To think that dog owners should take their dogs outside if they can't settle them?

All of the cafés around here allow dogs. I have no issue with this. Most are well behaved and sit quietly while their owners have their food and drink. They might move around a bit or get a bit excited about the sight of a new dog coming in, but they quickly settle down again. I am not talking about those dogs/dog owners, they are perfectly reasonable.

However, there seems to be a subset of dogs which cannot settle in a cafe. Not the dog's fault, I'm sure, but why on earth do the owners just sit there while their dogs disturb everyone else in the cafe with their constant high pitched yapping and whining? Are their owners so used to this behaviour that they just don't notice? Or do they simply not care that they are ruining the atmosphere for everyone else? If your pet isn't happy, why wouldn't you do something to make them more comfortable (and everyone else as well!)?

I love dogs in cafes. I love kids in cafes.
If either is noisy or disruptive for any lengthe of time though they need to be made to stop or leave.

I don't understand why dogs are even allowed in cafes or in pub restaurants.
I get why they might be ok in a pub, away from the restaurant bit.

My dad used to have a shop in the 60s/70s and he decided to ban dogs from his shop as they kept weeing on his piles of newspapers that were on the floor ready to be delivered or they'd cock their legs against his book/card stands.
The shop used to stink of Jeyes Fluid .

And yes, I have a dog.

I have a lot of dogs and I adore them. But no, YANBU. Mine are all rescues and some are perfectly cafe/restaurant suitable, lay down, no noise, happy to snooze. Those ones I take with me. Occasionally, not all the time and not all together!! The others, who would bark/whine/generally disrupt others, stay at home. I love dogs, all dogs, but I wouldn’t want my coffee/meal out disrupted by a stressed out dog.

Likewise children! Smile

BakedTattie · 05/02/2022 18:04

I don’t like dogs, or kids in cafes

ButtockUp · 05/02/2022 18:05

Actually @ElftonWednesday you're right there too.

Despite my disdain for dogs wandering cafes etc... I'd rather have a dog wander around than feral children, whose parents couldn't give a f*

@oakleaffy
"Hardly any canine diseases in UK are zoonotic."

But the ones that are can be very unpleasant/irreversible, particularly toxocariasis.

Of course, healthy, well cared for dogs will be unlikely to have the worms/bacteria etc - but how can you know if the dog in that cafe IS healthy and well cared for?

Would prefer not to find out the hard way, sorry!

We tend to sit outside if we have our dog with us, she is well behaved and will sit under the table, a couple of weeks ago we sat outside and the owner insisted we come in, (it was cold) loves dogs, got her a little bowl of water to put under the table, we ordered lunch all good.

But we had some filthy glares from people and felt very uncomfortable. Ate and left as soon as we could, the owner and staff were lovely, she was the only dog, she is a medium size terrier so not big.

I was in a new cafe on Friday for breakfast. Nice place, newly opened and genuinely comfortable. Food was well prepared and prices reasonable. Holds about 20 people, on the small side but there's plenty of room.

Woman walks in with a dog. Dog was Labrador I think. She sits down and dog sits at her feet blocking the narrow space the staff walk through to wait the tables.

Cafe owner (middle aged woman) quietly explains to woman that they don't allow dogs inside for space reasons (offers to sit woman outside or place bowl of water outside for dog).

Dog owner unreasonably argues with the cafe owner, attempts to include other patrons in the argument and spends about 4 minutes verbally attacking the staff and claims they "hate animals". Her "rights" were violated.

Little shocks me in London, but this was a new low.

@HereBeFuckery you seriously think you are going to catch a disease from a dog? One that I assume you don’t touch, but might be near you in a cafe? I’ve had many multiples of dogs for more than 20 years, including (shock horror) foreign ones….never ever have I, or anyone I know (who are mad like me and also have multiple dogs) caught anything off a dog! All my teacher friends though are poorly all the time….

Cafe's are not libraries, nobody is required to be quiet. They have all sorts of noises and atmospheres, if you don't like it don't spend your time there

It's true that I don't have to spend my time there, but i would like to. The fact that I can choose to walk out doesn't stop me from thinking that the owners of the disruptive dogs are selfish and inconsiderate.
