Dh likes to choose lots of little dishes we can share. I am fine with this most of the time, but, on occasion, I just want to order my meal and for it to be mine!

Aibu?

It depends, I don't mind sharing a large rice and chicken balls

I won't share the chips and sweet snd sour sauce though. If you want them you order your bloody own!

Yerroblemom1923 · 03/02/2022 19:54

We didn't have takeaways as kids (no money) so when I was in my late teens and ordered one with friends I was quite taken aback by this sharing culture - why order what you want if everyone else is going to eat it?! I'm veggie, I can't eat any of Fred's chicken bhuna or Maria's beef dopiaza! Fortunately I can't eat a lot anyway, but it's nice to have the next day!
From this thread I'm beginning to think no one actually likes sharing but it's seen as the done thing, so we do it anyway!

FrugalFrancine · 03/02/2022 19:56

It is definitely harder sharing with a man. Even if he doesn't assume he is entitled to more of the curry, I have been conditioned to think that, so on some level, I feel I have to hang back and not take half!

We always share a curry, rice and naan between two of us. It would be too much food if we both ordered them and I never like reheating takeaway food the next day. We always get poppadoms and pickle tray and sometimes a couple of starters so there’s plenty.

Pizzas are always cheaper if you get one large but sometimes if DP wants a topping I don’t we will get two smaller ones.

I might think differently if the sharing wasn’t just with DP but I e definitely prefer it for the two of us.
@MrsTerryPratchett I eat with a spoon that has both pros and cons. Pro is a spoon makes a great mouth shovel. Con is it makes a poor weapon :(
Bloody love eating proper food with a spoon. So much better to shovel rice in with a fork.

ABitOfAShitShow · 03/02/2022 20:00

THAN* with a fork

MintyGreenDream · 03/02/2022 20:21

We never share mains but we do share rice or naan etc

duvetdayforeveryone · 03/02/2022 20:22

@ABitOfAShitShow When I next leave my house I shall ensure I am holding up a large tablespoon so the other mouth shovelers can identify that I am one of them. They shall smile at me with my big shiny spoon, and I shall smile back at them knowing the next meal they eat shall be consumed using a marvellous spoon Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/02/2022 20:25

I never share naans. One whole garlic naan for me. I don't eat rice with Indian food. DH still talks about Naangate at my parents when my dad tried to order one naan between FIVE PEOPLE. I lost my poop. I got a whole naan.

ONE between 5!!!! That is madness.

God no, I hate this too. It makes me very anxious. I was raised a vegetarian and have lots of memories of being at places where the food was shared and all the veggie stuff would go and I'd be left with nothing. Once I went to a Chinese with a lazy Susan and someone on the table asked everyone to put their dishes on and turn the table so everyone got to try a bit of something, but mine was the only veggie dish. I point blank refused.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/02/2022 20:31

I KNOW! I love my dad but there are limits.

You may be the wisest of us all, @MrsTerryPratchett.

I'd always prefer variety. Who wants an entire plate of one type of chicken in-a-sauce if you can have some chicken, some lamb, some veggies, some rice and some bread?

I do. I want the plate of chicken and rice please and thank you Grin

However, I will share naan, daal etc, to get the variety!

DH and I always share a Chinese but we never share any other takeaway. I'm happy to share Chinese with him because we like the same things. I do NOT like sharing Chinese with anyone else because they always add things that I hate and then don't order enough of what I like. I find it hard work Grin

I have a lamb main, sag aloo and a naan. Plenty of variety. Also beer.

I have none of this at the moment on LFHC but in usuals times.

Maybe we should start a movement. I mean, that sounds hard and I’m quite tired to be honest…but maybe we could just start with visible spoons at all times and see how it goes. Grin

MrsCremuel · 03/02/2022 20:56

I HATE this. I can’t stand Tapas for this very reason.

MissConductUS · 03/02/2022 20:59

Any sharing must be discussed and agreed upon before the takeaway is ordered. For us, we just share starters. Mains are off-limits.

CaptainThe95thRifles · 03/02/2022 21:00

I don't eat the whole thing in one night - I like leftovers the following day. It's not gluttony, it's maximising the number of meals I don't have to cook myself Grin

You could try a rap on the knuckles though... 🌹

MissConductUS · 03/02/2022 21:17

Re the fork stabbing technique, there is a story in my family history that a relative died of tetanus about four generations ago after suffering this rebuke while taking food off of someone else's plate. The story might be apocryphal, but have at it if everyone is up to date on their jabs.

SmellyOldOwls · 03/02/2022 21:18

If you have lots of little dishes to share you need to sit at the table really. I hate eating takeaway sitting at the table, except curry maybe as you need two hands for tearing and dipping naan. I love getting a Chinese, filling a bowl with my meal and flopping on the sofa in front of the tv with it. Mine!
