To say that sweet chilli sauce has no place in a chilli con carne?

(Lighthearted) Just that, really!
YABU, sweet chilli sauce gives it a lovely twist, or:
YANBU, actual chillies or chilli powder should be used as no sugar is necessary!

Uh … what? Who does this?! Name and shame them. There is no place for this behaviour in our society.

BIWI · 29/01/2022 20:15

I have no idea why so many people seem to want sweet stuff added to their food. It's like they've never progressed beyond childhood!

Chilli should have fresh chillies and chilli powder. You can add depth of flavour by adding some high cocoa content chocolate - but that's as far as any extra sweetness should go.

boatyardblues · 29/01/2022 20:17

I can’t flavour-visualise to vote because I’ve never gone that far off-piste. It does sound problematic. On the other hand, a lot of ready meals with a tomato base and bought sauces have added sugar so the innovator-cook in me thinks it might work.

FlamingoDust · 29/01/2022 20:18

Ewwww

pinksquash13 · 29/01/2022 20:22

I am that child-adult that likes all meals sweet but even I've not gone this far.

LoveFall · 29/01/2022 20:22

Yanbu. Sweet Chili Sauce definitely does not belong in chili con carne. It is wrong in so many ways.

Fuckitydoodah · 29/01/2022 20:22

Plain wrong

Crunchymum · 29/01/2022 20:41

Sounds gross, have you actually tasted it?

AncrenneWisse · 29/01/2022 20:43

No no no. That’s just gross.

Is there a man involved? LTB.

vesperlindor · 29/01/2022 20:54

Who came up with this abomination?!

mizzo · 29/01/2022 21:22

My SIL makes one which includes sweet chilli sauce and dairy milk chocolate. It is not good.

PrincessPaws · 29/01/2022 21:25

No! Fuck off

ShirleyPhallus · 29/01/2022 21:27

@mizzo

Grin I bet she’s all “everyone loves it and always asks what the secret ingredient is!!!” While they’re all fake enjoying it, like Rachel’s beef trifle from friends
tabulahrasa · 29/01/2022 21:27

Depends, I can imagine like a spoonful in a whole pot giving it just a tiny bit of flavour that’d mix in ok.

Too much so you could taste it by itself would be a no though.

ISmellBurnings · 29/01/2022 21:28

Yuk. No thanks.

I’m one of those that hates sweet food unless it’s in a pudding.

careerchangemaybe · 29/01/2022 21:29

No way. Disgusting. This is something my OH would do. Hmm

FawnFrenchieMum · 29/01/2022 21:30

I love all things sweet chilli, but even I don’t put it in chilli.

Creamcrackersandricecakes · 29/01/2022 21:32

It's an ingredient in Nigella's Quick Chilli recipe, (along with chorizo), and it is yum. I do have a sweet tooth though...

Ask Uncle Roger!

Too right! This needs to go on the MN list of reasons to LTB.

Notjustanymum · 29/01/2022 22:17

OK this is a dear friend, who wants to have a successful business. However, her recipe for chilli con carne includes sweet chilli sauce. I want her to realise that if she is advertising an event that involves a menu option of chilli con carne, then she needs to provide something that people expect, rather than bolognese with sweet chilli sauce and kidney beans…
How can i bring her into reality?

Even I wouldn't do this and I eat weird food combinations

bilbodog · 29/01/2022 22:30

Sweet chilli sauce is used in thai food not Mexican food!

SiobhanSharpe · 29/01/2022 23:00

So much bottled 'sweet chilli sauce' is horrible, not very hot and far, far too sweet.
Chile con carne should at most have a small square of dark chocolate in it but no other sweetening agent at all.
Some people might like it your friend's recipe because they're used to ready-meal type versions, many of which have added sugars, often high up in the list of ingredients too.
(And not just in chile con carne, added sugar is everywhere in ready meals, soups, jars of pasta sauces and stir-fry sachets. And it's especially prevalent in 'low-fat' versions. )

SiobhanSharpe · 29/01/2022 23:09

Perhaps take her to a restaurant like Wahaca? (Or similar -- google best Tex-Mex places near you?)
I know Wahaca is Mexican and C con C is, um, not.... but it might give her a taste of what flavours are appropriate.
