Why TF is vegan beef jerky almost as expensive as gold?

Whatwhywhenwhere · 29/01/2022 08:54

£5 for under 200grams!?!?
I can think of class A drugs that are cheaper? (I don’t take them but still)
Is it made of pounded truffles grown in remote volcanos?
Aibu?

Because vegan beef jerky is not beef

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 29/01/2022 09:03

Because it's probably all manufactured in a lab somewhere which is much more expensive than if it came from a cow.

ShirleyPhallus · 29/01/2022 09:03

Along these lines, I’d like to know why alcohol free gin is the same price as the stuff with alcohol?! It’s like very very very expensive squash

Cleanbedlinen12 · 29/01/2022 09:10

Because they can get away with it - they will know their demographic has a certain income/ psychology and based prices on that. If it was cheap it would be possibly dismissed as inferior

Lockheart · 29/01/2022 09:15

Because "vegan beef" is an oxymoron and imaginary things are expensive. Like unicorn farts or hens teeth.

Notjustanymum · 29/01/2022 09:15

@ShirleyPhallus, that’s a more immediate point, given that the price of alcohol is mainly made up from duty on the alcohol!
What is vegan beef jerky made of, anyway? I’ve made Seitan, and that’s time-consuming… maybe it’s the process.
My DC who is vegan (for 9 years now) has tried all the meat substitutes and now sticks to only 3 kinds of vegan meat substitutes: sausage roll, vegan ham and quorn chicken nuggets, as all the others “taste horrible”…

I’ve wondered that. You would think there would be a “not being alcohol” discount.

Not to be a mn using a chicken for a month person, but I could feed a family on £5.

How can you have vegan beef? It's a contradiction in terms. It's probably taken forever to research and develop and made of all sorts of niche stuff which isn't cheap.

NoSquirrels · 29/01/2022 09:17

My DH mentioned that if I could find some of this in the supermarket he’d love me to pick it up for him.

I picked it up. Then I left it there. Fuck that for a snack item! He’s not mindlessly chomping on a fiver on my watch, eat a bloody apple, man!

JuneOsborne · 29/01/2022 09:19

Combination of intensive processing to create the product and vegan foods attracts a premium. It's trendy!

GaspingGekko · 29/01/2022 09:20

Supply and demand surely? Not gonna lie, vegan beef jerky Envy (not envy) sounds pretty niche.

I’ve found the same. My kids will eat Tesco’s own veggie/vegan food but won’t touch other more expensive “branded” products.

So is real beef jerky. It’s highly processed red meat Hmm

This made laugh Grin Too right!
RampantIvy · 29/01/2022 09:26

I would imagine that some of it is due to economies of scale in production for both the "beef" jerky and the alcohol free gin.

I'm desperate to try AF gin, but am not prepeared to fork out £14 for a bottle of something I might not like. The Gordon's AF tins of "gin" and tonic taste weird, and nothing like gin or tonic.

WhyYesYABU · 29/01/2022 09:27

You can have vegan beef just like you can have chocolate truffles, vegetarian sausages, polyester 'fleece' or oat milk. I don't know why everyone gets to upset over this stuff...you know what is meant!

JuneOsborne · 29/01/2022 09:31

Er, no @Suzi888, which is why it's an intensive process. Meat jerky is sliced and dried. Possibly cured. Vegan jerky isn't....or are you being deliberately disingenuous? Shock

Postdatedpandemic · 29/01/2022 09:31

You're not using the right shop

Yes, but you need to look at the scale in which it's being produced and purchased.

How many people are buying "vegan beef" for it to be profitable to a company? Very few, so the price needs to be high in order for them to make any profit.

Whereas many millions of people buy beef day in, day out, so they can buy it in bulk (which is always cheaper) and sell it for less.

Zazdar · 29/01/2022 10:55

Beef cut into thin strips, marinated, then dried.

I make it. It isn’t a complex or expensive process.

Suzi888 · 29/01/2022 11:59

@JuneOsborne and causes cancer and is full of salt. Grin

Suzi888 · 29/01/2022 12:00

Ahhh look at all you beef jerky meat eaters getting your knickers in a twist lol

TotalRhubarb · 29/01/2022 12:06

Because it’s a) highly processed. It’s not a real or whole food, is it? It’s been fabricated out of lots of things and this takes time and effort.

B) it’s a trendy bandwagon they can jump on and charge a premium price for

C) the marketing a new processed product or brand has to do to make shoppers brand aware and wanting to buy is huge and very expensive. They need to cover those costs.

Croissantly · 29/01/2022 12:07

Because research etc goes into developing it and its not produced in very large quantities- although of course there's extra £££s added as it's a niche product not many people offer, until they have recouped that research money and production ramps up it'll be pricey.
