To be freaked out by my Fitbit??

According to Fitbit I did 57 steps in the middle of the night, around 2am this morning. I did not get up during the night!!

I know they can sometimes pick up a small number of steps when you move around but not 57!

Now I’m worried I’m sleep walking, would I not know if I was?

I do know I feel absolutely shattered this morning.

Mine does the same, usually 100 or so. I know that I barely move while I sleep, so I think it's just really inaccurate.
I also notice it counts 'steps' while I'm standing in one spot at the kitchen bench chopping up stuff for dinner.

The functions on mine are starting to stop working too, just like my previous fitbits.

I'm thinking of getting a different brand next time, hoping they might be more reliable.

You could have got up, but it's just as likely it's picked up other movement while you were in bed. They are far from accurate.

But 57 steps isn't going to exhaust you even if you did get up in the night.

Fitbits are really inaccurate. I watched my step count go up when I was sat on a moving train once.

No i don’t feel exhausted from the 57 steps, I’m not that much of a sloth 😂 I woke up at 4am (as usual) 😩

We got my 6 year old DS a cheap "fitbit" from Amazon because he wanted one like mine. Set it up with a step count target of 10k (like mummy's!). He's always overjoyed to have hit his target before lunch most days because it measures steps while he'll travelling in the bloody car!

I have a Fitbit flex which I wear on my ankle, it gives a more accurate reading than when I used wear it on my wrist which would give me steps for scratching my nose and no steps for walking while pushing a pram.

Mine used to go up when I was doing the ironing, wearing it on my arm. I wouldn't read too much into it.

It's really helpful to know your quality of sleep, how disrupted it is, time awake. FitBit will show you this.

I don't regard FitBit as inaccurate. I love mine. Yes, it picks up hand movements as steps - so if I have a busy morning of meetings, I'll have loads of steps because I use my hands a lot 😀

But equally it doesn't pick up short steps kind of you are walking around the supermarket. It won't include the steps usually as you stop & start too much. So it balances out,

The thing is to use its features while applying common sense - if I have 10k steps by lunchtime but I've been sitting at my desk, I still need to walk / run.

Also my FitBit doesn't always pickup my HIIT sessions properly assigning fewer calories but I know I've got more from my Polar monitor. So you have to be judicious about how it interpret stats from it.

I’ve tested mine out (brand new one) and it can count steps when I’m sitting still moving my arms around quite violently so may well be that.

You may be puzzled by strangers wanting to monitor their sleep. I'm more puzzled by how invested you are in these strangers preferences which don't affect you in the slightest!

You don’t “need” most devices we own but here we are! Who said anyone was worrying about sleep? I find it fascinating to see what my body is doing.

Op my fit bit measures step-counts when in bed on my phone. 57 steps would be about to the toilet and or kitchen for me (I’m in a flat) so it could be anything but too little to suggest you went roaming around the building - more likely you had a dream that may have caused to move your arms around or even just turning over in bed.

Why on earth do you need a gadget to tell you, especially one which is obviously so inaccurate?

I like to monitor my sleep, the amount of time spent in REM, deep sleep, awake time etc - what’s so weird about wanting to monitor your health?

You may know if you're awake. I don't necessarily. I also don't know if I'm having restless sleep. FitBit picks it up - I can see the massive difference in my sleep patterns since I started HRT.

It allows me to understand why I might wake up feeling unrefreshed, and work out different solutions. As someone who's always struggled with sleep - not necessarily insomnia - it's been a huge help.

And it's not inaccurate, for me at least, regarding sleep.

Honestly is it that hard to figure out that other people have different preferences to you?

It'll be because you're moving in bed. Or had a toilet trip you don't remember.

I get steps from driving. I once clocked up 1500 grating cheese. They're not very accurate

I wear my smartwatch to bed because it's my alarm clock. Being woken by a small vibration on my wrist is far more pleasant than being jolted awake by the klaxon sounds of an alarm clock natural light ones are useless for me

The sleep data is handy for conversations with a GP rather than keeping a literal diary because it always matches up with how I feel the next day.

You're oddly bothered by why people like to wear smartwatches to bed.

My friend is an auctioneer and turning his heavy ledger is one step apparently. He does a lot of walking from his auctioneering lectern.

Mine quite often doesn't register I'm walking at all. I can sprint up and down the stairs and it ignores the movement. It pisses me off no end.

And some people have disturbed sleep and aren't aware of it but wake up tired. Some people are just interested. Some people use theirs as an alarm. It harms nobody to track sleep.

I sometimes have hundreds of steps I've apparently done during the night, and sometimes a few hours I've apparently been awake, with no recollection! I've personally concluded it's a mix of very restless sleep and the occasionally semi-sleep activity up and about - but I'm only including the latter because I know I'm prone to it at times.

As to why wear it to bed - why on earth not? If you use it anyway, what's the point of taking it off for the night? I'd just forget to put it on as I'm getting up and miss out on its use.
