AIBU to say no to these sausages?

DH has found some Richmond vegetarian sausages in the freezer that went out of date in June last year. On the back of the packaging it says freeze 2 days before use by date and then consume within 1 month. He thinks they’ll be fine! I’m worried that I’ll be spending the next two nights looking at the bathroom door or worse the inside of the toilet bowl? Tell me IANBU please

I never check dates on food in the freezer and never had an issue!

Mum2jenny · 10/02/2022 21:38

They’ll be fine. Unless any frozen items have freezer burn, I will cook and eat them. Anything frozen dated earlier than 2020 I’d probably bin unless it looked really good.

liveforsummer · 10/02/2022 21:44

You can't stick to use by dates if you are freezing things or you'd only be able to freeze them for a couple of days and might as well not freeze them at all. One month is unusual you can freeze meat a lot longer. I'd eat them no problem

rubydoobydoo · 10/02/2022 21:44

Richmond veggie sausages are actually decent!
I'm not a veggie but I bought some that I found in the reduced section, not realising they weren't the meat ones, to shove in the freezer. Ate them a few months later and they were fine (and so was I!)

Ohyesiam · 10/02/2022 21:45

They will deffo be fine

RosiePosieDozy · 10/02/2022 21:50

I wouldn't eat them if they were meat but I am very sure that you will be absolutely fine as they aren't meat. I love vegan Richmond's.

T00Ts · 10/02/2022 21:54

@Scarby9

The whole point of freezing is that the item is preserved. I wouldn't eat them if they had been defrosted anf refrozen at any point, or if they had freezer burn, but otherwise they will be fine.
I’m always staggered in here by how many people don’t realise this.

If they’re going to still adhere to the ‘use by’ dates, what exactly do they think a freezer is for?!

rattlemehearties · 10/02/2022 21:54

Are you sure you're reading the label right - freeze and then use within 1 month? Unless you're using a freezer shelf in a fridge then you should be able to eat it safely after months in the freezer

Aprilx · 10/02/2022 21:55

@Creativebee

Really? I tend to stick to use by dates, I have a “fear” of getting sick and these are like 7 months out of date.
But they have been frozen. Use by dates don’t count when you have frozen something.
shouldhavebeen · 11/02/2022 07:10

I've eaten pork sausages that have been in the freezer for two years. I thought if food is frozen it doesn't matter when you it, providing it doesn't have freezer burn, which I think is harmless anyway.

Creativebee · 11/02/2022 08:22

I survived!!!
They were actually delicious and tasted better than the ones kept in the fridge. I thought DH was going to make them with onion gravy, mash and peas but no we had chips, eggs, beans, sausages with brown sauce. As he put it, “a proper man’s dinner” Confused it did taste good though.
Thank you everyone, I most probably wouldn’t have eaten them if everyone hadn’t said they’d be fine.

Glad you survived OP!

Is freezer burn where things get all frosty? Is that a problem necessarily?

SpaghettiArmsMurderer · 11/02/2022 09:06

Glad you overcame your fear OP. Use within x after freezing just means the quality or flavour may deteriorate, not that it’s unsafe to eat - I would personally eat frozen stuff after any length of time. I also eat non frozen stuff after its date using my nose. I’ve never had food poisoning!

Creativebee · 11/02/2022 09:49

@RocketAndAFuckingMelon I did a quick search because I wasn’t aware of freezer burn, apparently Meat and other foods with freezer burn are still safe to eat. Freezer burn draws out moisture and flavor. This affects the quality (according to Webmd).

I would have used them no problem and as a meat eater I think those sausages are really very good

diddl · 11/02/2022 10:40

Glad you're OK!

Is there a limit to how long things can be frozen?

I think I remember seeing something?

Or maybe that's a recommendation & things might be safe to eat but no longer at their best?

If you don't want to eat stuff though, you don't have to even if others think it's ok!

Think I have tomorrows lunch sorted now-sausage, mash, peas & onion gravy!

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 11/02/2022 10:51

They won't be off, food just loses it flavour and texture if kept too long. They might taste rank but they won't kill you!
