To be annoyed by people who don’t neuter their dogs and let their dogs hump other dogs nonstop

It drives me up the wall that some people (mostly men) refuse to get their dogs neutered.

It seems some men are just so insecure about their own manhood that they try to compensate by leaving their dog intact? As if that's supposed to "prove" their own masculinity somehow?

I have a female dog who was spayed at 10 months, yet is constantly being humped. The owners do nothing to stop it, or worse find it funny when my dog is clearly distressed. I’ve even seen dogs knock over and hump young kids, which the owners find hilarious Angry

I can’t see any reason to not get your dog neutered, except rare medical issues. AIBU?

@CalIie humping isn’t a sexual behaviour caused by neutering.

Dominance has been debunked. Humping isn’t a sign of one dog trying to dominate another.
Humping is often down to over excitement.

Pizzaplanet6 · 02/02/2022 20:49

You do realise that neutering doesn’t necessarily mean a dog won’t hump, right? Just like it won’t stop them going after an in season bitch. Neutering does not just stop dogs from having urges…

Pizzaplanet6 · 02/02/2022 20:51

Not saying that any dog/bitch should be allowed to harass other animals or people though, neutered or not!

Hmm. I’m not so sure. The humper in my family is a small, elderly terrier (neutered) and the humpee is a young, excitable giant (unneutered). Well, excitable for a giant. He has bursts of energy. The little guy just wanders over to hump the big guy’s tail. The big guy just takes it. Doesn’t seem to be linked to excitement in this household.

damnthisvirusandmarriage · 02/02/2022 20:57

I worn with dogs all day every day. Even I don’t see this much humping. And when I do it’s usually the neutered boys (and girls!) who are the humpsters!

So I’ve put YABU based on that. And the face you’ve put mostly men. Again it’s pretty equal IME.

Aworldofmyown · 02/02/2022 20:59

Neutered dogs can still hump. I've also come across female dogs that hump.

Iamkmackered1979 · 02/02/2022 20:59

My boy is an anxious lad and a humper
He hasn’t humped another dog but only just castrated due to size and age and guess what still has the urge. His arousal levels increase and it makes him very over excited and he tries to hump. However this is massively less due to training and hard work not by castration. Don’t assume that dogs are humping other dogs because of this. Owners are perhaps just working to stop their dogs or they might not be but I get that it would be annoying. We have a redirection word/noise if he starts getting over excited - it could be something that’s scared him or another pup tying to play with him we just move off and go home or take him to do some games to disengage works well. Thankfully it’s not other dogs he humps though.

unhappy46 · 02/02/2022 20:59

@Wolfiefan nah - it is absolutely dominance in this household. Esp as the main humper is a very dominant little half chihuahua! My girls also do it to eachother when they're in season. I suspect they just don't quite know what to do with all the hormonal surges!

Wolfiefan · 02/02/2022 21:00

@unhappy46 the dominance theory has been debunked. Even the person who came up with it admits they got it wrong. It may be rude but it certainly isn’t a case of one trying to be “top dog”.

MiddleOfThePack · 02/02/2022 21:02

My 13-yr-old terrier is neutered and still tries it on every so often. He's trying to dominate. My 10 month old entire lab boy doesn't, but he does mark in the house [see separate thread!].

Dogs do it - same as they like to sniff bums. It's normal doggy behaviour and I get a bit fed up of other dog owners thinking a humping dog is down to a bad owner.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 02/02/2022 21:05

My female dog tries to hump the cats, cushions and a fleece throw she bundles up.

Norgie · 02/02/2022 21:07

My dog is a spayed bitch and she jumps but.......she only ever tries to jump my DH, no one and nothing else.
Apparently I should be jealous of another female showing him her affections.
I always reply that if the only female he can pull these days is a dog then he needs to give it up.

Norgie · 02/02/2022 21:08

Humps, not jumps! Bloody auto correct!

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 02/02/2022 21:18

YANBU in the slightest. There is no reason NOT to neuter your dog unless you intend to breed from it. Far too many irresponsible dog owners around. You are spot on about men not wanting to neuter their dogs as they feel that it takes away their masculinity and as for female owners wanting to let their bitches have one set of puppies grrrrrr!

pikapikapukachu · 02/02/2022 21:29

I'm really shocked at how many posters have replied saying their dogs aren't neutered. What is the reason for not neutering unless you're going to breed from them? Isn't it better for their health that they are neutered?

I haven't neutered my male dog because he is beautifully behaved and it's simply just not necessary because we are responsible owners with him i.e we're not letting him run around randomly shagging. I'm happier that he gets to experience his natural state.....neutering feels a bit like unnecessary circumcision. I'm sure for some dogs it's a good idea, but it's really mainly to prevent too many dogs. I recall that there is some slight risk of developing cancer, but I wasn't convinced by the stats at the time, or the fact that it's a view pushed by UK vets.

In some other countries, spaying and neutering are considered to be inhumane. For example in Sweden 93% of females and 99% of male dogs are left intact.
Actually, last time I checked, under Norway's Animal Welfare Act, it is illegal to neuter your dog unless it was deemed medically necessary or for animal welfare.

No. It’s absolutely not better for their health in the case of my dog. It’s more convenient and can address some behaviours but there’s absolutely no guarantee neutering will stop or reduce any sexual dominant or aggressive behaviours.

My dog is a giant and his breed does not have long on this earth. Neutering increases his risk of bone cancers hugely. So I’m point blank not doing it. Any behavioural issues that were to arise I’d address with further training, but nothing so far. He’s a good boy.

Mine isn’t yet, haven’t decided whether I’m going to or not.

He’s only 15 months - but he’s a fairly anxious rescue and there’s a lot of evidence that neutering nervous dog’s can tip them over into much more serious behavioural issues.

Also the health benefits for males just aren’t that cut and dried tbh.

My vet told me there is absolutely no reason to get my dog neutered unless I'm worried about testicular cancer or if he's aggressive.

He's now 6 and is the most docile, silly, loving spaniel.

Just to add, he doesn't hump.

wetotter · 02/02/2022 22:01

I voted YABU because jumping is a behaviour that is unrelated to whether the dog is neutered. It's sometimes exhibited by females too.

I agree that people should be training their dogs not to do it. And that's all,p dogs.

OnlyTheTitosaurusOfTheIceberg · 02/02/2022 22:06

Humping is neither sexually nor dominance motivated. It is general over stimulation/over excitement. Both sexes hump, neutered and unneutered.

(This pervasive, incorrect and downright dangerous belief that dogs are pack animals who exert dominance over each other needs to crawl under a rock and die forever, quite frankly.)

Infinitemoon · 02/02/2022 22:12

My 7 year old dog isn't neutered and has never tried to do this on a walk or at home.

Behaviour can delay neutering. Early neutering can have a detrimental affect on behaviour and also physically too.

My bitch isn’t neutered because I haven’t got chance yet, I may have a puppy from her (for my job and I have several people who want one too) and I’m not sure how she’ll deal with the pain. She’s VERY sensitive to pain and I want a good few days off with her when she is neutered to help her cope.

100% this.

Yes! @MiddleOfThePack he’s not trying to dominate.
