Have you ever seen a ghost/spirit?

Have you ever seen a ghost/spirit and if so, what’s your story? I’ll go first:

My grandad died when I was a toddler of a heart attack (I was in the same room when it happened). Fast forward to when I was about 6 I was staying at a family members house asleep in the bedroom and I wake up and he’s standing by the door and light switch. He turns the light on and stands there and I just go back to sleep. I was too small to reach the light and my family member confirmed she didn’t turn it on either!

I know your either in the camp of ghosts exist or you think we are all totally bonkers. 😂

I don’t know if it’s true, but I think only some people are able to see spirits. Please don’t think any of your loved ones didn’t love you enough to visit- I think we all get visits, but the vast majority of people can’t see them, some can just ‘feel’ it and many more are simply non the wiser.
My grandad was firmly in the ‘when you’re gone, you’re gone’ camp. So it was somewhat surprising when I saw him apparently dozing in a chair 6 years after he died at the bottom of my bed, in his striped pyjamas! He didn’t look solid, it was like he had a defined form made of white smoke. I sat there, 11 years old and quite bemused, rubbing my eyes and blinking, thinking that would dispel what must be some kind of optical illusion. But as grandad always made me feel safe, I just accepted it and laid down and went to sleep.
My dog died in October and I’ve seen her several times, sitting up on our bed, for about 30 seconds, before vanishing into nothingness. Quite perplexing but strangely lovely.
I’ve seen a little boy with blond curls as I was sitting having lunch in a busy cafe, I thought he was real until he turned and looked at me, I could see the chair behind him through him, and he promptly disappeared. Obviously no one else saw him but me!
I’ve only had one negative spirit experience that scared the shit out of me, but looking back it was more mischievous than ‘bad.’ Having a skeletal figure come right up to me nose to nose as a 9 year old, it didn’t have eyes, just black holes… Nah, that’s a nope from me. I think it was a rather unpleasant old man who used to live in the flat where we lived when I was 5. I try not to think about it!

Lived in a womens refuge which was a 3 storey house. Always felt something was in there, heard footsteps (could have been next door) always felt watched when I come in late.
Me and another one of the girls was watching a movie and to the right the curtain moved like someone punched it. We looked behind it, no windows open, no mice (not that they could do that)

I think my favourite story on here has to be the one last year or the year before about the woman who, as a child, was sat on the stairs home alone petting her cat and a man walked up the stairs right past her and she knew he was a ghost. That would shit me up so much Shock

I used to live in a hostel house share and woke up often times around 6amish to light knocking on my door. It sounded like a child. I would go to the spyhole - no one there. I'd open the door - also nobody there. I'd ask the house if anyone was up and tried knocking and nope, everyone was either fast asleep or away. The night staff that manned the hostel left before the knocking happened and there was a gap before the day staff came where no staff were at the house. I even asked staff to check CCTV as someone was knocking and waking me up and there was nobody there. On a couple of occasions I'd be chatting to someone in the hallway and they'd hear running/walking up the stairs next to us speaking.

When I was at my exes house I woke up to a man stood at the end of the bed with long hair and a check shirt watching me. I definitely wasn't half asleep as I've never experienced it before or since and the feeling seemed to wake me up from my sleep.

When I was at my nan's grave and my mum was tidying it up, I heard her call my name. I asked my mum if it was her calling me. She said no. The voice was loud and clear as day. The only other people around were two women and they were far away walking mumbling to each other in a low tone as they were that far away if that makes sense.

I went to a pub lunch and was 16 at the time (so no alcohol!) And as we were stood waiting to be seated infront of lots of my brother and SIL's family there was a set of benches. On one of the benches was a man and his dog, he had a newspaper and a pint on the bench and I swear to god he and the dog suddenly disappeared in a second and these two Edwardian women appeared in his place in those big round dresses with hats on and a cup and saucer with old fashioned newspapers and a cake stand on the table instead. They didn't acknowledge me or the 10+ other people I was with and were smiling and chatting and as soon as they appeared they went and the man was back with his dog. Shortly after we got allocated seats in another part of the pub for sitting to eat and the placemats were pictures of the outside of the pub in the early 1900's with women with the same types of dress that the two women I saw were wearing. I honestly saw this happen and rarely mention it as, frankly, I wouldn't believe it either if it were me reading someone else's experience of this. But it happened, and I've never hallucinated before or since. No lack of sleep or drug taking, it was a family meal.

When I lived with my dad as a child a lot happened in that house such as everyone being in bed and downstairs you'd hear cupboard doors opening and closing, creaking, foorsteps, just general noise like you'd hear during the day but at night when everyone is accounted for upstairs. I also saw two ghosts there and could go on about many other experiences but would be here all day.

