AIBU TO WONDER HOW IN GOD'S NAME PEOPLE WILL BE ABLE TO AFFORD THE INRESE IN ENERGY PRICES

OK this obviously won't affect those who are lucky enough to have money - but - how are those on low incomes/benefit, poor pensioners, etc. ever going to possibly be able to afford the energy price increases? Also the increases will have a knock-on price increase effect on everything we buy - food, clothes ...... I am concerned.

Who are the twunts who voted that you were being unreasonable?

Clavinova · 05/02/2022 19:38

dontcallmelen

Apart from 19.25/19.26 this evening (and now of course) - I haven't posted since Thursday lunchtime.

Jojobees · 05/02/2022 19:38

I am genuinely afraid. I don’t know how to cut costs any more than I already do.
I think it will be electricity only on Monday/wed/fri.
I worked my arse off for the NHS during COVID, and will be living in massive poverty.
How is this right?

Whosthebestbabainalltheworld · 05/02/2022 19:39

Ah the beauty of privatisation. EDF in France expected to absorb a significant wedge of this cost increase. State owned and instructed to get in with it. If only the UK……

Whattochoosenow · 05/02/2022 19:39

It’s worth remembering that the fixed rate is the price per KWh, not how much you pay per month. The amount they say you need to pay each month is only an estimate of usage so it’s worth submitting a reading every single month to keep you right.
Make sure you look at the cost per KWh and daily standing charge before signing up.

Woahthehorsey · 05/02/2022 19:40

Our last 3 bills have been £408, £395 and today's - £510. The same period last year was £250, £238 & £253.

Currently sat here freezing because we just can't afford it.

Suzi888 · 05/02/2022 19:41

Standards of living will drop, holidays, meals, treats, clothes, (or you turn your heating off). Literally get a onesie on /stay in bed- some people may not have any choice- so I’m not being goady.

NI and interest rates going up- we are paying for covid. We will pay for years to come.

“I think it's going to be truly hideous. I'm on state pension and have another tiny pension - but it takes me just over the limit to qualify for ANY benefits.” - along with people who work full time who are NMW or close to it.
People that have taken on mortgages who then have relationship breakdowns/ want children/get sick/are single. People on low incomes who do not benefits will be in a sore situation. Claiming benefits does open doors to other pots of money /one off payments from councils, winter fuel payments, discretionary housing payments, assistance generally… free school meals, uniform grants (yes it may not be much but it’s bloody something). There are vast swathes of people that will work their arse off and get bugger all.

I work in housing and the situation is bloody dire.

Even for some people who cut back on usage or keep it approximately the same year on year, if the cost per unit and the daily standing charge go up too much it can outstrip how much people can afford to pay. Why should ordinary families be put in a position of prioritising which bill they pay first or whether it's more important to go without food? Fucking disgusting.
LolaStrange · 05/02/2022 19:43

How are people finding out what their bills will be? My fixed tarriff with octopus ends in march. The app says they will automatically put me onto the gov cap price, can't see a figure, and how do I work out my future bills?

Whattochoosenow · 05/02/2022 19:47

@LolaStrange you need to find out what price per KWHh they will be charging you and the daily standing charge. Then look at how many KWh you use per month and work it from there

FourTeaFallOut · 05/02/2022 19:47

From Mse:

Under the new cap, the rates on average (it varies by region) are about 7p/kWh for gas, with a standing charge of 27p per day. For electricity, it's about 28p/kWh, with a standing charge of 45p per day.

My fixed tariff with octopus ends in march too.

Then sent me an email with the options for if I choose to fix for 12months with them or do nothing and stay on standard variable tariff. With a price given for the standing charges and the cost per kW for gas and electricity.

You can also log into their app and see what fixed deals they have but they are extortionate. I'm choosing to do nothing when my fix ends.

FourTeaFallOut · 05/02/2022 19:48

And then you need to know your usage. Find your most recent bill and it should give you your annual use for gas and electricity.
December 2021
The average cost of household fuel bills in France has risen by €64 per month from December 2020 to October 2021, a new official study shows...

Sorry - wrong link -
www.connexionfrance.com/French-news/Household-bills-soar-by-64-a-month-in-a-year-new-French-study-shows
You should maybe read the article before quoting the €64 per month - it doesn't say that at all. Gas increase is quoted as €10-€15 between Nover 2019 and October 2020. Electricity is quoted as 2.6% higher December 2020 - October 2021.

Also "The lowest-income households saw a monthly increase in their gas bill that was three times lower than that of the richest – €9 compared to €26."

FatFredsFriedEgg · 05/02/2022 19:51

@Rabblesthecat

Pah!

It is what it is…….

Just about to buy car number 3

What a fucking charmer you are.

Twat.

Just to add. We should have a windfall tax without a doubt. This government have lined their and their pal's pockets for years. The money they chucked to their mates during Covid is a joke. Sunak's family are richer than the Queen. I honestly feel I am in an alternate reality, like a bad sci-fi film. I'm not sure people in this country can stand a lot more of this. Something has got to give.

A disgrace, talk about 'I'm alright Jack'.

mogsrus · 05/02/2022 19:53

Thousands of people should stand at the door & say “ can’t pay this “ I wonder what would happen.

GetAlongWithTheVoices · 05/02/2022 19:53

Our bill rose this month from £80 to £150 because our fixed rate ended. I'm already sitting in the dark when I'm on my own and I have the heating off all day when the kids aren't in. My littlest told me today I'm "making them suffer" as I didn't put the heating on this morning until midday 😭

I am so scared about it going up again. I don't know what we're going to do

Okay thank you. I am currently in 16.8p/2.9p so I will compare with those figures, thank you.

I did get an email from octopus but it was more of a blog post from the CEO about the crisis.

Thanks

cakeorwine · 05/02/2022 19:55

I've just done a complex spreadsheet looking at the what I think we use over a year, but on a monthly estimate - so I have estimated this years monthly usage and linked in my current price cap costs and the new ones in April. Plus an estimate for what October's costs might be.

It's affordable - but I definitely go into work rather than WFH to keep daily costs down.

I feel for people who are at home everyday on a low income.

WomblingWilma · 05/02/2022 19:56

We’re on a fixed rate until the end of August of £168 a month for gas and electric. Had a look yesterday to see if it’s worth changing to a new fixed tariff now before April. Cheapest is £362 a month!

I’m thankful 3 of my DC are adults with their own money, contributing to the household and no longer a drain, and I’ve recently gone back to work or we’d be stuffed! Feel desperately sorry for families with younger DC already struggling with massive mortgages/rents, high childcare fees and now this.

Wow....Hope you keep it

Suzi888 · 05/02/2022 19:56

The posters with the energy bill /costing knowledge need to start a new thread. I know bugger all about it- but it could prove invaluable to some people.

Is the price cap going up again in October?

Yes, the door of number 10 Downing Street, would be good.
