Wendy house has blown into nightmare neighbours car and cracked rear light.

We’ve actually very recently had to move because of these neighbours (my in laws/OH’s brother and his partner) and their harassment/threats however OH still owns the house.

Kids had a Wendy house, the house we’re renting doesn’t currently have a garden or anywhere to store it. Wendy house was in a corner between a wall which is at least 5 feet and OH’s house. We’ve had storms before and it’s never blown over the wall before, we did have a 10kg bag of play sand on the roof too.

We had BIL banging on our door this morning going absolutely mad because the Wendy house had blown over the wall and cracked his partner’s car’s rear light. Demanded payment there and then. Really quite scary when I was on my own with 4 children. Threatened to ring the police if he didn’t calm down and told him to go away and ring me about it later.

We’re wondering if it would be covered under OH’s house insurance or is it an act of god? They’ve reacted completely out of proportion to the issue. Despite everything they’ve done it doesn’t sit right with either myself or OH to not pay for the damage caused and I really don’t want any more aggro as I’m finding it quite triggering.

Posted here for traffic really but WWYD? Or what should we be doing?

It won't cost a lot. Your DH can tell his DB to send him the invoice.

That's it. Any more than that and someone is being ridiculous.

ThePlantsitter · 29/01/2022 13:02

People on mumsnet aren't going to be able to tell you what your insurance covers. Ring the insurance company and make a claim.

Yes, you should pay for it. Must be horrible falling out with neighbours who are family, but your wendy house damaged their car so you need to take responsibility. If you do it through insurance hopefully you can do that without actually having to talk to them.

Ffsmakeitstop · 29/01/2022 13:03

Tell the nasty twat to replace it and when he gives you the bill reimburse him.
Why are some people so horrible? There's really no need.

Cornettoninja · 29/01/2022 13:03

Urgh.

Ask them to get some quotes whilst you get onto your insurance/figure out your budget.

If they start getting wound up tell them to call the police if they want to and given them your number. I can’t imagine the police would do anything other than to (professionally) tell them to bugger off.

CraftyGin · 29/01/2022 13:03

I would just pay for it.

No point in claiming on insurance.

user1488481370 · 29/01/2022 13:03

We’d always pay for it but want to have to deal with them as little as possible in the process.

Are you the poster who lives on a farm who’s BIL has damaged your own DCs toys?

I’d be inclined to tell him to call the police. Sounds awful for you.

If you’re minded to pay then your insurance might cover or you could pay out of pocket but I think he actually needs to claim on his own insurance.

CrappyXmasMarket · 29/01/2022 13:06

How did a Wendy house with a 10kg bag of sand on the roof blow from the other side of a wall?

I'm not doubting your story.

I am doubting that DB is telling the truth here. I think he damaged it himself and came up with this as a way to threaten you and to make you pay for it

AncrenneWisse · 29/01/2022 13:07

I would not advise claiming for such a small expense as if it is covered it could put up your insurance for even more than the cost of the claim.

Your BIL is obviously unreasonable to be threatening and unpleasant, but if the Wendy house did blow over the wall and hit your neighbour’s car, then you are liable for the damage, so you will need to pay.

user1488481370 · 29/01/2022 13:07

@PegasusReturns yes. It’s infuriating as we’ve had our tyres slashed, kids toys damaged - numerous things and never really reacted but of course something accidental like this and were being held (in any other situation absolutely rightly so) accountable. But we’re not scumbags so we’ll pay what we have to one way or another.

Chickychoccyegg · 29/01/2022 13:08

Was the wendy house in their garden? If it was, it's not really your problem?

user1488481370 · 29/01/2022 13:10

@CrappyXmasMarket we have a camera in the house looking into our garden and have checked the footage, it did fly over the wall (don’t have footage of it hitting their car as it was out of the camera’s range) so I do believe him on this occasion.

OP posts:
CornishTiger · 29/01/2022 13:12

I’d be inclined to say prove it! And believe nothing!

Workinghardeveryday · 29/01/2022 13:12

You are covered under the Liability section of your home insurance, however the cost to repair the car would lightly fall with your excess amount on the policy or be just over. If you do claim it will increase your renewal premium.

Dishwashersaurous · 29/01/2022 13:14

Blimey a wooden playhouse blown over a fence. Must have been some storm.

Exchange insurance details, and tell them only to engage with insurance company

lljkk · 29/01/2022 13:14

What SamphiretheStickerist said is good. Take calm responsibility, ask to see proof of the expense which you fully own up you need to pay for, and you've done all you can.

My house insurance deductable would be more than the light cluster cost, I imagine.

BeenHereForAges · 29/01/2022 13:15

Im sorry OP it sounds like you've been through the mill with those people.
Txt him and tell him to claim on his car insurance, to pass them your details & you will not be engaging with him further.

Then enjoy your lives safe in the knowledge that you left those arse holes behind.

Get rid of the Wendy house or store it elsewhere.

Nah I wouldn't pay.
I'd say "I'll knock it off all the money you owe me for all the property of ours you deliberately damaged. And if you come near my house again I'll call the police."
You don't owe them anything, stop letting them treat you like this otherwise it'll never stop.

user1488481370 · 29/01/2022 13:16

Honestly could make this shit up! After everything they’ve done. If we don’t pay there will be huge repercussions from them.
Everything is blown out of all proportion as evidenced this morning. OH went to take pictures of the car just so that they can’t lie and say that it did more damage than it’s actually done and he’s just rung to say that he’s been threatened by his brother and calling our children and their toys a ‘fucking nuisance.’

Mummyoflittledragon · 29/01/2022 13:18

You should contact the police op. Do you have any footage of him damaging your car tyres or toys. The Wendy house was an unfortunate accident, unlike the damage he caused.

user1488481370 · 29/01/2022 13:25

We have some footage of dropping what we believe to be glass near our kids toys and photos of brightly coloured rat poison in our garden. We also have footage of his letting livestock out of sheds and of his dog attacking livestock. Unfortunately no footage of tyres being slashed.

Does he have evidence that a wndy house flimsy enough to fly over a fence is strong enough to smash a light?

Wooden?

Wendy House means a wooden playhouse I thought

As OP didn't state the material, and it's highly unlikely what amounts to a small wooden shed has blown away, I think it's probably safe to assume the OP has a plastic Little Tykes type affair rather than a hurricane hit her garden.