Ilikeviognier · 30/01/2022 14:06

Not quite the same but ten years ago my dad died when I was abroad - it was quite sudden. The night he died I had a vivid dream that someone close to me had died and that I hadn’t found out until a long time afterwards. In the dream the person mentioned my cousins and uncles and how they were my family now. I woke up the next day and told my husband the story of the dream….

10 hours later I had a call from the police to tell me my father had died. He had died the previous night (when I had the dream) but it had taken them all day to reach me as I was thousands of miles away.

It might be a coincidence but I’ve never had such a dream before or since.

WickedWitchOfTheEast87 · 30/01/2022 14:37

I never used to believe in ghosts or mediums I thought they were a con. My best friend then asked me to come along to this medium sessions she went to and every week it was a different medium and all they asked was that we answer yes or no to what they tell us. I still wasn't convinced because what I was told wasn't true.

Just as we were about to leave the woman who ran it came up to me and said she has my nan here and started telling me things that I couldn't confirm as my nan died when I was 5 so I didn't know a lot about her. She told me the number 4 and August was significant, she then drew a detailed pattern on her hand and said my mum had that pattern on a picture frame in her house I was 😲 because there was no way she could have known that as the picture was on my mums bedside cabnit! When I told my mum everything the medium told me she looked freaked out and confirmed all of it and told me 4th August was my nan's birthday something even I didn't know! That convinced me it was 100% real. I lost my cat 2 years ago and two days after he died I came home from work one night and when I opened the front door I saw him come running towards me from the hallway (he always did this when I got in from work) I was freaked out never seen a ghost/spirit before and thought I was going mad until I went to bed and saw my quilt had been messed up a bit and on the spot where he slept had cat hairs on it and I had changed the sheets the day before!

Where I used to work there were two on call rooms for staff to sleep in in case the night shift staff needed extra help. One room was always freezing cold even in the summer. A few colleagues all said they felt someone tap them and breathing heavily on them. One night I was sleeping in there and I felt someone tap me on my back and breathing right in my ear but when I turned the light on no one was there. My colleagues also said whenever they went in there they had this bad feeling in their gut that something awful had happened in that room, it was an old house that had been converted but we didn't know any previous history about it but I believe my colleagues because they all looked shaken and freaked out after those incidents and refused to sleep there afterwards.

@Soul11Soul

Why would they hang around? Why do some people's parents or grandparents pop by to say hi and others don't. Did my dad not love me enough to come back? How much of our lives do they see/watch? It's all too confusing so Im saying nay.
Maybe because they need something or somebody needs them.

My DB died alone in his flat. He didn’t work and his friends thought that he was staying with me. In fact, he had just returned home after a long visit with me. We were not in the habit of ringing in between visits but I kept getting a feeling that I should call him. I rang several times over several days but he didn’t pick up - this was not unusual. However, the voice in my head wouldn’t go away so I eventually drove the several hours to his home and sadly found his body. When I saw his body a “voice” in my head said “It’s only my body, I’m not here”. CM5 I called 999 and when his body was taken away, the voice said, “I am at peace”. After that I felt he was no longer here. I now feel that people can leave behind some sort of energy/consciousness after they die

junglejane66 · 30/01/2022 15:18

I used to go to a pub that was said to be haunted. One night I saw a dark spirit, it was Jack Daniels

Nishkin · 30/01/2022 15:30

I shared a flat with two other students-after a night out one went to the loo- the two of us were so convinced she was coming back into the room we turned to tell her a joke we had just made- it wasn’t her but there was a really strong presence of someone walking in even though we could not see anyone. When she did come back she found us a bit hysterical and hanging onto each other.

A few days later we discovered that earlier that day the builders had found a bricked up room in the cellar with magazines from the Second World War.

OlympicProcrastinator · 30/01/2022 15:35

If anyone is interested, watch Surviving Death on Netflix. It is utterly compelling. It has footage and very believable testimony. Even my very sceptical DH was persuaded by a couple of them. The footage of the balloon travelling through the legs of bar stools in a haunted pub was incredible. Really good series.

They say that if you watch & listen they will contact you one way or another.
FrankGrillosWrist · 30/01/2022 15:50

I was staying at a house in Cornwall years ago on a family holiday. Although my room was lovely something didn’t feel quite right. Years later my mom said that she kept seeing people without heads standing by her bed.

