AIBU TO WONDER HOW IN GOD'S NAME PEOPLE WILL BE ABLE TO AFFORD THE INRESE IN ENERGY PRICES

OK this obviously won't affect those who are lucky enough to have money - but - how are those on low incomes/benefit, poor pensioners, etc. ever going to possibly be able to afford the energy price increases? Also the increases will have a knock-on price increase effect on everything we buy - food, clothes ...... I am concerned.

Diamondsareforever123 1822.

I think you're figures are a bit off if you read this article in the Guardian.

@JustAnotherPoster00
And I saw a newspaper article today Blaming anti- vaxxers for the return of scurvy.. you can't make this shit up..
good luck xx

marktayloruk · 06/02/2022 18:44

As a person I don't know how my fellow people will pay. The government should keep the increases down even if it does mean taxing people who can afford it.

Dreamstate · 06/02/2022 18:44

Stop blaming it solely on the Tories.

Legally binding targets for cutting UK greenhouse emissions were set by Ed Miliband in the 2008 Climate Change Act when he was Energy Secretary

Labour started this and parties since then have had to continue on with meeting these legally binded targets.

You can blame Labour for all your green levies!

Just look st the investment needed to have viable renewable sources. Someone has to pay for it. Unfortunately renewable sources alone aren't enough! Absolutely ridiculous esp when as a country we only co tirvue 2% of carbon emissions worldwide with many other countries in double digits like 30%.

We are in this situation because we have a legally binding agenda to reach net zero emissions. That meant shutting down coal stations, not going ahead with fracking or making use of all the shale gas and oil we have. So we are left with heavily relying on importing alot of it and now held hostage by another country which is why costs have gone up. Its affected alot of Europe too.

So thank you Labour, Ed Milliband who suddenly has amnesia about what he did and bow demanding the green levies to be stopped...well its your fault you idiot. Funny how they forget

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 06/02/2022 18:52

We should be cutting greenhouse gases though.

What we shouldn’t be doing is letting Shell have massive profits whilst people can’t afford to heat there homes.

It’s a disgraceful

ThistleTits · 06/02/2022 18:55

@Gardeningcreature

We should not have to live like this that is the entire point. Both dh and I work full time. I absolutely should not have to tolerate this shit. I didn’t vote for it. I’ll say it again. You will get the ‘Let’s blame X lazy bastards, they shouldn’t live in a house with central heating/feed their children/own a pair of shoes/own a car/have a phone etc etc etc When will people wake the fuck up. This government have spent BILLIONS on their mates and giving tax payers money to their mates. They do not give one fuck about anyone who has to actually work for a living. If you have had the privilege of attending a private school which cost £23,500 PER YEAR per child plus over £1000 for a uniform, you have no idea, repeat no idea what it will mean to go out to work to earn a living. The thought that some people will not be able to give their children a hot meal or bath them due to the sheer expense is incomprehensible to entitled (usually white middle class males) who are in power. You may as well talk in Chinese for all the comprehension they will have.
I could not agree more. Unfortunately, we have an electorate who believe they have more in common with the elite, than they do with their next door neighbour.

Was it Ed Miliband who removed the subsidy that would have allowed the site responsible for over 70% of the UK's gas storage to stay operational? No, that decision was taken in 2013 under a Conservative government.

It's been 14 years since 2008 and the Conservatives have been in power for 12 of them. There was nothing preventing them from changing the rules if they felt that the rules could potentially cause a supply problem. Or, heavens forbid, they could have put a bit more effort into complying with the rules, rather than dismissing it as "all the green crap".

ClaudineClare · 06/02/2022 19:07

Christ, people still find ways to blame Labour for the mess we are in.

The Tories have had over a decade to reverse anything they felt wasn't beneficial to the ordinary person on the street.

They haven't done that because the Tories don't give a shiny shite about ordinary people.

What part of Ed Millibands policy that is legally binding do you not understand? Anyone in powerr after that is legally obliged to make sure its followed through.

That is why the Tories did that about the gas storage because the legally binding targets have to be met.

Bit like brexit its legally binding now.

If they want to chnage it then it has to be voted on by Parliament by all parties. So if the Tories tried to remove it itd be voted down because Labour wouldn't want to get rid of it, nor would the green party or the liberals who champion the green agenda.

God some of you need to learn how politics works.

Its not so simple as well they could of got rid of it fuck me if you can't even understand that things have to go through a vote in Parliament then no wonder we are where we are.

There's this place called Parliament - perhaps you've heard of it? They have this little-known power called 'legislation', which means they can reverse any previous law, and indeed create any new law they like, if they can just summon up enough votes to do so.

If only there had been some means by which the present government could have altered a law passed fourteen years ago, if they disagreed with it.

Dreamstate you talk as though the Tories don't have a majority. Johnson has a massive majority. Cameron had a small majority in 2015.

Boris does whatever he wants. If he doesn’t want to put it to parliament he wouldn’t. We are talking about someone who prorogued Parliament after all. Never mind the endless parties.

beautifuldaytosavelives · 06/02/2022 19:17

In the last 10 years I've had an £8k pay cut due to two redundancies. DH also had a couple of thousand drop due to redundancy. We look ok from the outside, nice house, both working, but there's not a spare penny for these rocketing bills. Professional, post-grad qualifications working a non-professional job because the job market is a disaster, panicked about rising cost of everything. It makes you wonder what you bother for.

LaDamaDeElche · 06/02/2022 19:18

People will probably have to go without. When I moved to Spain I was very shocked at how much the electricity bills were - more than double what I was paying in the U.K. People generally earn much less here too, so it's a massive struggle for people. What I do notice here is that people are really careful about what they use. The houses are freezing in winter, but rather than turn the heaters (don't have central heating in the area I live) people wear dressing gowns over clothes and use lots of blankets. People turn the lights off and don't use any unnecessary electricity to keep it as low as possible. Even doing all that that bills are around 90€ per month for a small flat. It's a massive problem all over Europe at the moment.

FatFredsFriedEgg · 06/02/2022 19:22

Oh dear @Dreamstate, you really do look quite foolish.

God some of you need to learn how politics works.

Indeed.

It is scary.

Ours has already crept up an extra £100. It's frightening. We both earn a reasonable amount but have a lot of outgoings. It's going to hit us hard and it scares me how tight things will be.

You also don't seem to understand that even with a majority you still need enough Tories to vote a majority!!! And its not always the case all Tories toe the line.
Idontliketuesdays · 06/02/2022 19:35

So basically it would be cheaper now to go out and get a take away pizza or baked potato than to make it from scratch and cook it in the oven at home?

mylifestory · 06/02/2022 19:37

@PickledOnionSandwich

We’ve been fairly fortunate this time around, £101 for electric only and £45 for a heat pump for the water. However, we’ve decided to overpay into our British Gas account by £25 pcm and then when I get my work from home allowance quarterly (£84), I’m also going to overpay that. We’re hoping that by doing this, when they increase the cap again it will soften the blow a bit. Luckily, we can afford to do this but I appreciate that plenty of others can’t.
How do you over pay british gas??? I didnt know that was a thing & Im definitely going to do it!
FancySomeChips · 06/02/2022 19:38

@ClaudineClare thank you, but I don’t understand it!

pcl09 · 06/02/2022 19:39

I’m confused by the concept of the government bearing the brunt of the cost increases. It’s just building up more debt that we all have to pay off! There is no magic pot of money so either we all pay it to the energy companies at this point or we’ll all have to pay it in taxes at some point in the future, plus the interest for the government borrowing that money and a huge bill for the inefficiency of administering it.
