal work Grin

What kind of thing do you enjoy doing? Copywriting, graphic design, web design, virtual assistant work, illustration, lots of stuff lends itself to working anywhere but you need to build a reputation as you won't have as much of a physical/word of mouth base if you're travelling. Good thing to start before you go though!

Damnloginpopup · 12/02/2022 12:08

Rent your house out instead of selling it and you have a base income.

JollyAndBright · 12/02/2022 12:14

I have a friend who decided to do this in 2020, she teaches English as a second language (no teaching qualifications needed, you basically need to be able to speak English and be good at talking to kids)
It’s all online and she sets her own hours.
You just need a good internet connection and a laptop.
She’s currently in South Africa and I’m very jealously following her travels via texts and Instagram.

Probably loads of ideas in NomadLand

Land management, producer picker, camping warden, forestry, other agriculture, those jobs come to mind.

JunoLunar · 12/02/2022 12:21

I have an English degree and have done TEFL before so I guess that is my best bet?

Rent your house (a base income as PP pointed out)
Online tutoring.
Travel reviews/surveys which pay.
Create bespoke items and sell on Etsy.
Supermarket jobs - base yourself in a region for 3 months at a time and travel around it?

Sterpie · 12/02/2022 12:27

The online tefl industry is mostly poorly paid (under min wage for lots, no sick pay, pension, freelance etc) ,made worse by the fact the new education laws in China shut down loads of the big companies that employed people.

I would suggest retraining as something else personally. It's a crappy industry to work in for the most part or if you're going to do it try and build up your own clients and bookings rather than relying on the companies as they can pull the rug and disappear or change your pay to lower at the drop of a hat.

The film and the book are quite different in time (but both brilliant). Seriously, read the book - it made !E want to do this and I'm very much not that type! It doesn't shy away from the unpleasant bits, but still manages to make it sound wonderful.
JesusInTheCabbageVan · 12/02/2022 12:41

*me, not !E

TheNoodlesIncident · 12/02/2022 12:59

You could write a book about your experience travelling around in the campervan with the dog. Just don't call it "Travels With Charley" as Steinbeck's descendants will be cross.

I do think renting out your house is a better option, as you'll have the rental income and you haven't burned your boats if the campervan thing doesn't work out.

llanfairpg3 · 12/02/2022 13:13

I don't know how much those who post travel videos of their adventures on YouTube or Patreon make, but they either have savings or must have a reasonable income from it. Mind you, you'd have to spend money on a range of bikinis if some are anything to go by.

Freelance writer/copy editor?
Can you tell me what this entails? What IS a freelance writer and how does one get into it? I’m desperate to work from home - my back is giving up on me and I can’t see my nursing career lasting much longer.
TheCanyon · 12/02/2022 13:23

House/pet sitting.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 12/02/2022 13:50

Look pretty and be an influencer?

DysmalRadius · 12/02/2022 14:58

@ShittyFingers

If you have medical knowledge, then you could be a good person to do medical writing - it requires an understanding of terminology and the ability to sense-check stuff that non-medics don't have, so it's not as flooded as the general writing market.

If you search on job boards for freelance medical writer roles, you will get an idea of the variety of opportunities out there.

KarmaStar · 12/02/2022 17:19

Groom dogs?
Blogger
Teach
Pick up casual work?
Sounds brilliant .

happyfroday · 12/02/2022 22:09

@ShittyFingers freelance just means self employed or a contractor via a limited company or umbrella company. I have my own company ( just me) so a big company takes on my company and pays me a day rate to do a regular 1/2/3/4/5 a week or sometimes just adhoc / occasional days here and there ( less desirable.) So no sick pay, no pension, no holiday and often no security depending on it you get a contract or not and what it says.

A copywriter might write text for products for sale on websites or leaflets or adverts or anything written etc. You would need to have an adaptable style to write like the brand or to develop their style ( known as their tone of voice). How innocent smoothies write would be different to Persil washing powder.

I am not a copywriter, because I cannot use the correct spelling or punctuation Grin. But if you are in HC maybe you could write training or start that way.

shaneTwane · 12/02/2022 22:11

Snap op! I've been following kinging it on Facebook, a couple who actually live in a bus and travel round working online. My dream life one day.

BelleC · 22/02/2022 04:58

You could possibly work as a VA-can be quite lucrative Smile. They are recruiting at sidesparkz.recruitee.com/o/virtual-assistant

NurseButtercup · 22/02/2022 05:06

Have you watched the film Nomadland it's based on a woman who does exactly what you're describing and it's supposed to be a brilliant film.
