To wish iPhone wasn't so hard to switch on?!

The whole switching on and off, having to press Vol up then Vol down then the actual switching off button is quite hard to press down and you have to hold it down really hard - it must be hard for people with arthritic issues in hand as I find it hard enough

Why can't they just have an easy on off button that is smooth and easy to press on??

@CovidCorvid

I have no idea how to turn it off so not had this problem. I find taking screenshots a nightmare though. It’s 50/50 whether it does it or turns the screen off. Buttons are so fiddly
I have an iPhone X and can set mine to tap the back two or three times to take screenshots. I have it set to twice for screenshots and three times for the calculator
Lilifer · 31/01/2022 11:15

"Which phone do you have? Mine is a 12 and you have to hold the power button plus a volume button to turn it off. It's ridiculous really. I keep taking bloody screenshots by mistake. If you press and hold the power button it just launches Siri."

Yes this! ⬆️ if my iPhone 11 glitches this is what has to be done to soft reset it. I think my phone cover is making it harder than it should be but I still think they could have just left it like the older iPhones which you just had one button to press down in order to switch off.

@SantaHat

I still don’t really understand why you’re turning it off so frequently, especially if it’s so hard. But if you must, surely just turn it off via the menu option?
How do you do it via menu option I've never tried that before?

I know nothing of iphones and have no interest in finding out anything as they are over priced rubbish I will never buy.

but if they turn off in a stupid way why dont you just get a different phone, I have a xiaomi it has a button on the side I hold it down it gives me 4 options, reboot, turn off, airplane mode and silent.

my son has an Oppo it does similar.

Settings -> General -> Shut Down

JugglingJanuary · 31/01/2022 11:18

I only have the 6S so 💁🏻‍♀️

I very very rarely turn mine off, I can't imagine why you're turning it off so often that it's an issue? But yes, just set the back of the phone tapping up!

Yes I will I think your all mad buying them and supporting a company that does not support right to repair and tries its hardest to make their products unrepairable or so restricted and expensive to do so you will give up and buy a new one, thats hardly ecco friendly nor is it good for the customer.

(they also have crap speaker quality and lock you into their ecosystem)

allthingsnaice · 31/01/2022 11:24

@Lilifer

I DO have a case - maybe that's why?? 🤔
I find with mine it is 10x easier without the case! The case is pretty much designed to stop it happening with mine, so it doesn't go off accidentally when in a handbag / pocket against things.

My brother repairs phones I have seen the ones he has had and take his advice thanks.

I prefer to have phones that can be repaired (cost £1.70 to fix my 5 year old Xiaomi when the charging module went).

The last time I spent money on an iPhone was less than £400, 3 years ago. Not all of us buy the newest model every 12 months and spend £1k+ each time. I also never buy phones on contract.

Apple have always been incredible when I’ve needed a repair, or just sought out advice for something that I could easily solve myself.

Damn right they ‘lock you’ into iCloud etc - I’d be lost without it as all my gadgets are apple, and I don’t even have to think about uploading docs to a cloud/Dropbox or other such thing. Whatever I do on my laptop I can see and access immediately from my phone or iPad, no further step required. For my job, this is a necessity.

@Sunsetsupernova

I don’t think many people actually ever turn off their iPhones. I don’t think I ever have in all my years of owning one.
This! Who turns off their iPhones??

I put it on flight mode if I'm somewhere that I can't take calls but other than that, it's on all the time. And it never runs out of power because I've turned my bedside table and side table in the living room into wireless chargers so my phone charges when I put it down. Win win.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 31/01/2022 11:42

iPhones, generally, work out cheaper than the equivalent from other manufacturers despite the higher up-front cost (which is less than it used to be) as they actually have a second hand value even when 4 or 5 years old, and continue to work when that old as well. Which means they’re in use for longer, making them more environmentally friendly than some alternatives. The ecosystem is what makes them easy to use, and ease of use is key in a phone for many people. I’m not sure I’ve ever understood those who vehemently oppose them, it’s not as if Samsung are blazing a trail for humankind in sustainable business!

I have one set up to tap twice for screen shots. Doesn't work half the time but happily talks a screenshot if I put my phone down somewhere.

SoupDragon · 31/01/2022 11:46

I turn mine off every night. Hardly a difficult concept to grasp.

I would rather buy a £200 phone and use it for years and repair it until it cant be repaired anymore.

selling secondhand is a waste as thats implying the phone still works thus theres no need to sell it in the first place just keep using it.

PhoboPhobia · 31/01/2022 12:03

Those instructions with the volume button are for restarting. To turn off you only need to press and hold the one button until the swipe to turn off screen comes up.

As mentioned by a PP there are much easier ways to take screen shots.

You need to use the 'accessibility' function

Settings -Accessibility - Touch -Assisitive Touch (tap then TOGGLE ON) -Customise top level menu

  • then press + to add icons to the top level menu. Then tap each icon to add whatever function you wish.

This 'top level menu' shows as a small unintrusive transparent black square that stays on your screen all the time and when you tap it you can then tap any of the functions you've added. It's really easy to use.

Try a YouTube tutorial

I have screenshot, volume up, volume down and Siri on mine.

You have configured Volume Down at the top and Volume Up at the bottom, and then you share that photo with people? What kind of monster are you?
