Anyone had concussion? Do I actually need a&e?

Think I have concussion. Bumped my head on a sharp corner Sunday evening, it left a dent but not a huge bump. Felt a bit funny afterwards and obviously it hurt but nothing massively unusual. Vision was a bit fuzzy initially. Ever since, I have been incredibly nauseous to the extent that I have taken two pregnancy tests (despite DH having had a vasectomy!) as it feels exactly like the start of hyperemesis. I still have a throbbing headache and feel very fatigued and a bit ‘off balance’. I only have the tiniest lump on my head, you’d probably just think I had a spot.

I phoned the GP this morning and they’ve said to go to a&e. I can’t see what a&e will do beyond say ‘yes, you’ve probably got a mild concussion, take it easy until you feel better’. Is there something else they’ll do or some other risks?

Go. You may have a small bleed (worst case) that need the pressure relieving. Sickness 4-5 days on is uncommon.

I would definitely go to A & E, they'll probably X-ray you just to rule out a fracture.

Tabitha888 · 02/02/2022 10:15

Why ignore medical advice...... then go on MN... you need to go a n e as you could have a bleed on the brain.. 🙈

Exactly. Mind boggling.
Lockheart · 02/02/2022 10:16

Do what the actual doctor has told you to do - go to A&E. Please don't take medical advice from strangers on the internet.

KeepYaHeadUp · 02/02/2022 10:17

I'd go, OP. My FIL was rushed to A&E a couple of weeks after hitting his head as he had a funny turn. It turned out to be related to his heart but they suddenly became concerned when they knew he's hit his head. It was also on a sharp corner. Go a get checked out

GaiusHelenMohiam · 02/02/2022 10:17

I had a nasty fall a couple of months ago and ended up with moderate concussion.

I had to go to a&e for a CT scan because I vomited the next morning, they took it all very seriously and I was seen within an hour of arrival and sent straight for a scan.

Luckily there was no bleed, just a horrible knock but it was very scary how seriously they took it.

So based on that, and the nausea, get yourself seen.

Joystir59 · 02/02/2022 10:19

From.your symptoms you very probably have a bleed on the brain which can be life threatening.

SmallestInTheClass · 02/02/2022 10:20

Yes, go to A&E. Hope you get seen quickly and it's nothing to worry about Flowers

Rainbowqueeen · 02/02/2022 10:20

I’d do what the doctor said.
They know how busy A and E are. They are not going to send you there if they don’t think you need to be checked out

JuneOsborne · 02/02/2022 10:21

I'm suspecting that you're not thinking straight. An actual doctor has told you to go to A&E. Therefore, the best and most sensible course of action is to go to A&E.

Take a book and drinks and a sandwich.

Hope it's nothing, but worth getting that confirmation from a Dr!

Shimmyshimmycocobop · 02/02/2022 10:24

Get yourself to A&E for a CT scan, it's most likely nothing serious but why risk it?

KrisAkabusi · 02/02/2022 10:31

I hope it's the concussion that's making you ignore medical advice and ask a bunch of unqualified strangers instead!

Yes, do what he said and get checked out. Concussion can lead to compression which can be fatal.

Motnight · 02/02/2022 10:32

Really Op? You are asking a bunch of random people whether to take the advice of a medical professional?

ghostyslovesheets · 02/02/2022 10:34

Yeah got to A&E nice done the same and ended up having a scan - all fine but I was in bed for over a week with tiredness and nausea- best get it checked

ThePennyJustDropped · 02/02/2022 10:35

OP there's a reason head injuries and suspected concussion are taken seriously. Definitely sounds like you need a scan so hopefully you're on the way to A&E now to get looked at.

whataballbag · 02/02/2022 10:37

You need to be in a&e. Sickness after head injuries needs a&e. As does visual disturbances.

A dent is worse than a lump

uncomfortablydumb53 · 02/02/2022 12:51

Yes, do take your GP seriously
A dent means that the pressure has gone inwards and shaken your brain

Galacticat · 02/02/2022 13:10

Yes. Go. My husband had concussion, had post concussion syndrome for almost two years after and they also found a bleed and burst blood vessels in his brain. He is under the care of the GP now as he's a stroke risk and on course for vascular dementia. Concussion can be very serious.

MeatPieWoman · 03/02/2022 06:24

@WorkEvent How are things now?

I agree. Why on earth would you ask random people who most likely aren't doctors or medically trained in anyway.
purplesequins · 03/02/2022 06:30

I hope you are fine op and nit answering because you are adhering to the advice.

If op does have concussion she may not have been thinking properly when she posted. Show some compassion.

Hope everything is okay @WorkEvent

ShinyMe · 03/02/2022 07:05

These kinds of things always make me thing of poor Natasha Richardson. She felt fine too OP until she collapsed and died.

I'm so baffled by the 'what can A&E do though?' thought. They can scan you, they can open up your skull if necessary. They can give you clotting or clot busting drugs, they can do much more than staying at home posting on mumsnet.

misspercy · 03/02/2022 07:33

I couldn't really tell you what concussion was like... because I am missing memories of what happened.

I didn't know I'd have memory loss at the time.

I did get seen by a doctor, but honestly, they shouldn't have discharged me when they did (by myself!), because I have no idea how I got home. It's really disconcerting having missing time.
