To think he did not deserve a jail sentence

I know this story is many years old but I recently came across it. AIBU to think a prison sentence was too harsh of a punishment for what he did? What he did was wrong and he should have been punished in some way in my opinion but I don’t think he should have jailed. However that is just my opinion. Would love to hear others take on this.

@meadowandpetals

I understand what he did was a very serious matter but when you hear of people violently attacking others and not going to prison it makes you feel it’s not fair that those people did not locked up when I think they should have.
Yes, he probably could driven to court, with no license, in a car that he stole, over the limit. For the third time. And not got a prison sentence. But in this case he personal affronted a judge which is much worse than those other things.

He got 14 days. Yes it was fair.

I wonder how he's doing now, ten years later?

@sadpapercourtesan

I don't think he should be in prison, but I think we need a complete rethink of the way we use imprisonment. I would like to see custodial sentences used only for people who need to be segregated from the general public because they pose an ongoing risk to others.
I agree with this.

I think a 2 week prison sentence for this seems not only pointless, but ridiculous, because it only wastes even more of the tax payers money. I think a large fine or community sentence would have been much more appropriate.

I totally agree what he did was shitty and needed consequences, but there’s nothing to suggest that he poses any risk to others to justify being jailed and we know that time in custody is not even particularly effective at preventing future offending!

I agree with others that compared to other crimes where people manage to receive no jail time ( things like have CSA images) it just doesn’t make sense.

He got off lightly IMO.

Namenic · 31/01/2022 00:55

Disproportionate compared to violent and sexual crime.

Flutterflybutterby · 31/01/2022 03:19

I wouldn't do jury duty, and I think it's outrageous that they force unwilling people to.

malificent7 · 31/01/2022 04:22

Why do they not have jury back up ( like a reserve,) plus a big fine in event of this happening?

malificent7 · 31/01/2022 04:25

Slight derailment but why do the jury

( bunch of random with no legal experience) get to decide the fate of a defendant? Lack of bias?

Graphista · 31/01/2022 04:31

I'd rather prison spaces were reserved for violent offenders

BUT this is a serious matter, I'd have hit him with a HUGE fine and community service of a creative sentencing type - like having to sit in on jury selections for 6 months or depending on his skills/qualifications doing some court work

Very disrespctful to the court and the other jurors. My brother was on a jury last summer and it took over his entire summer. He had to cancel his holidays because of it. And the case ended up being thrown out in the end.
It's stories like that which remind everyone why anyone who can get out of jury service does get out of jury service.

There's no guarantee travel insurance would pay out for something like this, especially for the other members of the family meant to be going on holiday.

As a self employed person, the thought of being called up for jury service is the stuff of nightmares, especially when it could knock out an entire peak season and so destroy my income for a whole year.

Longdistance · 31/01/2022 05:30

He got off lightly with two weeks. Bloody idiot!

NewPapaGuinea · 31/01/2022 05:42

I did jury duty a few years ago. Turned up on Wednesday and was sent home as the judge was playing golf. Whether or not that was his prearranged day off we all had wasted our time travelling in. Some from 20 mile away 🤷‍♂️

Oh dear, when I was 19 I was selected for jury service. I was such an immature 19 year old, I remember crying to my dad that i didn't want to do it.

I was in one trial and it clashed with a gig I wanted to go to. I basically told the judge that I had a dentist appointment so I could leave an hour early. I thought I could slip out, and it would carry on without me and that is just catch up the next day. I mean what a twat I was !
The judge made me explain why I had arranged a dental appointment during court and luckily a fellow judge stood up for me about how hard it is to get dentist appointments for me as a student.
I was mortified when everyone had to leave early with me Blush

Honestly now with the benefit of maturity I know I was a complete idiot
