New kitchen for under 10k

AIBU to think we can get a new kitchen for under 10k

We’ve got a small/med kitchen. 8 cupboards and 5 drawers.
We don’t want anything fancy- laminate worktops, new cupboards, tiles, new sink, new extracter fan.

Everyone on Mumsnet seem to spend over 20k on their kitchens.

I’m too nervous to book an appointment as I don’t want to look stupid as we’ve got 8k-10k to spend

Following...I would love to knock through our kitchen to the dining room and put in a new kitchen (don't need new applicances) hoped it would be possible for 15k... 🤔

Shmithecat2 · 06/02/2022 20:43

Does your budget include appliances? I think it's totally doable!

SailingBuddy · 06/02/2022 20:44

Our kitchen from IKEA was less than 10k and it was brilliant. Really good quality IMO

JorisBonson · 06/02/2022 20:45

We have a tiny kitchen and it was £3.5k from IKEA, including appliances.

Aliensrus · 06/02/2022 20:46

Definitely do-able, we got ikea units but found a company to make doors and spray them in a colour we liked. Bought Neff appliances from a discount retailer online. You have to put a bit more work in (in terms of research and planning) though.

DockOTheBay · 06/02/2022 20:46

Build it yourself. We did an ikea kitchen for about £2000 although we didn't have to buy any new appliances - worktop, sink, units, wall cupboards, extractor fan, paint and flooring.

Shmithecat2 · 06/02/2022 20:46

Have a look at DIY Kitchens.

Bibbitybobbityboo86 · 06/02/2022 20:47

We’d need all appliances except a dishwasher

Ok that gives me hope

My husband can’t install a shelf so we’d need to pay someone to fit it

All the kitchen websites are just so intimidating. All kitchens are huge with islands- just worried they won’t be interested in doing small kitchens

When we've had kitchens done bulk of cost has been flooring, new appliances and any building work. A like for like, no building work, no walls down or windows replaced I'd be surprised if you couldn't get a new kitchen for c£8k. Obviously there are price variations for trades depending where you are geographically (London/ SW England typically more expensive than rest of UK). Get a few quotes from various places and see where they're coming out at

Butteredtoast55 · 06/02/2022 20:48

Look at DIY kitchens. They're amazing. Get the best oven you can if you cook a lot ( I don't mean Megabucks, just a good quality one that can be repaired) and look for bargains fir your other appliances. Definitely doable.

Forgetaboutme · 06/02/2022 20:51

Sounds doable to me. Our kitchen was 6. 5k a few years ago, similar size. I'd look online on social media for local joiners, particularly those who specialise in kitchens. That will be cheaper than using a big firm (assuming you need someone to build it).

Twinkleylight · 06/02/2022 20:54

Ours was 6k from Howdens and we have a small kitchen, this was in 2019. Brilliant kitchen and really good quality and very good customer service.

Kfjsjdbd · 06/02/2022 20:59

A friend just installed a beautiful Howdens kitchen for £9k

thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 06/02/2022 21:01

We used DIY kitchens. That with a washer/dryer and microwave built in was about 7.5k. A Range oven was a grand and American fridge freezer £500

nonevernotever · 06/02/2022 21:01

I reckon you could. ours was £15k from IKEA, just before the start of the pandemic, but that included swapping the old kitchen and our bedroom, all installation, ripping out the old kitchen, replastering that room completely and doing the floor, moving the washing machine into the bathroom and rewiring and replumbing everything, a new range cooker and new wardrobes for the bedroom. We have 7 double cupboards,2 corner cupboards, and 5 single cupboard s of which 2bare sets of drawers.

nonevernotever · 06/02/2022 21:04

Oh and new flooring in the kitchen too, a new cooker hood to go with the cooker and a new handbasin in the bathroom to make room for the washing machine. The fitter that IKEA recommended was superb, and coordinated all the other trades. It took two weeks from Start to finish and we love it .

TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 06/02/2022 21:11

We got ours from eBay - check out exdisplay kitchens

BathroomBuffalo · 06/02/2022 21:16

We got our kitchen from IKEA. It's a medium sized U-shaped kitchen, and we bought a double oven, induction hob and a dishwasher, and got it fitted, for under £8k. Love IKEA kitchens. They are harder to fit than many as they don't have a service void at the back of the cabinets, but that means you get more space!

Thewindwhispers · 06/02/2022 21:24

We got one last year. Large kitchen, high spec.
£5200 cupboards etc from DIY Kitchens
£500 wood worktop
£1800 to install it all from local carpenter.
£2k American fridge-freezer from discount appliancesnonline.
Plus ovens hob sink taps and washer/dryer, mostly from heating &plumbing .com or ao.com.

Do NOT buy from one of the specialist kitchen places is my advice to you, they have to add to your bill all the time wasted on customers who don’t buy. If you source it all yourself you save a lot.

nokidshere · 06/02/2022 21:28

My kitchen - 5 floor to ceiling units, 7 drawers, corner unit, 3 pull out spice/jar units, worktops, tap & sink, hob unit, sink unit, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, microwave, double oven, grill, hob, extractor fan cost £5600 from B&Q.

I paid a local builder £3.5k to strip out the old kitchen and remove, knock down utility room wall, make good and decorate, all, plumbing and lighting. Oh and marble windowsills.

So a total of £9100 for everything.

TolkiensFallow · 06/02/2022 21:35

We just had a wickes kitchen. Small but lots of cupboards etc. 4.5k for units and decent worktop (solid surface) and then 1.2k for appliances online (Bosch/hotpoint etc) so yes.
Bnq will do you a design in store if you go in with your measurements and they display their doors by “8 cupboards cost x”

Merryoldgoat · 06/02/2022 21:38

DIY-kitchens.com

The units are great, come assembled, they give you help planning and it’s WAY cheaper than magnet et al.

I got a bigger kitchen than you describe for £2.5k.

I forgot to say this. Our local B & Q were fab, we went in and they made an initial design then we tweaked it over a couple of months till it was right. They were helpful, knowledgable and friendly. They knew we weren't using their fitting service but were still fab.

MilsDogMom · 06/02/2022 21:42

Definitely can! We got one last year from Homebase (do not recommend) and it’s a big kitchen area with oven, dishwasher, sink etc. literally everything new and it was around 9k.

Find a private kitchen fitter to save the most money. Heard great things about DIY kitchens but we were too scared that we’d mess it up. But your appliances separate if you can not from the companies. Save £££ wherever you can x

MazzleDazzle · 06/02/2022 21:45

I got a kitchen from Howden’s for just under £10K inc. appliances, solid wood (painted) doors and quartz worktop (L shape, not very big - I’d guess three metres total).

  • howden’s own brand integrated dishwasher & fridge freezer
  • 2 x neff hide & slide ovens
  • neff 4 burner induction hob
  • extractor
  • 2 x deep pan drawers
  • I pull out tower storage
  • 1 x corner cupboard & spiny shelf thing
  • 3 x top cupboard (inc. corner)
  • boiling water tap
