To think that if you get Wordle on the second guess it’s more luck than judgment?

My friend is extremely boastful about the fact she got Wordle right on the second guess. Thinks it’s down to inate skill and excellent vocabulary. However, I think getting it right on the second guess is largely down to getting lucky with the letters in your first guess.

Who’s right?

Lol Ive just done today’s in 2!

Normally a 4 or 5!

Wordle 230 2/6

⬛🟨🟩🟩⬛
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

I haven't checked on Twitter but are people revealing the words there? That might be what's happening with your friend.

DropYourSword · 04/02/2022 08:00

As a one-off I'd say a fluke, if they consistently manage in two then yeah I'd think that was skill!

Whatinthe · 04/02/2022 08:03

I got it in 2 yesterday- total luck based on getting 3/5 of the letters in my first word, then luck in choosing the right one as my next guess. It felt good but I'm not about to go boasting about any skills 😂

RonMaelDancing · 04/02/2022 08:03

Someone on my feed claimed to get it in one yesterday. It was a bit of a weird word and I don't believe it for a second 😅

DaggerIsle · 04/02/2022 08:03

Got it in 1 today. Pure luck but I haven't felt this proud in years. Grin

fringeiscool · 04/02/2022 08:05

I think whether it's skill or luck or combo depends on what the first choice word result was. If some of the letters were yellow or green, obviously needs some deduction to figure out what the second word is. If none or one yellow from the first round, for example, and they get it on second go, that is heavy element of luck rather than skill.

eldora · 04/02/2022 08:07

@Blueroses99 thank you! Got my first Wordle.

RavenclawDiadem · 04/02/2022 08:09

My strategy is to start with a word which has 5 different letters and preferably contains the most common letters like E, T, S, R. Steam, smart, those, traps etc.

If all the letters in the first word go grey, I then try to pick another word with 5 different letters - not always easy. Usually get it in 3 or 4 unless it's a really weird word with Q, Z, or X in it.

toastofthetown · 04/02/2022 08:11

A fair amount of luck, but that doesn’t stop me being pleased with myself when I get it in two. I nearly had it in two yesterday, but the last letter was wrong (like Bland/Blank) and I was a bit gutted when the last tile wasn’t green.

No ads on Wordle, but as far as I know the only official Wordle is the website, and any apps are third party.

HollowTalk · 04/02/2022 08:13

Does anyone else use the hard version? It means you can't use letters that you know don't exist in the word. I didn't realise there were two versions but there's a little button at the top right side it allows you to switch to hard version.

UniversalAunt · 04/02/2022 08:13

Start with a word of many vowels…

Quartz2208 · 04/02/2022 08:16

I think yes luck in getting it right on your first word helps. But I have found as I play you do start to think more about what you want that first word to achieve in terms of correct or incorrect letters. Then you do have to think about it.

So definitely is a mix of both

NotImpossible · 04/02/2022 08:16

I've done it once - got letters in the first word so I had something to work with but it was a lucky guess. The worst for me is when you get four letters in the correct places and there's still 3 or 4 possible options! It's so frustrating!

Billybagpuss · 04/02/2022 08:16

Very much luck. I got it in 3 today but guess 2 was an anagram. I could have had so many other valid words for guess 2 as I only had the 2 vowels from guess 1.

KittenKong · 04/02/2022 08:19

I was lucky enough to guess a word that had all the letters, with two on the correct place. Sometimes I have most the letters and can’t guess the word at all (‘prick’ indeed). It’s luck. I prefer crosswords.

NotImpossible · 04/02/2022 08:20

@EishetChayil

I have an unbroken streak of getting it in my first go, because so many numb-nuts post their results on social media and I just copy.
Why?

Do I admit this?

Ok I did once get to guess 4 with several remaining options so I opened up the iPad so I didn’t exceed the 6 goes on my phone where I usually do it. I did genuinely get it on go 5, but did feel guilty even though I’m only cheating myself and rarely post it on sm.

I do informally (stick to the letters in the right place, use all the letters I’ve discovered, no letters which have been eliminated) but I like to have the option to create a random word with lots of missing letters if I’m really struggling.
Crackercrazy · 04/02/2022 08:28

I played for the first time yesterday and got it on my 2nd go - pure skill Grin

rainbowandglitter · 04/02/2022 08:30

I've played it 3 times. Got it in 2 once and third time the 2 other times

HollowTalk · 04/02/2022 08:31

That's what I do, too @toastofthetown.

rainbowandglitter · 04/02/2022 08:31

I didn't realise you could play it with fake words. I've only played it with having to use actual words.

It rejects fake words.
pointythings · 04/02/2022 08:37

I'd say two is a combo of luck and skill. On the whole knowing what combinations are frequent in the English language helps. I normally run 3 or 4.

I also do the Dutch one (am bilingual) and that's hard because my in depth knowledge of how Dutch works is rusty AF. My best run in Dutch is 4 and I don't see that happening often - it's normally 5 or 6.
