AIBU TO WONDER HOW IN GOD'S NAME PEOPLE WILL BE ABLE TO AFFORD THE INRESE IN ENERGY PRICES

OK this obviously won't affect those who are lucky enough to have money - but - how are those on low incomes/benefit, poor pensioners, etc. ever going to possibly be able to afford the energy price increases? Also the increases will have a knock-on price increase effect on everything we buy - food, clothes ...... I am concerned.

The tories are in because of brexit. I hope all brexit / Tory voters are happy because this is the ultimate reap what you sow.

I only feel sorry for the rest of us caught up in their xenophobic shit show. Will there be any soul searching? I doubt it.

It’s grim. We’re lucky enough to be able to absorb costs and keep heating on, but the money that we’ll be spending on that is what we’d spend on the more fun things like cafe trips or holidays. Realise this is a massively privileged position, but I can’t help thinking a lot of people will be in this position and the knock on impact to local cafes etc is going to be huge. Especially as they’ll be struggling with price rises as well, and still getting over COVID closures. The country is in for a tough few years.

Thoroughly recommend the documentary ‘The Decade the Rich Won’ someone else mentioned above.

The uk is a very well off country. Many people will be mildly annoyed but it won’t have a big impact on them. Those affected severely will be very small in number. Went for a family meal last week and had to give up as three restaurants were packed and no tables. I said to dh, I thought everyone was supposed to be skint? I am old enough to have been through a couple of recessions and this is how it is. Way better Thant he 80’s and 90’s atleast people actually have central heating and double glazing now.

Muminabun · 06/02/2022 09:35

For those lambasting the tories and their voters did you see labours manifesto of spending lots of magical money? Anyone remember the joke note of there being no money left. Where does this hilarious idea that Labour are fiscally competent come from?

SirChenjins · 06/02/2022 09:37

Many people will be mildly annoyed but it won’t have a big impact on them

Perhaps not on their individual energy bills, but it will have far reaching consequences at societal level.

@Pyriah

‘ We do have a dishwasher and I’m wondering about using that less’.

It’s cheaper to run a full dishwasher than it is to run the tap to heat 8-10 sink fulls of water to wash the same amount of dishes. Dishwashers are much more efficient because the water goes in cold and is heated via electric. The water in the tap is heated by gas so costs more. I think a lot of people may end up doing things like this that are a false economy.

Who use 8-10 sink-fulls to wash dishes? I think we use half a sinkful per meal. If you meant you only run the dishwasher once a week, how big is your dishwasher that you can fit in seven lots of pots and pans?

Also, electricity has in the past generally been five times as expensive as gas, and has never been cheaper than gas, what gave you the idea that electricity has ever been cheaper?

cakeorwine · 06/02/2022 09:39

Many people will be mildly annoyed but it won’t have a big impact on them

Do you know what percentage of people are currently in fuel poverty?

commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-8730/

So you see people going out to meals?

You haven't seen all those people who can't go out. That's survivor bias.

qualitygirl · 06/02/2022 09:41

Electricity Prices are rising here in Ireland also.

Although I feel like it's not as bad as we DONT have council tax or water bills.

I don't have gas either so my only bill (that I can't get rid of) is electricity.
I am fortunate enough to not have a mortgage/rent too so I can absorb the increases.

newstart1234 · 06/02/2022 09:44

That story about that note is like 12 years old and referred to a time during a global financial crisis. I don’t see how it’s still relevant to link it the Labour Party today Tbh

MyGlassKeepsLeaking · 06/02/2022 09:44

I read recently that the government is considering a "loan" for people who are struggling. The price increase on gas and electricity will affect most people, and it will mean more and more people will be in debt. I plan to cut down a bit on the electricity - I won't use the washer and drier so much. At one time, gas and electricity used to be cut off for people who hadn't paid their bills. That doesn't happen these days, thankfully.

It's not just the Conservatives who are taking the piss - all MPs, regardless of the party they represent, have been taking the piss for years.

Porcupineintherough · 06/02/2022 09:45

I also live in S Yorkshire. I really dont think coal fired power stations are the answer (they eouldnt provide cheap energy either, the coal wasnt cheap, that was kind of the point). The costs of this energy hike are as nothing compared to the costs that global warming is going to inflict on all of us, rich and poor alike, over the next few years. They cant be avoided but wtf would you want to make them worse?

