To think it’s nobody’s business what I do with my money?

I went in to my bank to withdraw a large amount of cash. I explained to the cashier what I wanted to do and she proceeded to ask some security questions - all fine.

One of the questions was what I wanted the cash for so I said I was having building work done. She then started saying that I should pay by bank transfer, it was tax avoidance etc. etc. When I insisted I still wanted to withdraw the money, she sighed and rolled her eyes and I felt really judged and like I’d done something wrong.

I’m glad now that I didn’t admit the real reason is in case the banking system collapses and it’s now stuffed under my mattress.

Please tell me I’m not wrong to think she had no right to judge me and if she did, she should have been professional and not passed comment?

I used to have an online savings account with the same bank that I used to keep surplus funds in, and move back and forth to/from the current account when needed. One day I needed to make a 4 figure transfer between my accounts to pay a direct debit due to be taken the next day and the bank blocked it. They wouldn't tell me why. The only solution was to go in person to the branch in the next town (as of course ours was closed) in the middle of my working day with photo ID. In front of everyone the cashier made some comment which was basically asking if we were in financial difficulty (we weren't). I forget the absolute details now as it was a few years ago but thinking about it still increases my blood pressure. It was totally out of order and so unnecessarily stressful.

@countrygirl99 - Jesus that’s awful. It happens all too often sadly.

Op please reconsider and read up on the financial services compensation scheme.

My whippet loves it, clotted cream too. She’s an utter piglet!

Oh get over it OP. What. A ridiculous thing to get annoyed about.

I have many worries about a cashless society too, OP.

Today I was in Tesco and the contactless / phone payments had went down. It was utter chaos. Huge queues, people irate and concerned at having to leave their shopping cause they couldn't pay for it, constant announcements over the tannoys. One lady was saying how she couldn't get on a train.

Really consolidated my thoughts on how we are handing so much control to a small number of people.

For the sake of what? A tiny bit more convenience, which is negated by the inconvenience when things like today happen (not the first time I've been in a shop and that's happened either). It's not even that much more convenient! How did we ever get on before!

Agree. I don't know why the OP is getting such a hard time. There's nothing wrong with keeping some cash at home. You'd be crazy not to IMO. I wouldn't be keeping multiple 10s of 1000s in my home, but several thousand yes. Or at least 1.5 to 2 thousand minimum in case of emergencies. In case you can't access your bank/your accounts are frozen/a major countrywide banking problem causes glitches and puts everyone offline for a week.

Very unlikely to happen but not impossible, and I (like the OP and other posters) reserve the right to keep cash at home, just in case of the worst case scenario, without being mocked/laughed at/called ridiculous, and told to grow up and get over it etc...

Based on this thread - if I were a burglar, I'd be combing social media etc for people who are into prepping etc. Absolute goldmines, the lot of you. Grin Hope you all namechange regularly, keep a close eye on privacy settings, keep any stockpiled items out of sight of windows/visitor, and also take care who you discuss prepping with irl.

Cheap wine and loose Gentlemen would have been my answer.

The advisors face would have been proper twisty if you'd actually given your real reason. Proper bonkers!
