to hate Spring

crochetmonkey74 · 29/01/2022 23:20

Ok this is a really unpopular opinion but I have had it since I was a child.
I hate the first signs of Spring that everyone loves. It makes me feel unsettled and sort of anxious about having all the extra hours.
I have no idea where it comes from or why I feel like it. I thought it was just a fear of change- but it doesn't happen with the onset of Autumn and Winter- I love those seasons.
I don't hate the Summer or find it uncomfortable- I enjoy all the normal Summer stuff- I'm not lonely and I don't struggle to fill my time, but the weeks when the birds start waking me up in the morning and the nights draw out, those spring days just give me this hollow pit of the stomach feeling. No one in my real life can relate- at work the mantra is 'Spring is coming Thank God' - anyone here know what I mean, does anyone else have this?

@Luckyelephant1

Spring is my least favourite month but I can't explain why. I like the warmth of Summer, the cool crispness of Autumn and even the very cold but bright Winter days, but Spring is always a bit meh. It either just rains all the time or if its bright it tricks you into thinking it's warm when it's often still very cold but not in that nice Autumn/Winter way.
I really thought no one else thought like this.

I hate spring. It's a daily disappointment. You wake up, see the bright blue sky and think, what a lovely day. Then you go outside and freeze your tits off within the hour. I went on a walk today and my fingers were NUMB when I got back. I hadn't taken my gloves because I thought it would be bloody nice.

When this stops happening it's not spring, it's summer, the best season.

At least you know where you stand with winter (indoors). Spring is a gaslighting bastard and it can do one.

Upwiththisiwillnotput · 19/03/2022 18:39

This has just made me lol

I guess we're all different

I love Spring. Longer days, plants coming back, fresh starts, new beginnings after the bleakness of winter

romany4 · 19/03/2022 19:01

I know that feeling. I hate summer and all that comes with it. So from the end of February I have this awful tension building because I know spring is coming and more light and more warmth and it will lead to summer. It's too much for me. Too bright, warm and too much of other people

You are me. It's too bright already. I'm getting woken early already.
And every fucker was out cutting their grass today.

Riapia · 19/03/2022 19:02

My ideal would be the warmth of summer with just 8 hours of daylight.

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2022 19:03

I think all the seasons get an I hate thread so Spring is up

I like them all. Love spring though as blossom etc and longer light

OohRahhMaki123 · 19/03/2022 19:09

I love spring, early and late summer and autumn.

I can tolerate winter with enough festive-ness.

BUT I can't abide that middle part of summer in late June/early July. It just pisses me off. There's a shitty lull in the garden around midsummer and I can't help but think FFS- get on with it! As soon as the dahlias and heleniums bloom then I'm fine again.

MrsDThomas · 19/03/2022 19:25

For me its

Spring autumn winter summer

Spring means daffodils, lambs, lighter evenings, cuckoo.

Autumn is coal fire, smoke in the air, Christmas stuff in the shops

Winter is fires, red wine, port, snuggling with a blanket by the inglenook.

Summer is too many people about, tourists, when its hot im too sweaty, or its damp and miserable.
When its winter I expect it, but I really dont like summer

Adeleskirts · 19/03/2022 19:37

I find this really interesting. I’m the total opposite. I find the cold, wet, dark oppressive, I love sunshine, seeing everything start to bud and grow, pretty flowers appearing, and it reminds me I’m through the long dark cold winter and will soon have my windows open, summer clothes on, no need for heating, everything will be in full bloom, I can have dinner on the patio, sit out there in the morning for my coffee, and soon have my friends round, bbqs, long nights sitting outside chatting.

I can’t comprehend seeing the little flowers and blooms coming through, the sun shining and finding it depressing, it just shows how different we all are.

SucculentChalice · 19/03/2022 19:40

Spring is a manipulative friend I find. One day bright and sunny and quite warm, you feel you can trust it. The next day - snow!

Pixies74 · 19/03/2022 20:26

@Newbabynewhouse

Hmmm i think i know how you feel... sounds weird but it makes me think back to being a young child and having to sleep whilst its still light and feeling weird..do you relate? Or anything to do with being out drinking and getting home whilst birds tweeting? Urgh hate that Confused ..maybe its just that you like drawing thw curtains and shutting the world out and relaxing from 5pm but feel that you cant in the spring? Personally i find the summer worse...
I don't hate Spring (I hate the extremes so Spring and Autumn are my fave seasons), but those two memories you've pulled out instantly take me back and give me the creeps! But I associate those more with Summer - I definitely feel about Summer like the OP does about Spring.

I'd say this was my order too though maybe Summer is just slightly ahead of Winter and I do love summer rain, especially a good thunderstorm when it makes the air feel all fresh!

I used to get something similar and put it down to the years of approaching 'end of year' then GCSE and A Level exams. The smell of newly cut grass always evoked exams in me but it has faded over the years.

Abracadabra12345 · 19/03/2022 20:33

@iusedtobecool

I can relate 100%. I much prefer the autumn winter. For me the long days make me feel pressured to be outside all the time. I live close to the beach and I hate all the antisocial behaviour the sunny weather brings.

I don’t like all the noise / BBQ smoke from neighbours in their gardens ( unreasonable I know! )

I’m not a fan of uncomfortably warm weather. Basically I should probably move to Scandinavia and live in the wilds somewhere!

Spring does have its good points, new beginnings, milder weather, bulbs starting to flower in the garden etc. But I do love the shorter days of autumn and winter best.

Omg. You’re me. Apart from living by the beach
tomsellecksloverug · 19/03/2022 20:45

I hate spring and summer. They depress me like winter does to most other people. I love the dark nights and the dark mornings....people never understand that about me and that's ok. I could live in perpetual winter and love it.

Yep, this is me too!
Snowpaw · 19/03/2022 21:19

I used to dread the summer a bit where I used to live - I had a very small concrete yard where if I wanted to sit out in I was always quite near the bins, and the boy racers would race up my street on summer nights. If I wanted to “make the most of the weather” I had to go out. That kind of tarnished my view of the seasons. Have moved to a place with a well established garden now and I feel like I could weep with happiness at the new green growth coming through. A lot of my feelings about the seasons were tied to my previous living arrangements I think. I’m excited for what the seasons will show me in the garden now.

MrsDThomas · 19/03/2022 21:36

Oh yes @Pixies74 definitely a damn good thunderstorm!! When I was younger i was so scared of them, now i love a fabulous lightening storm

I realise that this is an old post but I googled 'I hate the spring' and this came up! I can totally relate to how you feel about the different seasons. I especially hate the spring when the clocks go forward at the end of March and suddenly there are all these long lighter evenings which aren't warm enough to sit out in but lack the cosiness of dark winter nights. It also annoys me when people post photos showing signs of Spring on social media! My grandmother used to complain that 'the spring is strong' when she felt a bit low during this time of year, so I must have inherited this from her. You are not alone.
