To wonder why people work so far away?

So many people upset about going back to the office which I do understand but I have seen so many posts bemoaning that they had to commute for hours and hours.

Didn’t people realise this before applying for the job? Why were people working hundreds of miles away and hoping for a pandemic to come and sort out the problem?

Some people were used to their (ridiculous) commutes, but they've got used to a better balance now, realised that there's more to life etc. It's also possible that their circumstances have changed, things that they'd have maybe not done (pets children) because it wouldn't fit with the lifestyle they had.

Co-parenting. Need to be able to afford a job somewhere to live and stay to in close proximity to the ex to co-parent.

If it were up to me I would have moved somewhere cheaper and shorter in commute a long time ago (and get more property for my money). I work in central London and can only afford a flat with a 1.5 hour commute each way. Was easier when we were dinks and had time to play with. Now I’m just a perpetually exhausted pigeon. But needs must
