To frequently change my MN user name?

CrymeaRvr · 31/01/2022 10:21

I change my MN on a fairly frequent basis. 1) to prevent anyone knowing who I am when I put on personal stuff so I worry being able to search for my posts would make me identifiable IRL which would out me off asking for advice around relationships etc.

  1. I’m in the feminism board a bit and have experienced the nastiness that is a pile-on when my opinions on some subjects, particularly LGBTQ+ stuff, differs from the majority.

A good friend reckons that it’s unreasonable of me, and if I’m going to put out my opinions then I should be able to stand by them regardless of consequences and/or people piling on. She has the one name that she’s had forever and people apparently ‘know’ her on MN.
She keeps banging on about it. So, AIBU to change my name when I feel it’s necessary???

That’s because it’s your own posts @whitebarn

Sorry I’ve just realised what you’ve done @whitebarn

Ignore my previous post! Blush

So did it work? I can't tell as I don't have premium anymore.

Which I should've realised due to all the bloody ads.

Zonder · 31/01/2022 15:40

@MrFsAunt

I didn't think posters could get away with sock puppetry anymore as the same poster will show up if you highlight them in a thread?

Or did I dream that? 👀

How do you highlight a poster?
PurpleDaisies · 31/01/2022 15:41

You can only do it on premium @Zonder

A580Hojas · 31/01/2022 20:37

You can highlight any poster on Premium?

CrymeaRvr · 31/01/2022 21:25

‘ Changing names mid-way through a thread and you wonder why people don't recognise you as the same poster? ‘

No, I don’t. I don’t care if they don’t recognise me - I mean it doesn’t happen very often as it’s just a byproduct of changing my name.

OP posts:
CrymeaRvr · 31/01/2022 21:27

‘ I think you're perfectly normal. Except for telling your friend anything to do with you and MN. None of my friends even know I use MN.’

I know loads of people Who reference it all the time! Not why they post usually but this one friend is a massive feminist so uses those boards to debate, influence, share her experiences etc

OP posts:
CrymeaRvr · 31/01/2022 21:32

‘ When you post you can enter one of your old names in the name box;

So why not return to the thread and engage in the debate instead of plopping?’

I didn’t know you could do that for starters! But like I said, I just happened to change my name that day. Then notice the other thread was still going.
Not deliberate not ‘popping’ or being a puppet or whatever that was. Just name changing as I do ever few weeks … because of Margaret from Accts…
Which, now I know is entirely normal here I feel better about!

You seem a bit unclear on how posts work on Mumsnet so I'll just explain; that thread is still going because its an ongoing, real life safeguarding situation in a school. Its not a hypothetical situation and your post didn't close the topic.
You've misunderstood how safeguarding works in that situation, its a legal requirement and its not optional; which is why you are getting responses to your post that aren't supportive of your position.
Thats not bashing you.
FWR has a reputation for plain talking, but generally its still not considered to be as feisty as AIBU. It can be a culture shock if you are used to forums where there are less diverse opinions.

CrymeaRvr · 01/02/2022 20:14

Wonder who the 14% are who think it is unreasonable to change user names??

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 01/02/2022 20:21

If you are going to overshare or give loads of opinions that people might not like it's probably best to namechange for each thread just in case. I don't think it's an unreasonable thing to do.
And as you have a 'friend' on here it's probably very wise.

CrymeaRvr · 01/02/2022 20:31

@Sparklingbrook that’s sounds a bit chaotic! My comments really aren’t that controversial or interesting!

I’ve just changed mine Wink

Chaotic? If your comments aren't controversial or interesting then why the namechanging for that?
Although as I said if you have a friend on here that's reason in itself.

Westerman · 01/02/2022 20:34

I've changed mine loads of times on here. Your friend needs to mind her own business.

bighugandkiss · 01/02/2022 22:00

I change mine regularly. But I do wonder if there was a data breach would that make any difference- wouldn't the username history be accessible as well?

MissAngorian · 01/02/2022 22:13

You've just prompted me to change mine - thanks OP!

MmeHennyPenny · 02/02/2022 11:14

HelloFrostyMorning

I agree with everything you said.

I am very grateful to you too as you saved me trying to formulate my thoughts on a morning when my brain hurts.😂

Thank you.

Furbulousnous · 02/02/2022 11:31

Enjoying the word ‘plopping’ even if it is just a weird MN term, and I’m not brave enough to Google it to see if it exists IRL either cos I can imagine that it can mean all sorts of stuff!!

whitebarn · 02/02/2022 12:13

you would have to register each time to break that link

nc is mainly for those of us who dont want mn users to see our past posts and put together a picture

IncompleteSenten · 02/02/2022 12:16

Why would you be?

I kept the same name for years. I left after the data leak but am too hooked to stay away 😂 now I NC every few months.

I do worry that eventually it will be impossible to think of a username that's free

As whitebarn said - deregistering and re-registering is the best way to circumnavigate this concern.
