Hairdresser smoking during appointment

AchillesInHeels · 04/02/2022 16:16

I go to my hairdresser's house for my appointment and get a cut and blow dry in her kitchen. Kitchen has the back door to outside. Hairdresser smokes and so does her partner. Partner not there all the time but when he is he often sits at the dining table smoking. Hairdresser sometimes smokes during appointment but when she does she opens the back door. AIBU to think that you shouldn't smoke when you run your business from your home and have clients in getting a service? My sister thinks I should get over it as I'm choosing to go to the hairdresser's house and it's her home and she can do what she wants.

So:
IABU - hairdresser can do what she wants in her own home despite having clients in at the time
IANBU - hairdresser should treat kitchen as a place of work during appointment times and not smoke or allow her partner to smoke

Easy to see covid frothing is losing it's appeal, we're back to the standard anti smokers froth from the good old days.
Fourth this week.

DillDanding · 04/02/2022 16:35

Ewww. That’s revolting. You need a new hairdresser.

Mumdiva99 · 04/02/2022 16:35

Whilst I think it disgusting - you are going to her home. If you don't like it go elsewhere.

You can't honestly think smoking during doing someone's hair is good practice?

CaptainMyCaptain · 04/02/2022 16:40

@EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn

I’d find a new hairdresser.
Same here. Not sure of the legal position re home/workplace - is it even licensed as a place of business? I wouldn't go there again as I don't want my hair smelling of cigarettes.
SeeminglyOblivious · 04/02/2022 16:41

I'm really not generally a smoking pearl clutcher but fuck me, that's rank.

I'd have asked her/her husband to stop as soon as they sparked up and if they refused I'd have been out of there without paying a penny.

merrymouse · 04/02/2022 16:42

It sounds horrible - who wants to leave the hairdresser smelling of cigarette smoke? But obviously you just need to find a different hair dresser.

Thatsplentyjack · 04/02/2022 16:44

If she was doing a really good job of ny hair this wouldn't stop me going. It's unprofessional, but yes, she can do what she likes in her own home, she can run her business however she likes and you can choose wether or not to use the service.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 04/02/2022 16:45

I'm a smoker and I can't stand it when people smoke inside their own homes (and I'm there visiting I mean) let alone while I'm there paying for a service.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 04/02/2022 16:45

Is it a real business or is it something she does for cash in hand/favour to mates sort of thing?

Iamnotamermaid · 04/02/2022 16:48

Could not do that. Out of respect for you she should not be smoking. Find a new hairdresser.

Georgeskitchen · 04/02/2022 16:52

Smoking is banned in all workplaces. If this is her registered business address she is breaking the law .
Who wants to sit in a smoke filled room while having a hair do?

This!! I smoke too and smoking in your house is so horrible. Smoking over a client (or anyone) is not only unprofessional and potentially illegal it's also totally selfish.
SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 04/02/2022 17:04

@M0nica44 When I saw that someone had quoted me in this thread I was convinced it was going to be someone having a go at me for admitting to being a smoker Grin

PopcornPeacock · 04/02/2022 17:04

She's breaking the law by smoking in the workplace.

No way would I pay to have my hair done and then leave smelling of old fag ends.

I just wouldn't go there, because even if she didn't smoke during your appointment, she will do so when you're not there, and the residue hangs in the air.

Yuck!

Staffy1 · 04/02/2022 17:12

Don’t know how people keep smoking if they don’t do it in their house. It would have made me give up earlier if I had to go outside in crappy weather day and night for a ciggy.
She shouldn’t do it, but if she can keep find clients who don’t mind then why not.

Kite22 · 04/02/2022 17:13

Same as Bood - I'm not sure which way to vote as I think people can do what they want in their own house, and if anyone chooses to have their haircut in someone's kitchen (which I have done myself, nothing wrong with that) then they accept, or don't accept what the 'rules' are in that house.
OTOH, I wouldn't sit there with them smoking, and I wouldn't be wanting my hair cut by someone who is smoking, so I wouldn't go there.

velvet24 · 04/02/2022 17:18

Illegal as this is smoking in the workplace?

Cherrysoup · 04/02/2022 17:20

I’d find a new hairdresser and tell her why.

When I lived in a block of flats with no lift I definitely smokes less. Generally we have a nice sheltered outdoor space so it's no hardship going outside.
SpaghettiArmsMurderer · 04/02/2022 17:27

Yuck, definitely find a new hairdresser unless she is willing to come to you? I’d have to wash my hair when I got home which defeats the point a bit.

PermanentTemporary · 04/02/2022 17:28

Did she give up working in a salon because she couldn't smoke?

Im not sure if it's reasonable but hell would freeze over before I went back tbh.

ufucoffee · 04/02/2022 17:29

It's her home, she can do what she wants. But so can you.

maddiemookins16mum · 04/02/2022 17:38

Horrible (and I say that as a smoker). I accept making mt own hair stink, don’t want to pay someone else to.

Gizacluethen · 04/02/2022 17:40

I absolutely would not go. She could be the best hairdresser in the world and only charge a fiver, I'd rather lop it off myself with a rusty knife.
