Is it nearly time to not bother with heating?

Like everyone I’ve started to worry about heating costs, we are currently on a fixed tariff until Aug & pay a DD of £140 a month. I looked at our rates & yes they will double when the fixed term ends.

Looking at cutting back on our heating use, however I’ve attached a photo of our Hive schedule and I can’t see where we can cut back much more!

If we go with the easy “turn your thermostat down 1 degree” we would be on 17 degrees!

We both WFH full time now & have a 1 & 4 year old so I don’t want it too cold overnight.

Anyone else thinking the same?

God I would freeze in your house! I don't know what we are going to do, but I can't sit and work in less than 21 degrees. 17 would be literally shivering.

My house is 1930s. We currently have very little money coming in. Just DP and me and no children

No heating on over night, it gets down to about 12 degrees. Once or twice a day I'll get a room up to 17 or 18 degrees and I rotate what other radiators come on with it, in order to look after the fabric of the house.

Yesterday we spent most of the day at the library and last night we went out to the gym. I think I had the heating on for about 30 minutes when I brought the laundry in from the line.

Those of you who don't have heating on at night.. do you get condensation all over your bedroom windows?

We sleep under three duvets and have a window or two open. We used to get condensation and I would Karcher it up in the morning. I don't know where the condensation has gone, the new double-glazing I guess.

ours is now off until the winter. It's usually set at 17 degrees and comes on 5am-6am (we are all out of the House by 630am) and on at 4pm-530pm. I think its different for us as we are a household of adults.

It must suck for you to go outside since 17 is the average temperature in July & August…

I got a gas filled rad with a thermostat for youngest's freezing above garage bedroom, and use it when I'm WFH.

Leftbutcameback · 08/02/2022 09:08

Ours would be on overnight if I could set the thermostat to 14, but as I can’t it isn’t! It doesn’t often get that low but maybe two night a year it would click on.

Otherwise it’s 19 or 19.5 (to get to 19.2) and on all day now I wfh. I’ve found having it on all day makes very little difference in cost to when it was just on for a few hours AM and PM. I’m lucky that I can afford it, and I hate to be cold so will cut down on other spending (clothes etc) before I cut down on heating.

The wind direction makes a big difference to how cold our semi detached house is. Also we have a conservatory and even on a winter day where it’s sunny this warms up the whole house.

Leftbutcameback · 08/02/2022 09:10

The other thing I find keeps me warm at night is a teddy bear mattress topper (Dunelm). I’m always warm now, even with a 10tog rather than 14tog duvet

I would love to get cavity wall insulation but really struggled to get anyone good to fit it (we also need quite a bit of remedial work done on the mortar). I didn’t want to use the govt scheme because I’d heard such bad things, found an installer with a good reputation, happy to pay for it but they said they weren’t doing it anymore. Then there are lots of stories about it causing damp and mould. It’s hard to know what they right thing is to do.

Grandville · 08/02/2022 13:22

This is mine and its fine. I wfh and shift the morning heating two hours earlier if I have to go into the office. Work with layers and a blanket for my lap. Always blankets on the sofa. It can get too warm for me if I'm doing housework while the heating is on.

Heatings costs have been disgusting recently, it just isn't worth it to try and heat a house!

After investing in lots of blankets, my partner and I decided to go one step further and get some blinds - curtains just weren't cutting it and we didn't really like the look.

We went to Appeal Shading Appeal Shading and they helped us all through the process. We've got some really smart automatic blinds that we can use all through the year, and they seem to be great at keeping the heat in so far too.

@Cookerhood I wonder why ours is different. No fair!

@Cookerhood Actually I’ve just worked out I can go back through the days using the arrows, but can’t press the W or Y at the top, but there is tons of info in there!
