Is it nearly time to not bother with heating?

Like everyone I’ve started to worry about heating costs, we are currently on a fixed tariff until Aug & pay a DD of £140 a month. I looked at our rates & yes they will double when the fixed term ends.

Looking at cutting back on our heating use, however I’ve attached a photo of our Hive schedule and I can’t see where we can cut back much more!

If we go with the easy “turn your thermostat down 1 degree” we would be on 17 degrees!

We both WFH full time now & have a 1 & 4 year old so I don’t want it too cold overnight.

Anyone else thinking the same?

Is it nearly time to not bother with heating?

Yes! We have turned the heat off in little used rooms and at night. Next the radiator settings in the sitting room and study will come down. But it then becomes hard to concentrate unless you are wearing a blanket! (Already layered up.)

daisypond · 07/02/2022 15:54

We don’t have heating on at all, day or night. We used to have it on morning and evening for about an hour. We WFH.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 07/02/2022 15:56

It certainly doesn't need to be on overnight. Use extra blankets if necessary.

actiongirl1978 · 07/02/2022 15:59

You don't need heating on at night, you're under a duvet!

Ours goes off at 8pm and back on at 5am.

HesterShaw1 · 07/02/2022 16:02

Mine's on for two hours in the morning, then from 5-10pm. It's bottled gas so is an expensive option. I don't know how warm it is, but I doubt it's more than 18/19 degrees

But you don't need it on at night. Colder bedrooms are better for sleep

SpaghettiArmsMurderer · 07/02/2022 16:03

I voted Yabu because we usually have our heating on 17 and it’s not like it’s Arctic

noworklifebalance · 07/02/2022 16:04

We like a warm house but never have the heating on overnight. Sorry but what a waste.
We use 2x duvets I tend to wear a light fleece jumper in bed over pjs (came with pjs)sometimes hot water bottle. Kids sometimes have a hot water bottle,. Husband sleeps in his boxers.

BooksAndHooks · 07/02/2022 16:06

Ours is always off overnight. Don’t need it when in bed. Ours is set to 17 now instead of 20 during the day.

noworklifebalance · 07/02/2022 16:06

Ours goes on at 5am, we get up at 6am. Goes off at 7.30, about 20min before we all leave the house. Back on at 2.30 and of at 8.30pm.
Our living area can be very cold so we have an electric heater we use when cold for a top up without having to turn the heat up for the whole house.

Hugasauras · 07/02/2022 16:06

Does it ever actually click on overnight? We have it set up similarly but it rarely drops that low for it to even go on during the night.

TheChosenTwo · 07/02/2022 16:07

I like a warm house and our heating thermostats are set to come on from 10pm-5pm if the temperature drops below 15 (I think). During the day it comes on it it drops below 21 if anyone is home.
But no, I definitely don’t purposely set the heating on overnight!

noworklifebalance · 07/02/2022 16:10

Ours is on a timer so it never comes on overnight, whatever the temp. unless we set the time for it to.

Brighteyedtriangle · 07/02/2022 16:12

Check your heating isnt coming on at night 14 is far too high and it will come on at some point.

I found this out by waking up with hot flushes at 2am. I started to worry i was starting menopause at 35 but then realised my heating was coming on in the night so i set it to 8 degrees overnight instead of 14

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 07/02/2022 16:12

Never on over night regardless of how cold it is. Not on during the day if I’m in on my own , goes on at 5pm before DH gets home from a mainly outside bass job. Goes off at 9pm. Also have a log fire so might not put heating on over the weekend when it is lit.

I dress in layers and don’t feel the cold anyway.

likeafishneedsabike · 07/02/2022 16:14

Thermo set to 16 degrees here. Far too chilly in my opinion but I refuse to pay these prices.
The only time I’ve ever put on the heating at night is when breastfeeding through the night!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 07/02/2022 16:16

An hour in the morning and two hours on the afternoon. Its actually been off since Saturday but it might go on again for a few days as the house is getting chilly.

Some houses are naturally warmer than others.

marqueses · 07/02/2022 16:18

I've never had the heating on overnight, it seems such a waste of resources and money when you can wear pyjamas and use blankets. Even when I was getting up to feed my children in the night I used a blanket.

Seems like a bit of an easy way to save costs

ihearttc · 07/02/2022 16:18

Ours only goes on if we need it on, always has done. As we physically go and switch it on and off according to whether we need it on or not.

I grew up in a house with only a small gas fire downstairs…I cannot breathe or sleep if it’s too hot. We have a 4 bed house and our DD for Gas and Electric is about £85 a month.

SpaghettiArmsMurderer · 07/02/2022 16:19

We don’t have it on at night either - the airing cupboard is in our bedroom and the boiler firing up would wake DP up if nothing else

fishonabicycle · 07/02/2022 16:22

I've never had heating on overnight. My son didn't die!

LGY1 · 07/02/2022 16:27

Looking at the graph it clicked on a bit last night to keep around 14 at 2am.

Irrational worry about littles one’s getting too cold (baby in a sleeping bag) but he is 18 months now & sleeps in fleece pj’s and sleeping bag.

Will turn off overnight & see how we go

Never had it on at night. The times I’ve accidentally left it on I’ve woken up with a stuffy nose. I think there’s at least another 6 weeks of cold weather ahead, if not 8.

TrashyPanda · 07/02/2022 16:32

Switch it off at night for starters. You really don’t need it on then.

Then set it to come on for an hour or so in the morning.
Then off until late afternoon/early evening, switching off about an hour before you go to bed.

Then you can put it on when you really need to, rather than having it on all the time.

It’s bitter here today, but I managed until 2 pm before putting the heating on.

A heated airer is a great way to heat the room as well as drying clothes.

Snoken · 07/02/2022 16:32

If you are in the UK you need the heating on, otherwise you will end up with a damp and mouldy house. That is an actual concern when you have small children. However, during the night would the time you turn it down to 16-17 degrees or so, and then focus on keeping the house warmer during the day.

AlternativePerspective · 07/02/2022 16:34

I switch mine on as I need it as I have one of those remote heating controllers.

Have never ever had it on overnight,no-one needs heating on overnight, you have layers/duvets/hot water bottles if need be, but heating actually dries out the atmosphere which is supremely unhealthy before you even get to the cost.

I’m on blood thinners so feel the cold a bit more acutely, so I have a hot water bottle plus have just bought a thicker duvet, but I still sleep with the window open.

I’ve just bought a convection heater for the living room which will warm up the room in 20 minutes without me having to heat the whole house, so now the heating goes on for maybe an hour in the morning.
