AIBU - vomiting on the tv

It’s everywhere now, isn’t it?

Every drama/series we watch, there seems to always been a scene where someone throws up. And the thing is, that don’t just infer it, they show you all the stuff coming out!

I hate it!

Probably because I have a fear of vomit.

But surely others have noticed too?

Unreasonable - it’s fine! Get over it!

Reasonable - why oh why oh why do they have to show it with such clarity? Blurrghhhh!!

I've never thought about it as I'm not bothered about vomiting, but I do remember seeing it a fair bit now that you've mentioned it. Somebody upthread said that you wouldn't see shit actually exiting someone's backside, which is true. You might see someone go for a wee, but not usually actually see it come out.

I feel the same way about needles. They seem to appear in every single programme I watch, no matter the topic. There's no way they are a common, everyday item for most of the public. How can they appear so frequently?? I do have a needle phobia and it is horrible to see them suddenly appear.

I did think this post would be about your booze hound husband throwing up on your TV though

I thought that, or a drunken teenager not being able to find the toilet!

Can't say I've particularly noticed people throwing up on tv, but then it doesn't bother me so perhaps not something I'd pay too much attention to anyway.

I agree with you, disgusting and quite unnecessary, always leaves me feeling sick and shaky as well. Like other posters have said, they don’t show people taking a dump or close ups of sanitary pads/tampon removal so why this?

EricScrantona · 08/02/2022 14:02

I used to hate this due to a proper sick phobia. Having a baby who was constantly sick on me help but it still gets me sometimes. Just show someone gag and be done with it. Surely even those that aren't scared of vomit aren't keen to see it?

The date scene in And Just Like That Shock
Did make a laugh out loud though but horrific for an emetephobe!

My creative writing tutor at uni told me I had to stop writing about it/using words that suggested it. I hadnt noticed it kept cropping up. He said it was something subconscious about the act of being creative, symbolic of things coming up from inside.
My mum's the same as you op, cannot bear it, though fine with other disgusting things.

I used to have to make people up like they were injured for practising on by med staff. Chunky veg soup held in the mouth makes excellent vomit. I can't eat it now!

I agree about the scene in Bridesmaids being gratuitous. I read somewhere that the film was initially going to be a little quirky indie comedy, but the writers teamed up with a big producer who wanted all the gross-out / humiliation stuff for a broader appeal.

GladysAndFred · 08/02/2022 15:15

I don't think it's everywhere, but the last 2 episodes of The Crown I watched on Netflix did include vomiting. 🤢
I usually turn away from the screen when they are showing any gross details, I'm very squeamish.

ABitOfAShitShow · 08/02/2022 15:23

I've noticed this uptick in graphic vomiting!

It probably wouldn't even register with me if it weren't for the fact my best mate has crippling emetophobia and I always think it would be terrible if she was watching!

Momicrone · 08/02/2022 15:54

I hate the trend for showing people on the toilet in dramas

Bedsheets4knickers · 08/02/2022 16:33

I couldn't watch casualty as a child because of this .

EishetChayil · 08/02/2022 17:12

It's grim.

I also hate it how actors cough when they're pretending to vomit.

Bagamoyo1 · 08/02/2022 17:29

I’m not bothered about the vomiting, but I’ve noticed smoking featuring much more than it used to. Back in the 70s and 80s loads of characters smoked, then none did, and in the last few years it seems they’re all smoking again. I watched No Return last night and Sheridan Smith was constantly puffing on a cigarette or a vape. OK so she was stressed out, but non smokers get stressed too, so it’s not an essential feature!

I cough when I vomit! Weird, loud barks that I have no control over. 😂
