To think he did not deserve a jail sentence

meadowandpetals · 30/01/2022 18:39

I know this story is many years old but I recently came across it. AIBU to think a prison sentence was too harsh of a punishment for what he did? What he did was wrong and he should have been punished in some way in my opinion but I don’t think he should have jailed. However that is just my opinion. Would love to hear others take on this.

yes he should

and people still do in 2022!

Porcupineintherough · 30/01/2022 18:42

Well no, contempt of court is serious and I think he got off pretty lightly tbh. It's not ok to piss off halfway through a jury trial because you'd rather be doing something else.

GirlInACountrySong · 30/01/2022 18:44

i remember a woman going off to Malta and calling in sick from over there!! she was caught and sentenced ,again, contempt of court

bloody time wasters

PattyPan · 30/01/2022 18:44

Clearly he had no respect for the justice system so I’m not sure how else they were supposed to impress that upon him.

AuntyClem · 30/01/2022 18:44

He fully deserved the prison sentence. Contempt of court is a serious matter.

powershowerforanhour · 30/01/2022 18:48

Pour encourager les autres.

lonelyapple · 30/01/2022 18:52

Yes, ridiculous! People get away with no jail time for far more serious things.

Gizacluethen · 30/01/2022 18:55

It's actually a disgraceful thing to do. It was only two weeks but certainly showed him how serious it is to mess with people's lives like that. Absolutely top level selfishness .

PossiblyDreaming · 30/01/2022 18:55

Considering the man who admitted beating my sister unconscious in a completely random, unprovoked attack when he already had a history of violent crime, leaving her with a permanent limp and sight difficulties wasn’t handed a prison sentence, I’m astounded that guy was.

SmolCat · 30/01/2022 18:57

I was surprised by the jail time too. As pp said jail time for serious things doesn’t always happen.

But @meadowandpetalsimagine if you had had something seriously awful happen to you. And finally, after so much waiting, it was going to trial. You turn up in court and everything starts; it’s an extremely upsetting time for you having to relive the trauma and have every detail scrutinised by the opposing lawyers. It’s dragging on longer than you can manage already.

To have that process paused must be so difficult to cope with. And all because one of the jurors wants to go watch Chicago the musical...

Pazuzu · 30/01/2022 18:58

No sympathy whatsoever. The idiot lied to the court. You let that go once you open the floodgates.

Also, if you let no shows off, you would probably massively increase the likelihood of jury tampering.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/01/2022 19:00

IMO the stupid little twit fully deserved it. It was only 2 weeks after all. It’ll serve as a warning to anyone else.

When I did jury service there were very stern warnings about not trying to research the defendant or anything about the case, on the internet, nor discuss it with anyone else, since you have to go solely on the evidence and defence presented in court.,

There was a big notice in the jurors’ room about someone who’d ignored this, had researched the defendant, and been found out.
She got an 8 month prison sentence - and she was a university lecturer, who you might think would have had more sense.

But that notice was certainly enough to make anyone else think twice.

gabsdot45 · 30/01/2022 19:02

Very disrespctful to the court and the other jurors. My brother was on a jury last summer and it took over his entire summer. He had to cancel his holidays because of it. And the case ended up being thrown out in the end.

meadowandpetals · 30/01/2022 19:08

I understand what he did was a very serious matter but when you hear of people violently attacking others and not going to prison it makes you feel it’s not fair that those people did not locked up when I think they should have.

Yes it's not fair, but the unfairness lies in the others escaping justice, not that this person got punished
Halfabag · 30/01/2022 19:24

The others have got off way too lightly as is usual in the UK. I think what this guy got was right.

Coldilox · 30/01/2022 19:42

Funnily enough, judges don’t like it when people take the piss out of the court system.

Thirtytimesround · 30/01/2022 19:55

Yanbu. He is no threat to society. He should have got a big fine.

The law is applied too randomly. Offended judge? Prison time. But when Modestas Sidarkovas sexually assaulted a woman eight times, he gets a suspended sentence. Oh and his scooter got taken away.

So a disrespectful theatregoer is in prison and a serial sexual predator remains at large. Just great.

BigYellowHat · 30/01/2022 20:08

Of course he deserved it. What other punishment do you propose @meadowandpetals ??

Meandthesky · 30/01/2022 20:12

I think the far bigger problem is that people who commit far worse crimes don’t get prison time when they should, which makes this idiots sentence seem harsher than it would otherwise

drpet49 · 30/01/2022 20:13

Yes he deserved it.

StoneofDestiny · 30/01/2022 20:17

Correct

GirlInACountrySong · 30/01/2022 20:26

maybe some poor victim and their families were gearing themselves up for an upsetting court case.....having waited a long time for justice......knowing it would be upsetting and need to be re lived and played out in court

then its delayed....cos some idiot wanted to watch a crappy 'musical'

he got what he deserved....costs time and money, and employers need to juggle staff to accommodate employees going off for jury service

guardiansofthegalaxychocs · 30/01/2022 20:29

Disrespect a posh white man (judge), you’re going to jail, beat a woman- very likely you’ll never be arrested never mind sent to jail.

What a world…

BrioNotBiro · 30/01/2022 21:15

It takes a huge amount of work, effort, money to prepare and bring a case to court. In addition is the emotional stress of the victim and any other witnesses.

Then some entitled idiot like this thinks he can just bunk off and endanger all that preparation, because he fancies an afternoon at a musical. He definitely deserves what he got.
