Sorry to post here. Worried about DS

My DS two has had a cold for a little while now.

He has a wet cough at the moment. It's occasional, not constant. He's had a negative covid test.

He's fine in himself, but just sounds really congested and mucusy also when he talks and in general.

Since last night, I've noticed when he drinks water or milk he chokes on it a lot and it makes him cough a lot.

Does anyone know what this is about ? Usually when you have a cough as an adult, taking a drink makes it better. But in his case, it makes it worse ?? Maybe he's got lots of mucus and it becomes overwhelming ?

He's also drooling a lot !

Sorry to hear about your little boy. I've got COVID at the moment which is presenting as a head cold and it's hard to drink when your nose is blocked. Also everything is making me cough, including drinks. Obviously your little one doesnt have COVID but lots of viruses have similar symptoms.

Things you could try to help are nasal drops, steam (sit in the bathroom and put the shower on, or put him in a hot bath), olbas oil or snufflebabe and a humidifier in the bedroom. And do speak to a doctor or 111 if you are worried.

Porcupineintherough · 05/02/2022 20:37

Sorry just reread. You say he's drooling. Could be teething but can he actually swallow? Very swollen tonsils can cause this problem in which case he really needs to be seen by a doctor.

pregnantmummy22 · 05/02/2022 20:38

Sorry to hear you have covid ! I hope you feel better soon and thanks so much for your kind words.

I suppose I haven't had a really mucusy cough and cold for ages, so I just forget what that's like.

But you're right, perhaps it's just irritating him to drink etc.

I went to the doc last week and also called again on Friday. I'm not concerned about his general demeanour at all, he's as cheeky as ever, but the weird choking freaked me out.

I'll definitely sleep near him and keep a close eye on him.

Get well soon !

He's been drooling so much all week. I've not seen him drool this much since he was 4 months old.

He was seen by a doc last Friday, but she didn't look inside his mouth- that was last Friday - not yesterday.

I called her yesterday to say he wasn't really better and was getting worse and she just said it sounds like he's caught another cold. Perhaps it is the tonsils, but he doesn't seem to be in pain. Surely if they were that swollen, he would be an absolute state and also have a temperature. Maybe that's too come Sad

OP posts:
Porcupineintherough · 05/02/2022 20:45

Yes I would expect him to have a temperature and be utterly miserable and off his food if it was tonsillitis, so if he isnt then I'd be reassured. That said, if I was concerned about swallowing/choking I'd want a doctor to actually look in his mouth.

shouldistop · 05/02/2022 20:47

Tonsils I think

curcurbita · 05/02/2022 20:49

If he is having trouble swallowing it is worth getting him seen urgently; there's a possibility it could be epiglottitis www.nhs.uk/conditions/epiglottitis/

Oh that's worrying. He doesn't have many of those symptoms. But I can call 111, just to make sure.

OP posts:
curcurbita · 05/02/2022 20:54

Yes I didn't want to frighten you but a call to 111 probably worth it

Well he was really coughing and choking through his Milk bitte this evening and I didn't like it one bit. Every time he's drunk water he's done the same and also spat some of it out...

Sounds like a call might be a good idea OP. Do you have access to transport? We had a couple of late night jaunts across town to out of hours GPS when mine were small.

LittleOwl153 · 05/02/2022 21:04

I find drinking milk when I have a cold/cough makes me cough alot more... same with ds8. Not sure that's much help with a baby... but thought I'd mention!

I just called and they said I'll get a call within 24 hours. I'll keep an eye on him all night. He seems absolutely fine when he's not drinking, so hopefully it's just a lot of mucus. But I'll definitely get some more advice on it and watch him like a hawk tonight !

Sounds like he's choking now every time he coughs. Like he's just drowning in mucus..

He didn't have those problems at that time, in the docs defence. It started after.

I think I've worked it out. I think it's whooping cough. Not sure what to do.

Can you get steam in the room? Wet washing hanging up to dry? Bowls of water on the window ledge etc

pregnantmummy22 · 05/02/2022 22:40

I just watched a video of a boy who has it and that's what's happening here. Not sure what to do.

I've got a humidifier on with olbas oil?

I've also propped him up on pillows. He was waking up coughing and whooping and sounding like he was struggling to breathe because of all the mucus. Is asleep again now. Ribs were not pulling in. But it just seemed hard for him to catch his breath during / straight after the fits.

Have you done another Covid test OP ? As in John Campbell’s Youtube video a week ago he was chatting to a Dr about the situation in Israel and he was saying how many of his patients are presenting like your son , and that he has been testing for Whooping Cough just in case but it has been Covid.

I haven't. But I'm not sure how that changes things right now ?

Oh I hope you are wrong, I had whooping cough a few years ago (grand old age of 45) and it was horrid. If that's what you suspect then do get him to a doctor tomorrow. It can be treated with antibiotics if they catch it early enough (I didnt get diagnosed for weeks and weeks and then it was too late).

For now yes prop his mattress up and get some steam in there. And YY do another COVID test if you have one. The cough is similar in that anything that irritates the throat sets it off. Poor little one, hope you find put what's going on soon. X Sad

Thank you ! I had whooping cough when I was 11. I remember it well, I used to vomit after the fits sometimes. It was not nice. But scarier in a two year old. We've only got over croup a few weeks ago ! Sad
