Hairdresser smoking during appointment

AchillesInHeels · 04/02/2022 16:16

I go to my hairdresser's house for my appointment and get a cut and blow dry in her kitchen. Kitchen has the back door to outside. Hairdresser smokes and so does her partner. Partner not there all the time but when he is he often sits at the dining table smoking. Hairdresser sometimes smokes during appointment but when she does she opens the back door. AIBU to think that you shouldn't smoke when you run your business from your home and have clients in getting a service? My sister thinks I should get over it as I'm choosing to go to the hairdresser's house and it's her home and she can do what she wants.

So:
IABU - hairdresser can do what she wants in her own home despite having clients in at the time
IANBU - hairdresser should treat kitchen as a place of work during appointment times and not smoke or allow her partner to smoke

YANBU.
Why the heck would you pay to have your hair stink of smoke?!
No thanks.
Definitely wouldn't be going back.

@JimmyTheHoover

Easy to see covid frothing is losing it's appeal, we're back to the standard anti smokers froth from the good old days. Fourth this week.

Not only is it unprofessional but surely it's dangerous with flammable hair products around? Hairspray and fags don't mix. It may be her home but her and her husband should at least have a smoke free room for clients.

I thought this would be illegal as she is working?

But, even if not, I would definitely be finding a new hairdresser!

Anonymous48 · 04/02/2022 18:33

I also go to a my hairdresser's house to get my hair done rather than to a salon. She's lovely and I like the way she does my hair. However, I can't stand being around people smoking, so I would have to stop going to her if she did that. It's her home and it would be her choice, so I think you are being unreasonable by thinking she shouldn't smoke when you're there. But you would absolutely be reasonable to find a new stylist.

WhatTheWhoTheWhatThe · 04/02/2022 18:40

That’s gross but you’re daft to keep using her if you dislike it so much!

Not if her home isn't her registered business address (which it won't be)

It's vile and I wouldn't go

Newly done stinky hair

@ShirleyBadass

Pretty sure that if her home is classed as her place of work, then smoking inside it would be illegal?

I imagine though that telling her that probably isn't going to change anything, so yeah you're going to have to suck it up or go somewhere else.

Well, you are right ...but do any authorities know it is a place of work? Doubt she's registered with any professional bodies, or insured, or paying any class of tax.

@AchillesInHeels Lockdown is over, there is no need to be going down any dark alley to a black (or brunette, blonde or bloody balayage) market hairdresser. Get thee to a salon

Cas112 · 04/02/2022 18:48

Get a new hairdresser if you don't like it, it's her own home and she can do as she pleases in it

Suzi888 · 04/02/2022 18:49

@Aubree17

New hairdresser. Who wants their hair result done for it to stink of smoke 🤮

I am sure you need to comply with at least some workplace regulations if you are carrying out a business from your home. So I think there is a fair chance this is illegal, even if it isn’t illegal it is really poor practice. I am only surprised that anybody would go back.

Auntieobem · 04/02/2022 18:54

I wouldn't go back, very unprofessional and who wants to come back from hairdressers stinking of smoke. But I voted yabu, because you choose to go there. So, don't go back and tell her why.

ButtockUp · 04/02/2022 19:11

Speaking as someone who loves a sneaky John Player Special, I'd be finding a new hairdresser too.

AchillesInHeels · 04/02/2022 19:30

Thank you all for your responses. I guess I've just been going to her for so long that I've become a bit blinded to how horrible it is! But more and more I've been getting frustrated with coming home with newly done hair but smelling of smoke so having to shower as soon as I get in! I was ready to stop going until my sister said that I was being unreasonable, but you've helped me see that IANBU!
