To think that if you get Wordle on the second guess it’s more luck than judgment?

My friend is extremely boastful about the fact she got Wordle right on the second guess. Thinks it’s down to inate skill and excellent vocabulary. However, I think getting it right on the second guess is largely down to getting lucky with the letters in your first guess.

Who’s right?

I did it for the first time yesterday - 3 goes, and today 4 attempts.
I do like it.

Do they ever use a letter more than once in a word?

oh and I do think 2 attempts is a fair amount of luck - I'd still be pleased with myself though Grin

Yes they do, which makes it tricky. I think the word Robot recently was difficult for a lot of people!
ThinWomansBrain · 04/02/2022 11:27

thanks blueberrymacaron - thats useful to know

Wafflesnsniffles · 04/02/2022 11:27

Totally. Yes there is some skill in Wordle but mostly its luck. Ive had a few goes but wont be bothering with it anymore. There are much better quick little games to play on a screen I think.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 04/02/2022 11:30

Third attempt today!

ThinWomansBrain · 04/02/2022 11:32

@Wafflesnsniffles - reccomendations please - what are your favourites?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 04/02/2022 11:35

Pretty much luck

I think skill can get you there on the third go but the second has to have an element of luck - if you happened to get none on the first go (which is luck) the second go is a guess too. If you got some right, that’s a lucky guess.

The whole game is a mix of the two - she’s a bit thick if she thinks it’s all her still and vocab!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 04/02/2022 11:36

If you don’t guess it in 6 does it tell you the answer?

DrSbaitso · 04/02/2022 11:39

Quite a few people I know got it in two today, which surprised me. I got it in 3, which also surprised me, given it wasn't the most obvious word.

With some words, depending on the letters, there's a lot of guesswork because there are so many possibilities. It is sometimes worth trying a word you know it can't be, just to find or eliminate letters.

DrSbaitso · 04/02/2022 11:41

I think the word Robot recently was difficult for a lot of people!

Yeah, and "knoll".

minipie · 04/02/2022 11:42

I think it may tell you the next day? Not sure

I got it in two the first time I ever played. Definitely luck, my starting word was fairly close.

Ariela · 04/02/2022 11:42

My start word had 3 correct letters, I could have guessed another way but got it on 2. I've got it in 1 before now, usually 3 or 4. It's got boring now.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 04/02/2022 11:45

The one time I failed it told me the correct answer.

Ozgirl75 · 04/02/2022 11:53

I hate it if I get it in two! It’s too easy. I love the ones where I have to work at it and finally figure it out in three, four or even five.
Shard the other day took me a while as I had too many options. I actually find the “harder” words are easier to work out as there are more options. Proxy was easy as there weren’t many words that fit the letters I had. But when you have (say) “ight” and then the letters r, l, t and s left, you could easily take three or four extra goes.
It’s a total mixture of skill and luck but it’s not some tricky vocabulary test, all the words are very straight forward.

Ozgirl75 · 04/02/2022 11:55

When we had Those the other day it took me 5 goes as I went Audio, Prose, Chose, Whose, Those. I could have had Those on the third guess (or even second) but I thought it was too easy!

BonnesVacances · 04/02/2022 11:56

@givethatbabyaname

Depends. Sometimes the first guess can leave you with a permutation of letters and order of letters that can make the second guess a skilled response.

If you got nothing out of the first guess, it’ll mostly be luck.

This. If you get a good hit on the first word, which can be a mix of skill and luck, the second guess can be an educated one rather than just a fluke.

Quartz2208 · 04/02/2022 11:59

That is where though Ozgirl tactics come in with something like that and do a word that has any many of the possible letters as you can to figure it out wasting one guess

PinkFizz1 · 04/02/2022 12:00

I got it on the second guess today and was rather pleased with myself 😂

I believe it's selected randomly, so easy/hard doesn't come into it.
PorkPieForStarters · 04/02/2022 12:16

I just got today's in 2 for the first time!

I have a few words I usually start off with which have commonly-used letters and don't repeat the same letters in each word, so I can usually quickly build up a picture of what it might be. Today I got three green blocks and one yellow block on my first word, so quite easy from there. This has made my day Grin

MakeMineALarge1 · 04/02/2022 13:18

What are good starting words to use?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 04/02/2022 13:28

I tried chose and whose before those too!

Today I was almost there on the first go as I happened to get the last three letters correct. But then it took me two more wrong guesses (which had as much chance of being right and the answer) to get it.

toastofthetown · 04/02/2022 13:29

I use orate. It has the three most common vowels and good consonants as well.
ThinWomansBrain · 04/02/2022 13:34

I ust went down a rabbit hole in discovering the archive - mostly 3 & 4 attempts. (helped by knowing about knoll and robot from above).
I've got lots of other things I SHOULD be doing.

someone on another thread recommended audio to start with, as lots of vowels identified.
I tend to go for common letters in the first attempt (think low point value letters in scrabble).