Akire · 06/02/2022 09:49

The do technically cut you off though. I was annoyed at consumer rights show on radio saying they can’t cut you off. But they can put in a pre pay meter. Which is the same thing… YOU just cut yourself off when you run out of money. Not sure why the great distinction is allowed. It should be like water you get a trickle enough slowly fill a bowl or kettle but it’s never off. Millions face cutting themselves off for days at a time

8-10 sinkfuls of water? To wash dishes? I’d use less than half a bowl. Even if you mean over several days, that’d be more than one dishwasher use. But lots of things, like glasses, can easily be washed in cold water.

lollipoprainbow · 06/02/2022 09:52

Poll tax was scrapped because people rioted, People power won the day, that's what needs to happen. It's an absolute bloody disgrace.

I tend to agree with you, accounting with Diane Abbots magical mathematics could only end in bankruptcy for the country again.
It times like these that large gold reserves would be helpful. Oh, I forgot Gordon Brown sold that off to cover the government debts.

lollipoprainbow · 06/02/2022 09:57

Why do people think the government has anything to do with the rise in utilities price
s

True but they do have something to do with the ni increases which they should do away with while people are struggling to pay for energy.

SirChenjins · 06/02/2022 10:06

I’d use less than half a bowl

You’d use half a bowlful of water to wash the dishes and cooking pots & pans from the family meal? I don’t believe you - any more than I believe in the MN chicken.

The tories got voted in because they took a direct stance to follow the democratic vote and enact Brexit.
The two opposition parties decided otherwise and got spanked at the polls because of it.
Corbyn couldn't make his mind up and sat on the fence (Not a great trait for someone who wants to lead)
The Lib Dems under Jo Swinson decided to be undemocratic and ignore a previous democratic vote because she didn't agree with the result.
The opposition really left no choice for many to vote otherwise, Labour and Lib Dems only have themselves to blame for the political wilderness. The electorate won't support you if you disregard a democratic vote.

Pyriah · 06/02/2022 10:09

‘ Who use 8-10 sink-fulls to wash dishes? I think we use half a sinkful per meal.’

A typical dishwasher holds about 50 items. I run my dishwasher once every two days. If I washed up after every meal for two days I’d use 6-10 sinks of water. It’s well known that a dishwasher uses much less water and energy than washing the same amount of dishes by hand.

Akire · 06/02/2022 10:13

I think dishwasher is cheaper if you fill it capacity every single time and you don’t have a bowl water on the go to wash chopping boards, hands, wiping down counters and ovens and no dishes you need wash by hand. Granted then it might be but if it’s 2/3 full and you used half sink to prep as you go, soaked one baked tray or washed by hand then can’t be much in it.

SirChenjins · 06/02/2022 10:14

The tories got voted in because they took a direct stance to follow the democratic vote and enact Brexit

The Tories got in because they lied repeatedly about Brexit and managed to persuade enough people to believe their lies. A very clever and manipulative PR campaign.

ChickenStripper · 06/02/2022 10:14

I can't understand the "half a sinkful per meal thing". There's only two of us and we would not be able to manage cooking pots, utensils, chopping boards, plates, bowls etc in half a sinkful plus it's a proven fact by dishwasher manufacturers that modern dishwashers use less due to recycling of water in the process.

daisypond · 06/02/2022 10:17

There’s only two of us, though. And each cooked meal lasts for another meal, so no pots and pans for those. We just use plates and cutlery. Our dishwasher is only a slimline one. We haven’t space for a full-size one.
bevelino · 06/02/2022 10:17

@PenStation

So what would happen if there is mass non-payment? Which is probably going to happen.
I hope there will be demonstrations up and down the country. I don’t mean riots, but people need to rebel peacefully against the level of the increases to come.
cakeorwine · 06/02/2022 10:17

The Tories are in - and we are where we are.

I think they have forgotten the JAM ' The just about managing'

People not on the minimum wage, people who don't claim benefits, people who don't get support from the Government. I have never heard people like that mentioned. And that is a lot of people. People who are just getting by, but it doesn't take much to push them to the edge.

People who may own a home, or who may rent. Who don't have a lot of savings if any. People who are one expensive bill away from ruin.

People who survive payday to payday.
