Taking inspiration from another thread.. and to be honest a bit worried from reading it - has anyone got some advice on where to stay / where not to stay in Paris?

I'm already booked to go in the summer for a concert at the Stade de France.. so I've got to stay somewhere! It's a minefield looking at air bnb's and hotels.

What areas are to be avoided and what areas are nice to stay?

PS I know IABU for posting on this board but I'm after honest opinions and we all know this is the best place to get them...

O love Paris. My favourite area is behind mont martre. Little cobbled streets. Street artists. Nice rustic restaurants. Great views over Paris to eiffel Tower. Good luck OP

Ive been about 4 times to Paris. Last time I went to Paris, I stayed in the outskirts, and stayed in a place called Maissons Lafitte. It's really quiet and we stayed in a beautiful campsite ( mobile home). Before you say " God no", it's stunning and on the banks of the Seine. So beautiful with a glass of wine and so quiet after the bustle of Paris. Its got a train station and 20 mins gets you to the Arc du Triomphe.
If you want the bustle, I liked the Place d'Italie. It's not the absolute centre but a few Metro stops to the sites. Also more residential so nice restaurants where French people eat and not tourists. Had nice shops too and a shopping centre.
Also stayed near Montparnasse area too.
Personally, I wouldn't stay near major tourist bits. Hotel rooms are smaller, worse quality and restaurants overpriced rubbish.

I studied in the 7th arrondissment - that was a nice area. Some of the banlieu (suburbs) do have a reputation but so do some bits of London.

SnotRags · 28/01/2022 05:05

Another vote for Mont Marte

PsychoSyd · 28/01/2022 05:38

Do not stay anywhere around any of the mainline stations. Lots of beggars, aggressive homeless people & very high chance of being pickpocketed. I also wouldn't recommend anywhere around the Barbes-Rochechouart metro station.

The area around Buttes aux Caille in the 13th arrondisment is lovely, as is around the Parc Buttes Chaumont in the 19th.

Montmartre or the Latin Quarter or St Germain would be my suggestions.

GeodesicDome · 28/01/2022 06:03

7th arr.

Mercurial123 · 28/01/2022 06:14

We stay in this area

The fashionable Marais district in the 4th arrondissement, also known as SoMa (South Marais), is filled with hip boutiques, galleries, and gay bars. Once the city's Jewish quarter, the area still hosts numerous kosher restaurants. The grassy Place des Vosges is home to elegant arcades and the Musée Victor Hugo, where the writer lived. Streets around Saint-Paul metro lead to the Maison Européenne de la Photographie. ― Google

We had a fab stay at the le petit belloy st German Hotel which is in the Odeon area, near Latin Quarter. Room 62 on the top view has a balcony and to your left you can see the eiffel tower and to your right, notre dame. Not expensive either. Smile

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 28/01/2022 08:04

Definitely Montmartre! It's stunning and such a lovely place to stay.

merrymelodies · 28/01/2022 08:26

I lived in the 15th arrondissement for 9 years and loved it as it was safe and fairly central. Cheap too.

gobbledygoook · 28/01/2022 08:41

What's the budget? We adore Hôtel Plaza Athénée but it's really mega expensive. The San Régis is beautiful too.

SarahMused · 28/01/2022 08:53

Last time we went we stayed in the Marais. It’s lovely to walk around and easy for travel to the sights. Highly recommend.

Gigglebert · 28/01/2022 08:55

We stay in Marais, really lovely vibe!

ShinyNewStart · 28/01/2022 16:10

I always stay in the 6e, nearish Le Bon Marche. It's not Emily in Paris style, but it's one of the safest areas and people actually live there, unlike the 5e. That means the restaurants are better and cheaper and there are far fewer pockets.

Unfortunately the easiest way to check if an area is good is to pull up a map of covid infection rates...

amusedbush · 28/01/2022 16:15

I stayed in Montmartre the first couple of times, I've stayed near the Champs-Elysees (nice hotel but there's not much to do up there so once you're in, you're in for the night) and the last couple of times we've been in SoPi, or South Pigalle. It has a seedy reputation from years gone by but it's nice, clean, reasonably priced and feels safe.

rambleonplease · 28/01/2022 16:18

Montremarte, just lovely!

MsTSwift · 28/01/2022 16:19

We had a fantastic stay at airbnb in monmatre so French. Spent a day in that area got portraits done walked round the little streets sacre coeur just beautiful. Really don’t understand those slagging off paris.

Confrontayshunme · 28/01/2022 16:25

I loved the 10th arr. Near Canal St. Martin. It reminded me a lot of visiting my SIL in Clapham. Some rough parts but mostly nice shops, parks and easy to access lots of things via rail (Versailles or the south) for day trips. Plus it is walking distance to Du Pain et Des Idees, where I could eat three meals a day forever. Pastries so good you could weep make up for the preponderance of dog faeces.

couldn't we just have one thread without talking about fucking covid?!
trunktoes · 28/01/2022 16:32

My favourite place is the 1st art

beetr00 · 28/01/2022 16:36

What do you think?

15min walk to Stade
30min Metro into Paris

I love and have recently stayed in the 9th (I visit regularly and like Airbnbs)

An hotel I'd happily recommend is L'Hotel des Grand Hommes which looks out directly onto the Pantheon, and is close to the Sorbonne. Lovely area.
