To buy new knickers annually?

WorkEvent · 11/02/2022 10:08

I used to be able to hang on to knickers for years but since having children my preference for massive pants seems to mean that they go a bit baggy and shapeless in less than a year. Is it unreasonable to buy pants yearly or even more frequently? What’s normal here?!

Does it matter what is normal? If you need new pants, get new pants.

Surely the lifecycle of other peoples undercrackers is irrelevant?

Vispa · 11/02/2022 10:12

Try buying better quality ones that last longer?

GiantSpider · 11/02/2022 10:14

Personally I find my knickers last longer than that. But YANBU to buy new knickers if you need them!

AnotherMansCause · 11/02/2022 10:14

Where are you buying them from? I think I've got pants that are at least as old as DD (9) & they're still fine. Bog standard, 5 pack, from M&S, Morrisons, Tesco etc. I think a couple might have a very minor 2-5mm hole where the elastic has come loose, but certainly none are baggy or faded! WTF are you doing to them? Do you boil wash everything?

Gowithme · 11/02/2022 10:15

I buy M&S, they're not as good as they used to be but last far longer than Asda or other cheaper ones I find. Worth paying a bit more to last a lot longer.

abigailsnan · 11/02/2022 10:15

Yearly you must be joking surely !! I buy new nicks every couple of months usually 4/5 pairs at a time and throw out the oldest in my drawer when I do a purchase of new ones.I have comfy ones for daily wear/holiday ones and big ones in case I have to go into hospital at any time

BarbaraofSeville · 11/02/2022 10:16

Yes, just buy them when you need them, whether it's monthly or every decade, although if its the former, buy better quality ones.

I wear shorts style pants from M&S and I'm sure they're 2-3 years old and no sign of going baggy or shapeless.

ApolloandDaphne · 11/02/2022 10:17

My fanjo seems to like to chew the gussets of my knickers and they get a bit holey so I am forever chucking them and buying new ones.

cherryonthecakes · 11/02/2022 10:17

I buy supermarket multipacks and they are 5+ years old

Just why?

Some people are ridiculously wasteful. You're not one of those who buys new pillows and duvets every few months too are you?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 11/02/2022 10:20

Dispose of them when they wear out
Buy new when running short. (Before a holiday usually).

Plumface · 11/02/2022 10:24

YABU and v wasteful. I make my own knickers from shredded conkers. Your knickers are killing the planet OP. I bet you wash them sometimes too.

WorkEvent · 11/02/2022 10:24

These are M&S pants!! I think because I tend to buy cotton it just goes a bit ‘meh’ after a while rather than the lycra laden pants of my younger years.

OP posts:
ColettesEarrings · 11/02/2022 10:28

I've got some pants and socks older than my 20yr marriage, not many but a few definitely. I've bought new maybe six times in those twenty years?

jamie83 · 11/02/2022 10:37

What! No comments on the Utility Symbol or what to do with blackout material?

RosesAndHellebores · 11/02/2022 10:38

It depends how any you have I guess. I have about 30 and probably top up with 3/4 once a year.

Do you sort your laundry into hot lights, delicate lights, etc?

Like others I think M&S knockers are not the quality they were and I'd rather pay a bit more. However, I have bought expensive Triumph ones and found they last no longer.

Chloemol · 11/02/2022 10:39

I have M&S ones, cotton, lasted me years and years, in fac5 some must be 15 years old now

Come up good 8n the wash every time

bilbodog · 11/02/2022 10:50

My sloggi ones last 2-3 years.

Why?! Mine are a couple of years old and are fine What's the point in binning perfectly good stuff?
Keepitonthedownlow · 11/02/2022 10:57

So wasteful. Unless they have holes what is the actual problem wearing them. Unless it's another thing you feel you have to do for male approval.

NoNeedToArgue · 11/02/2022 10:58

I've just discovered Snag knickers which are gorgeous, really thick cotton and very secure! I'm not expecting to have to replace them for ages. They are very excellent.

babybunny123 · 11/02/2022 11:07

Tesco last longer for me now than M&S, cheaper too.

I gave up M&S for Bonds and Sloggi for ordinary workday cotton pants years ago. They cost more than M&S multipacks but hold their shape for year after year. They're like M&S were in the 80s and 90s.

I'm a fan of Sloggi's Tai Comfort but also have some midis and maxis.

I tend to buy myself four pairs a year and I probably have 24 perfectly decent pairs on the go with a few older ones in reserve for emergencies.

Bonds are Australian and I've picked them up while travelling. Those I have are exceptionally good quality cotton. I notice they have a 40% sale on at the moment and ship internationally, so I might order some more:

GeneLovesJezebel · 11/02/2022 11:18

I buy more when they get holes in.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 11/02/2022 11:20

If you have to go to hospital I'm sure nobody will care if your pants are a bit grey.
