Barbados. There was absolutely nothing wrong with it, the hotel was lovely, the people were lovely, the beach was lovely, but I just expected....more. Had no vibe for me at all.

thing47 · 28/01/2022 11:25

@CornishGem1975

Barbados. Nice weather, nice beaches but outside the hotel felt unsafe and I just didn't really get the hype.
The hype is for the beaches, what did you expect to find there? Confused
DaveGahansRealWife · 28/01/2022 11:27

@LondonWolf you do realise that everyone else (foreigners) who work there pays for all of that by the sheer number of taxes- sorry "fees". The Gov do this to keep the people onside as with many other countries around the world plus all the other extreme methods they deploy. Import labour? Oh you mean the slave labour? The wealth you refer to has created huge social problems for the natives - lazy youths whose number 1 cause of death is crashing themselves to death in their fancy cars, generations who don't know what it is to work.You obviously haven't lived there? Have you even visited?

pinkpillower · 28/01/2022 11:28

Cardiff. Nothing you can't find in other UK cities.

DaveGahansRealWife · 28/01/2022 11:29

@dorkfink

There benefits system is second to none, each citizen is given a large lump sum on marriage, their every need is subsidised. It's not perfect obviously. No where is.

Do you qualify for benefits if not a citizen?

No. You subside this by all the "fees" and inflated prices you pay.

@MissAmbrosia

Not that much to do in Rome
Roma non basta una vita!

For Rome, one life is not enough.

Rome has its negative points, like everywhere else, but a lack of things to do is not one of them!

saturdayhelicopter · 28/01/2022 11:29

@endlesssighing I think the overpriced thing depends on where you go. Pickpocketing / street crime is a huge problem, even for locals.

EvilPea · 28/01/2022 11:30

Legoland

Controversial I know

ThatstheSpirit · 28/01/2022 11:30

Hollywood - dirty, homeless people on every doorstep, good to say you've been but didn't stay for long.

throwawayafteruse · 28/01/2022 11:31

Lands End. Judging by the amount of people who were just using the car park to turn around, I wasn't alone.

MangosteenSoda · 28/01/2022 11:32

I expected to fall in love with Dubrovnik, but I found it underwhelming. It’s as beautiful as I expected, but it felt like a big bowl of tourists with no local vibe. I guess a lot of locals moved away during the civil war and normal life has been replaced by tourist stuff. Understandable, but underwhelming.

I don’t like: Bali, Cornwall and the Lake District although I would probably enjoy the latter two if they weren’t so crowded and gloomy.

I was underwhelmed by New York and Berlin but would return to both places and try again.

I don’t get the hate for Paris on here. It’s a big city and has nice parts and horrible parts. I enjoy the nice parts of it.

I’m also surprised that Venice is getting a bashing. It’s sooo pretty and imo easy to find a quiet spot.

You have literally just described the hype around Barbados…. What else is the hype about?!
flashy44 · 28/01/2022 11:35

@zeddybrek

Paris and Dubai. I just don't get Dubai.
Agree about Dubai,no pavements to walk on just wide 6 laned roads to drive oversized cars and all very over hyped
supertedious · 28/01/2022 11:36

Morocco- felt very unsafe followed out of restaurants, Riad was very unfriendly and ended up being pickpocketed. Could not wait to leave!

ivykaty44 · 28/01/2022 11:38

@JohnBetjeman

Slough
Where did you here Slough rated?
RaraRachael · 28/01/2022 11:38

Paris - hated it and the only place I haven't felt safe in.

Toanewstart22 · 28/01/2022 11:38

@pinkpillower

Cardiff. Nothing you can't find in other UK cities.
And much much nicer!
HeronLanyon · 28/01/2022 11:39

Yes lands end is a disgrace in many ways. Other than the small craft workshop just by the hillside farm. A few hours walk either way and it’s stunning but the ‘experience’ itself is something to be avoided. Although it seems busy so it’s working for some. I used to stay in the hotel there occasionally. The restaurant goes through lots of changes - has been ‘ok’ periodically over the last few decades (in fact it was ‘good’ for a period (90s?) but very unpredictable. Not sure what it’s like atm.

@veevee04

I'm pretty sad to hear Japan isn't good I really wanted to go for a long trip for my 30th birthday and see as much as I can next year !

I went to Florida just before the COVID pandemic loved Miami thought Key West was a load of overhyped, over expensive shit. I didn't like Orlando either thought it was a shit hole. I might try Tampa/ St Petes Clearwater next time or just drive and figure out where to go love having a hire car in the USA. Is New Orleans a shit hole ?

New Orleans is amazing!!

RTHJ14 · 28/01/2022 11:44

Mexico (Riviera Maya) and Sharm El Sheik, just couldn’t see the appeal of either.

That said I love NY, San Francisco, Paris and Rome - all down to to the individual and their experience!

merryhouse · 28/01/2022 11:44

People have been talking about the constant sexual harassment in places like Tunisia and Turkey ever since tourists started to go there.

Why do women still go there on holiday? It can't be a surprise. Do they genuinely think they're somehow special so it won't happen to them? Or are they so desperate for sunshine they think they'll put up with anything?

BestOfTimesBlurstOfTimes · 28/01/2022 11:44

Clearly I’m in a minority here, but I love Paris, Rome and Barcelona! I’m also surprised at people saying they didn’t like Stockholm or Bruges! People saying Marseille, I thought it was going to be awful, but then I got posted there on my year abroad while at Uni. Rough round the edges, but I love it.
I didn’t love L.A.
DH gets taken for a local around Southern Europe (dark hair, olive skin) so we never really get hassled too much.

Blossomtoes · 28/01/2022 11:44

@FangsForTheMemory

Gibraltar. Very polluted, hideous food, nothing to do.
Yup. Ditto Naples and Cairo - once you’ve been ripped off at the pyramids, that’s your lot.
