To think that dog owners should take their dogs outside if they can't settle them?

All of the cafés around here allow dogs. I have no issue with this. Most are well behaved and sit quietly while their owners have their food and drink. They might move around a bit or get a bit excited about the sight of a new dog coming in, but they quickly settle down again. I am not talking about those dogs/dog owners, they are perfectly reasonable.

However, there seems to be a subset of dogs which cannot settle in a cafe. Not the dog's fault, I'm sure, but why on earth do the owners just sit there while their dogs disturb everyone else in the cafe with their constant high pitched yapping and whining? Are their owners so used to this behaviour that they just don't notice? Or do they simply not care that they are ruining the atmosphere for everyone else? If your pet isn't happy, why wouldn't you do something to make them more comfortable (and everyone else as well!)?

Oh look, another thread about dogs in cafes. We haven't discussed this for at least 3 days Hmm

AlexaShutUp · 05/02/2022 13:47

Well, I'm sorry, but I haven't seen any threads about this previously. We don't all check every thread before posting you know. Hmm

If you don't want to read it, just scroll on.

I assume that you're one of those irritating dog owners who allows their dogs to ruin everyone else's peace, and that you're therefore feeling defensive.

Because they don’t give a shit about you or anyone else enjoyment of using the cafe

Sundancerintherain · 05/02/2022 13:51

YANBU, this is why we sit outside with our ddog, he is large and can be excitable so we never take him inside as it would be unfair on other customers, staff or to br completely honest, us.

theremustonlybeone · 05/02/2022 13:51

Yep where I live dogs are welcome in nearly all cafes , shops etc. The yappers tend be begging for food. Owners seem to think because it’s dog friendly that means they can bark, yap, annoy others etc. I don’t use them as whilst I have a dog I have no interest sitting next a dog when I am eating etc.

SmolCat · 05/02/2022 13:56

If they’re training them to settle in cafes there might be a tiny bit of noise. But constant noise with no effort to do anything about it is obviously not acceptable.

No I'm not whatsoever, just sick of the same threads over and over again.

If you don't like comments calling you out on your boring thread then don't read them Grin

MatronicO6 · 05/02/2022 15:13

Why don't you take your own advice and not read, let alone comment on, threads you find boring.

HumunaHey · 05/02/2022 15:19

I don't like dogs in restaurants full stop. It's unsanitary and I hate the growing trend.

Just repeating the advice she gave me...

Someone's got to comment, it's a bit dead on here so clearly not many other people find it interesting either Wink

AlexaShutUp · 05/02/2022 15:35

@Natty13, funnily enough, I didn't start the thread for your entertainment, so it's neither here nor there to me if you find it boring.
There are tons of threads on here which I find boring, but I have better things to do than comment on them.

Your contribution to the threat is entirely optional, and you will not be missed if you choose not to grace us with your presence. I will continue to start/post on threads which are relevant to me.

Thanks for all of those who have commented. It's interesting that a lot of you are dog owners yourselves!

I totally get if you aren’t fond of dogs and don’t want them in these spaces, but how is it unsanitary? Unless the dog is in the kitchen prepping your food, what impact does it have to the sanitary nature of your food and drink?

My dog sleeps in my kitchen.
Hownowhappycow · 05/02/2022 15:44

Yes they should, and so should parents with their children if they won’t settle either. Nobody wants to hear yapping dogs/screaming babies while enjoying lunch out

Blanketpolicy · 05/02/2022 15:52

I'm not keep on dogs in cafes, I wouldn't take ours in, but I can live with it if done properly. Cafes should make it clear that only clean well behaved dogs are welcome. Owners should properly train their dogs to settle beneath them/the table and stay put if they want to take them into cafes. If they bark the staff should ask the dog owners to keep them settled or leave.

Any dogs with problems with smelly wind should be asked to leave immediately (although it will be difficult to identify the culprit if multiple dogs are in!) They should also be kept on the floor at all times, no jumping up.

Their fur shedding, their saliva, jumping up on tables, leftover faeces from pooing left on their bums. There's plenty of room for cross contaminationand much more I could mention. It's just as bad to have them where food is being eaten as it is where it's prepared.

I don't mind dogs but I don't like them in restaurants.

lisaandalan · 05/02/2022 16:09

Actually a lot of dogs are cleaner than some people.

Oh 🤮, to think some people have dogs in their bed

Brigante9 · 05/02/2022 17:13

How are you meant to train a dog (or child) to behave without putting them in the situation, tho? We’d never taken our dog into a pub before until last summer, because his brother wasn’t great with other dogs/people. Once he’d died, we took the remaining dog on holiday and he obviously couldn’t stay in the Airbnb alone. I was delighted the took to it like a duck to water apart from one pub where he could see the river and was keen to swim!

Now we have 2 puppies too, so no more pub visits with dogs. Maybe when they’re older.

Hyenaormeercat · 05/02/2022 17:23

I prefer to sit outside with my large excitable girl but even she will lay down by my feet. We went to pubs/cafes last year on holiday and it was commented on how good she was.
Yes, yappy/barky dogs should be taken outside if they won't pipe down.

I'll see you 'yappy dog and raise you running/shouting children ;)

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 05/02/2022 17:26

YANBU.

We take our dog into cafés and restaurants but he's been coming out with us since he was a puppy and is well used to just lying under the table - we tie him to a table leg so he can't wander but he can get up, stretch and move position if he wants.

If your dog can't behave, sit outside, get takeaway or leave them at home!

I get what you mean, but in those circumstances you ideally need two people so someone can take the offending dog (or child Grin) outside.

Of course getting a dog/DC used to being in cafês etc. requires training but training doesn't mean you just let them cause a nuisance in the meantime.

Agreed! Children are more likely to infect other humans with their fingers up their noses and coughing and sneezing everywhere . Hardly any canine diseases in UK are zoonotic.

A housetrained, well groomed dog, who is routinely treated for external and internal parasites is likely cleaner than the average 3/4 yr old.

vodkaredbullgirl · 05/02/2022 17:31

Groundhog day.

Littlehouseonthefairy · 05/02/2022 17:50

Why would they do this?
Training the dog. Getting them used to cafes.
They have already bought and paid for their meals so are eating quickly so they can leave but can't afford to buy lunch twice.