HerRoyalHappiness · 30/01/2022 16:19

When I was a little girl my uncles partner died.
I remember going to bed and crying that night as I loved my aunt. That's when I heard her voice telling me I was her princess. She always called me princess. I was terrified and sat up looking around. That's when I saw a strange woman sat at the end of my bed. She had dark curly hair, wore a long dress and seemed to have a light emitting from her. I felt instantly calm. She said "shhhh Royal, it's OK, I'm here. You go to sleep"
And I did. I just led down and went to sleep.
The next morning I described what had happened to my mum who visibly paled and hunted out a photograph I'd never seen. The woman at the end of my bed was my grandmother. Who had died when my mum was only 8 years old.
Since then I've seen her twice.
Once when my DS1 was a baby. I woke to him crying. She was stood over his cot, smiling then she said "shhh" and I realised he had gone back to sleep.
Then again, 3 years ago. I'd had a TFMR of twins. When I would have been about 36 weeks pregnant had I not terminated, she appeared to me with two babies in her arms. One looked exactly like my DD and the other looked similar but more like DS1 had when he was born. Again she smiled and as I was crying she told me "shhhh. It's OK, they're safe"
I truly believe she's somewhere taking care of my twins for me because I never got the chance to.

WickedWitchOfTheEast87 · 30/01/2022 17:01

@Soul11Soul the medium I saw told me that they visit because they want to bring comfort to their loved ones. She said children most likely see spirits because they're innocence makes them more open minded to it than adults would be, she told me that adults who can see, hear or feel their presence are more open minded to it and notice the signs others would dismiss. She also told me they can be drawn to certain people i.e a grandchild they never got to meet or a loved one they were very close to.

@HerRoyalHappiness it sounds like your grandmother is sort of your guardian angel although I doubt I'd be as calm as you were I was freaked out when I saw my cat's spirit and thought I was going mad!

Leonthelobster · 30/01/2022 17:39

They say that if you watch & listen they will contact you one way or another.

How would that work though? Surely you’d just start attributing certain things to being signs. For example you could decide that every time you see a rainbow, find a feather, a 10p piece on the ground or hear a Robin calling it’s a sign from beyond that your late uncle is making contact ? It sounds a lovely way for people to find comfort though.

suckingonchillidogs · 30/01/2022 17:43

I don't like the thought of deceased relatives hanging around. I would hate my grandparents to hear my bad language when I'm working from home, I would never in a million years have sworn in front of them! Hopefully they're in a much more interesting place than my kitchen though

Absolutely45 · 30/01/2022 17:51

Yes, a few days after my fiancée died, i was carrying my daughter up the stairs to bed when she got excited and pointed to the top and shouted mamma mamma! i looked up and saw a human shape and i felt very calm.

She was barely 18months old so would have had no clue about her mums death, if had just been me, i guess it could be put down to trauma.

First and only time, i think she was there to tell us it would all be ok and it has been.

FAQs · 30/01/2022 22:24

@OlympicProcrastinator I probably shouldn’t have watched those close to bed time 😨

I’m pretty open minded to these things, however seen and heard the odd thing which have made me stop in my tracks and question what you think have been odd. It’s just weighing up if it’s real or something you want to see and therefore look for coincidences . Difficult one.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 30/01/2022 22:43

After DH died I had a visitation. I am so sceptical, and have always thought there was a rational explanation for experiences. But I was awake, reading a book in bed. I felt a sensation like someone kneeling on the bed, then it was like a weight was astride me, leaning towards my face. I felt the stubble on his cheeks against my face, smelt his aftershave, and heard him tell me everything would be OK. I was left with a sense of peace and tranquility.

avamiah · 30/01/2022 22:51

No I haven’t and my dad passed away 22 years ago and my husband 9 years ago and my beautiful mum passed away last August at 84 but I live in hope that she may consider making a appearance but nothing as of yet and she adored my daughter her only grandchild.

frecklemcspeckles · 31/01/2022 00:00

I'm not sure what I believe. Maybe some kind of energy makes sense to me. But here are my experiences.
My Grandad.. Ww2 navy veteran, not interested in any woo. When he was 15 I rural Ireland and his mother was in labour with youngest child he went was sent out to be away from the house. Walked a rural lane and in front of him a woman in white crossed form field on right across his path to field on left whilst looking at him. He politely raised his cap whilst thinking she looked familiar and as he turned back she was gone. He got home to discover his mother died at the exact moment he saw her cross the road. This was a big burly ww2 vet who was not overly religious.

frecklemcspeckles · 31/01/2022 00:02

Me. My mother was seriously ill. I drove along a road to our family grave to bring flowers but also to plead with the random spirits I didn't believe in to look after her. I screamed at her mum whilst driving. All the sections on the road after that for ahout half a mile failed as I got exactly to them.
