If someone starts selling stuff on Facebook and has a page on there, starting to make lots of money in addition to their already well paid job, does it need to be registered?
Do they need to have a company registered or do anything with tax?
Dhs SIL is doing this and he thinks fraud of some kind.
I thought there was an amount you could earn before having to formally do anything in terms of tax or registration of anything.
He's really angry about it and on the verge of saying something or reporting, I think he's going to look really silly.
Can I just show him, who would report this and who would leave alone?

From HMRC point of view you can make £1,000 a year as a hobby trade without having to report it. But, I think that may be the turnover figure not just the profit.

avamiah · 30/01/2022 22:44

I would mind my own business buts that’s just me.

LondonQueen · 30/01/2022 22:45

You can make up to 1k a year, so unless she is doing some serious selling there is no need to register/do a tax return.

Frazzled50yrold · 30/01/2022 22:48

You need to make £1000 when you take out your costs. If they're purchasing whatever they sell and posting them there will be reasonable costs attached so they may not need to register.

valentiny · 30/01/2022 22:49

She's quite stuck up and always undermining him. Thats clearly the real issue

Like others have said it's £1k+ that requires self assessment. She wouldn't be told who reported her if investigated.
Bad times if you dislike your sibling so much you would report it though.

misssunshine4040 · 30/01/2022 22:55

Oh ok, maybe tell him this isn't the hill to die on as he will just look childish and surely his DB won't be impressed
DePfeffoff · 30/01/2022 23:06

How does he know she hasn't done everything she should? He'd look a right idiot if that's the case.

SeeminglyOblivious · 30/01/2022 23:09

Registering as a sole trader and therefore being all above board is ridiculously easy and she may well have already done it.

He's going to make himself look like a bitter old twit.

TabithaTittlemouse · 30/01/2022 23:09

I know it probably isn’t relevant but what is she selling to make ‘lots of money’?

I wouldn’t get involved.

DearlyBeloathed · 30/01/2022 23:09

He needs to get a life.

Christmissy · 30/01/2022 23:29

@DearlyBeloathed

He needs to get a life.
Was just about to type this.
ComtesseDeSpair · 30/01/2022 23:35

How on earth does he know what her business arrangements are and whether or not she’s paying tax?

But it wouldn’t be fraud even if she wasn’t paying tax and should, it would be tax evasion.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 30/01/2022 23:36

How does he know she hasn't registered? It barely takes five minutes Confused

ComtesseDeSpair · 30/01/2022 23:39

Is she really stuck up and undermining of him? Or does she really just not give him the respect he thinks he deserves, because she thinks he’s a bit of an idiot, as he’s demonstrating himself to be by being “really angry” over a situation he’s utterly clueless about?

OnaBegonia · 30/01/2022 23:50

Is he always petty and jealous?

Kuachui · 31/01/2022 00:14

hes being unreasonable here. she wont be making millions - _-

Whatinthelord · 31/01/2022 00:27

Sounds like an oddly unhealthy relationship. If he dislikes her why wouldn’t he just have low contact and stay out her business. Trying to report her sounds spiteful.

Its turnover that needs to be under 1k not profit
Rachie1973 · 31/01/2022 01:33

He sounds like a tit to be honest.

WorriedMutha · 31/01/2022 01:42

If she's selling her own stuff like having a wardrobe clear out or shifting kids clobber, this isn't trading and wouldn't be taxable.

Wowwe · 31/01/2022 09:37

I would actually be considering divorce if my DH was that much of a wrongen towards his own sister

BubblesThaDragoon · 31/01/2022 09:40

Turnover £1000 not profit as some posters have said

ElectraBlue · 31/01/2022 09:47

How do you know that anything wrong is being done?

People can easily register as sole traders and then they just need to fill in a tax return looking back on earnings for each financial tax year by 31st January each year.

Also if this is a new business, it could be that they will fill their first return in January 2022. Plus you have no idea of what profit they are making and what expenses they can claim against that.

Frankly as you don't have all the facts I would mind my own business if I were you...

It is a bit concerning as well that your partner would do this to a sibling, rather than just speak to them about it. Smacks of jealousy and bitterness.
