AIBU - vomiting on the tv

It’s everywhere now, isn’t it?

Every drama/series we watch, there seems to always been a scene where someone throws up. And the thing is, that don’t just infer it, they show you all the stuff coming out!

I hate it!

Probably because I have a fear of vomit.

But surely others have noticed too?

Unreasonable - it’s fine! Get over it!

Reasonable - why oh why oh why do they have to show it with such clarity? Blurrghhhh!!

I don't like seeing it, but I don't think it is "everywhere now". Can't recall last time I saw it.

I hate that scene in Stand By Me, my ex thought it was hilarious. Also that films/series of films, about a group of girls in a singing contest - oh, Pitch Perfect.

Hugasauras · 08/02/2022 12:00

Ha I'm thinking about that scene in Bridesmaids now.

I haven't noticed it any more than usual though! Maybe some high up TV bod has bought shares in vegetable soup.

Traumdeuter · 08/02/2022 12:03

Agreed, I hate it. I avoid medical shows, pregnancy storylines, and anything else like that but it does seem to be more frequent now.

Well everywhere is an exaggeration but the dramas on recently; that submarine one with Suranne Jones, The Teacher, The Tourist, Trigger Point, Stay Safe (or close, can’t remember which!). So everywhere that I watch!

Weirdly, I don’t remember that scene in Stand by Me and I won’t be googling it to remind myself!

The Bridemaids scene is absolutely disgusting and completely unnecessary. I'm with you OP, I have no need to see or hear anything vomit related. I don't find it funny, so see no place for it comedies and in serious stuff it can surely just be implied.

I did think this post would be about your booze hound husband throwing up on your TV though Grin

NightmareSlashDelightful · 08/02/2022 12:07

I've never liked it but I've become desensitised to it now.

Although when it's totally over-the-top I still really loathe it for some reason. Like in Pitch Perfect, Team America, or the ghastly WI character in Little Britain.

I've seen all the shows you list (not finished The Tourist yet, git bored of it) and can't recall a vomit scene in any, I must have wiped it from my mind. I do turn away when they happen.

I agree there's too much obvious "stuff" now, rather than just sound or off camera mention of it.

Stand By Me was when they had some challenge to eat loads of blueberry pie. Revolting.

Agree about Little Britain too, totally stupid character and unfunny "joke".

Daenerys77 · 08/02/2022 12:19

There really ought to be a warning signal that flashes up in the corner of the screen.

NannyR · 08/02/2022 12:19

The only time I recall seeing it was in Gentleman Jack, and it stuck in my mind because it was quite funny. I've seen a few of the other shows you mention and if I saw it happen it didnt really register with me.

cobblers123 · 08/02/2022 12:22

I hate it too OP.

SickAndTiredAgain · 08/02/2022 12:23

I hate it too. Always makes me feel genuinely quite nauseated.
But thankfully it’s often (not always) predictable, and DH knows to mute it when I say “she’s going to be sick!”

Pinkflask · 08/02/2022 12:24

I feel about this as I do about sex and violence in TV shows - we all know what’s happening, we can follow the storyline perfectly well if something is just alluded to, there’s no need to show the whole gory thing! If someone was vomiting in the room with me I wouldn’t bloody watch so why do I have to see it on TV?

MistyGreenAndBlue · 08/02/2022 12:25

Dont watch House then. Someone barfs in pretty much every episode. Sometimes with blood..

Cdmlover · 08/02/2022 12:25

The Teacher - round the back of a tree.

The Tourist - side tee police station.

Suranne Jones - as she got out of that big missile tube.

But maybe as it is fleeting, for those who won’t recall it, it’s as you aren’t bothered by it. However clearly, as I remember the scenes, it bothers me more!

@Daenerys77

There really ought to be a warning signal that flashes up in the corner of the screen.
I noticed on some editions of You've Been Framed* that they do put a vomit-coming-up warning, I guessed that they'd had complaints.

I hate it too and my DS is getting more and more sensitive about it, he can't even read about people vomiting any more. So I would appreciate warnings in advance, although I can imagine the people who aren't bothered would think of us as snowflakes. Meh.

*Don't judge us, it was on in the background

DockOTheBay · 08/02/2022 12:37

Yeah it's grim. It doesn't add to the plot to see someone spit up a can of soup or whatever they use for a vomit substitute. It's not funny or dramatic, it's just grim.

NotImpossible · 08/02/2022 12:39

I hate it too. Not sure it's increased though? The one I notice far tok often is toothbrushing - I can't stand to look at it but it seems to be a thing now to show characters brushing their teeth. Why?!

JohnKettleyIsAWeatherMan · 08/02/2022 12:40

I hate seeing it too, it's so gross. Perfectly possible to convey that someone is vomiting without showing the vomit.

If any fellow emetophobes are thinking of seeing the film 'Booksmart', be prepared to look away during one particular scene. Ditto certain episodes of Cuckoo and The Inbetweeners... I certainly wished I had. Envy

LittleMG · 08/02/2022 12:41

I hate it and there is usually no warning either!!!

Vapeyvapevape · 08/02/2022 12:46

I don't like it and have no idea how actors hold whatever in their mouths to then spit it out, it would make me properly vomit if I had to do that.

Georgeskitchen · 08/02/2022 12:47

No it's gross and totally unnecessary. They don't show people defecating with the faeces actually exiting their arse do they!!

Andante57 · 08/02/2022 12:48

I absolutely hate it and I ask friends if there are vomiting scenes before I watch a drama or film.
They’re usually completely gratuitous such as in the otherwise wonderful film Florence Foster Jenkins, and that grim scene at the theme park in Succession.
Dh and I watch mainly Korean drama but that’s not exempt, unfortunately.
There’s a website called ‘Phobias at the Movies’ which has lists of films with vomit, needles, snakes, spiders and a few others, but it’s not comprehensive.

toastofthetown · 08/02/2022 12:48

I hate it too, but I don’t think it’s a new thing. Vom scenes have been a thing as far as I can remember.

niki26 · 08/02/2022 12:50

Completely unnecessary in my opinion too - what was the purpose of the vomiting in the last episode of After Life? Just gross.

Karwomannghia · 08/02/2022 12:54

I used to have a phobia so I’m still sensitive to it and yes it’s in most dramas. It’s an easy trick to show big reactions. Was even in sex and the city the new one! No escape!
