Do you drink wine every evening or have a binge now and again? I have 1 glass every evening and maybe a few more over the weekend. I love my evening glass and don't feel the urge to keep going, something good on tv, or a hot bath and my glass and Im happy. Maybe its a bit of a routine now, i start looking forward to it from 7pm.

The other day i treated myself to a mini red bottle and had half a glass, put the rest in my bag as it was next to where i was working at home that evening, dh saw it in there and now thinks i have a problem. However, where i have a glass in the evening, he binges about twice a week, has so much he is wiped out the next day, so who is worse?

Anyway i am not ashamed to admit i love my wine and as a busy mum, i need that nightly glass.

Thoughts from fellow wine lovers ?(I'm sure someone will come on here and say I'm an alcoholic, this is MN)

I think it’s really good you’re looking at alcohol free days OP - if you can get it to 2-3/week that’d be much better. To add to my previous comment my uncle was an alcoholic (was because he’s dead now). He worked shifts and had 2 cans of lager every morning when coming off a night shift to wind down before bed. Drunk more on social occasions but not every week and never obviously drunk/lairy. He did this for years. this was in the days of weaker strength lager so 2 cans was 3 units ie the same as a large glass of wine. He had to have an operation and the hospital discovered he was an alcoholic and his liver was damaged beyond repair. With hindsight we all said of course he was an alcoholic but because he was a high functioning one no one really noticed at the time.
I think a lot of us on this thread have drunk or do drink too much at stages of our life, but don’t let it go on so long it becomes part of what you always do/how you define yourself.

I don't think you're an alcoholic but it isn't a very healthy thing to do.

I wonder what you'd think if I said I had chips every night or a Krispy Kreme doughnut every night?

Still, your life and my diet is worse than your wine drinking so I'm not judging, just wondering if you'd feel the same framed in a different way?

Can i add, my friend's sister is married to a wealthy man, drinking wine every evening with their meal is completely normal and she doesn't think twice about it, they travel the world and wine is part of the culture, not saying its right, but some lifestyles it is very normal.

Anyway just sipping my tea here and tbh , its lovely !

My Stepfather is wealthy and drinks wine every night - it doesn't make it healthier because it's more expensive wine Grin

I mean, it's not healthier to be a rich person eating Godiva chocolates every night than someone eating Dairy Milk...

I love wine! I would love to have a glass every evening to relax with. Unfortunately i stick to fri and sat. If im being honest more for the calories than because its bad dor you. Ive had long periods not drinking through having children and i never noticed feeling better for it!

Drink only at the weekend. A couple of glasses of red. I love wine but it isn't good for you. I live ever in hope that Synthehol will become a real thing.

Being dependent on alcohol, even one glass is not a good idea, advice is at least 2 alcohol free days a week. We slipped into bad habits over lockdown 1 (gin o'clock in time for the broadcast AND wine) we now only have alcohol on Friday/Saturday/Sunday unless out at something specific. I'm not claiming to be virtuous, I do exceed the 14 units some weeks, but it's better than daily drinking

latetothefisting · 31/01/2022 21:10

to be fair to you half a mini bottle is a very small glass of wine! I'm doing dry jan atm but when I usually have wine, it's maybe a glass or two at the weekends - but my glasses would be big ones! So maybe half to 2 thirds of a bottle, which I don't think classes as a binge?

If you're only drinking 175ml 5-6 times a night that adds up to one bottle a week, which is less than guidelines. Agree that maybe doing 2 wine free nights and having a cuppa/some form of nice tonic or other alcohol free fizz if you like it (I like a ginger beer!) instead might be good but other than that don't see the issue.
